Gentoo For Zaurus 0.1.1 available
« on: January 06, 2004, 07:31:20 pm »
Here is the first release of \"Gentoo For Zaurus\" (GPL, of course). It is a complete Gentoo environment for zaurus. I hope this will help making tons of packages for cacko X11 rom (and other roms) very easily.

http://www.opensistemas.com/Gentoo_for_Zau...urus.715.0.html

Howto\'s, screenshots, status, etc on the web page.

Expect many bugs as this needs much work to be as stable, easy to use and fast as gentoo.

It is not needed to modify your actual configuration or rom on the zaurus. The complete environment is mounted over nfs. So please, try it. It will not harm your current setup. We need testing and ideas.

Features of 0.1.1:
    * Gentoo environment: It can \"emerge sync\", \"emerge package\", \"emerge -B package\", etcat, ...
    * Native compiler: Includes a native gcc environment for ARM based on the one from Cacko\'s site.
    * Cross compiler with distcc: Includes the zgcc-3.3.1 cross compiler for the main PC with distcc configured so the main PC is who does the actual compiling.
    * Complete linux system: You can install the applictions compiled over the environment before installing over the real system. Includes X11 so you can test graphical applications on this environment instead of the real system
    * Native ipkg format: You can install ipkg packages on the gentoo environment.

Acknowledgements:
    * Cacko.biz, for his fantastic X11 Rom, over which this work is based.
    * The Emerde Project, who made an effort to migrate portage to another platforms
    * www.spy.org (absentia), who is hosting the project

I am uploading all the files now to spy.org. I\'ll update the homepage and this announcement when all is ready.

Congratulations!!!

I will definately try this the next time I flash the x.11 rom.

It\'s people like you and sash ( and the whole community) that make the zaurus the machine to have.

Has anyone considered emailing the gentoo team and saying \"look, we can do this on a PDA!\" We have got to sell the zaurus, sharp are not going to do it for us.

But hey, the zaurus actually sells itself, so we only need to make people aware that it exists.

Nice job Lekter. It\'s nice to see other projects besides ours taking off as well. I look forward to seeing some of your later stages of this project. Btw, where is the package for Freecraft for our ROM? i was hoping to get a  copy of that. .

hi lekter,

it\'s a very nice post, gentoo is the ideal distribution to port to zaurus. You can have me to help to improve the distribution.

I have the freecraft ipk, but it contains Warcraft tiles and sounds, so it is not distributable. I could compile a version without these tiles, but the game looses all his appealing.

New features:
 - I have a working script to transform gentoo packages (.tbz2) to ipkg packages (.ipk).

 - Included some new packages in the main tree

 - Some cleanup and reestructuration

I expect to release a new version of \"Gentoo For Zaurus\" this weekend.

Have fun.

I did the step-by-step guide. everything goes fine, except that every time I chroot, the Zaurus freezes.
I tried with both Cacko\'s ROM (X11 and Qtopia), same problem.
Should I go back to PocketPC or is there still some hope for me  ? : )

Freezes???? I cannot imagine a situation in which Gentoo For Zaurus affects the unit. It doesn\'t touch the rom you have installed.

Which model of zaurus have you got?

Did you use the \"path/to/gentoo/usr/local/bin/mount --bind\" as stated in the docs? The stripped down mount command that comes with the zaurus will not work.

I have the SL-5600.  Would this work on that.  I love my zaurus, but I hate the fact that sharp could care less about it.

Thanks,
Nick

It is not working on my Zaurus SD-5500. When I chroot, I get \"Illegal instruction\"
