Status Of Pdaxrom-wiki?
« on: December 28, 2004, 01:45:43 pm »
Hello,

congratulations to rc8, another great release.

As with every new release, there are more users posting new tips and questions. It's good to have that knowledge available in the forum, but it's for sure not the best way to structure this kind of information.

A good solution for structuring that knowledge would be a wiki. I have read in the previous posts, that there is one planned for the pdaxrom-website, so what is the status of that?

I know that the current wiki at zug is closed because of vandalism, but modern wikis like mediawiki provide security features to keep your data save (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_feature_list), so an update of the wiki engine could solve that issue (needs only apache, php, mysql).

There are so many users contributing on this forum, so I think it's really necessary to have some kind of wiki. To avoid fragmentation, it should be on zug or pdaxrom, but if that's not possible in the short term I would also vote for an external solution.

Maybe you have already implemented a wiki, but if not please consider this opportunity. Personally, I would like to contribute both content and implementation, so if you have the webspace let's get it running :-)

With best regards,

Fabian

I would like to put up a tikiwiki on zaurus.spy.org --
but it's an older rdhat 7.2 box and if the box was ever cracked and
destroyed, there wouldn't be any backups, etc.

is it worth it for a gamble?  if so, if you know how to get tikiwiki
up and running on a redhat 7.2, please email me at scott@spy.org.

There will be a more detailed announcement on this topic shortly, but the quick answer is that both the ZUG wiki and FAQ have already been migrated to a new wiki (which uses mediawiki).  This will be more of an Open Embedded wiki than specifically for the ZUG (opens it up for all OE).

I know i have said this a million times - but patience please.

I will begin work on the new server (actually building the hardware) then i can setup the software platform. If ZUG will he hosting a wiki it will be great and could be used until we get things going on pdaXrom.org - hopefully we then can get the data ported then. But if the wiki is only for OE then we will have to setup up our own soon.

I know im lazy bastard but i have a fulltime job too (like 40-50 hours a week) and then i have to work on pdaXrom.

Hello,

I have just tested installation of mediawiki on my notebook and if you have lamp running it takes you only a few minutes for installation and for setting up permissions (with default theme) to give only certain users edit rights (it has a good documentation).

Tikiwiki seems more complicated since it comprises both cms and wiki, for real cms I would prefer Typo3 but I haven't tried tikiwiki so this is just my first impression.

I understand Offroadgeek's pre-announcement in a way that zug will be a subset of the oe wiki, so that could be fine.

Regards,

Fabian

Please keep in mind that the main principle of any public wiki is that ALL users should initally have rights to edit, even the anonymous ones. When you allow only certain people to post, you lose much more than you gain. For instance, almost ALL my edits in several wikis were anonymous, and in case it would have not been allowed, there would be no edits from my side, because I'm too lazy to register just to fix a couple of sentences. And so on. The main idea of wiki is that people generally mean good, not harm, so the less obstacles they get, the better.

It is easier to repair vandalized posts than to vandalize them, and if nobody cares about repairing, the wiki is of no interest to anybody anyway.

This new wiki will be open to all things OE.  We would love to have pdaxrom be a part of this.

IKM - you are 100% right!  And that is one of the main problems with our existing wiki.  Mediawiki is very powerful, and will provide the ability to allow the wiki to be open to all, even anonymous edits.

I would love to show you all a preview, but the new site is being moved to the new hosting provider (ibiblio.org!).  Hopefully it will be fully setup by this weekend.

For those who missed the announcement: the oesf wiki is here.

There is a begining of a pdaxrom section here

You are welcome to contribute, for instance a good thing would be to move the interesting tips from these forum, and create a more up to date FAQ from the one on pdarom etc..  there so that they are easier to find and looks more like proper documentation.

You can also suggest subject that you would like or would have like to find about pdaxrom.

Also don't think to much about classification, organisation now, this can come later when
(if) the number of pages grow.

The pdaXrom page and the FAQ page on the wiki could be invaluable resources, for pdaXrom users new and old, except that the dreaded bit rot has overrun these pages, and they are sadly out of date.

As a new user to whom much is unknown, I find the forum to be highly useful.  Unfortunately, some of the things I want to know about are in threads with dozens of posts -- which can be daunting and time consuming to read.  When this knowledge is distilled, it becomes more useful.  As such, I intend to distill knowledge into the wiki as I obtain it.  (However, if I do this all by myself, it is gonna take a long time!)

[I want to interject and say that editing the wiki is really easy.  You have to sign up, and ought to glance at how to edit a wikipedia-like wiki-page, and then you should be up and going in fifteen minutes.]

[I should also interject to say that I understand there are other useful pages, such as the pdaXrom FAQ, and the user contributed documentation.  I think we are best served if Laze and Sash can focus on development, and not have to worry about the FAQs/HOWTOs; I also like the idea of making it easy to allow the community to update documents.  That said, I'm happy to hear your opinions.]

Sir Isaac Newton said, "If I have been able to see further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants."  We all benefit from helping the community.  So, I am asking if you would consider helping out with the wiki.  Please stand up tall and help me vanquish bit rot and add light and knowledge to our realm in cyberspace.

Thank you,
Armagon
