C1000/3x00 General discussions / Replacing The Hard Drive In 3000
« on: December 13, 2004, 08:37:36 am »
I was getting very close to buying an 860, as although the 6000 has some compelling enhancements, the clamshell style would be best for me. The new 3000 has me even more intrigued...

the 3000 has the internal hdd, and it occurred to me to ask whether the interface to the HDD was is  a standard one, in which case could you take out the HDD and replace it with a flash card to reduce power and improve robustness, or even upgrade the drive when bigger ones become available.

General Discussion / Zaurus 6000 pulled out of USA
« on: October 19, 2004, 07:23:30 am »
http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/5438.html

a sad day for anyone outside Japan.

"Facing stiff competition and low sales, a Sharp representative has informed infoSync World that the company has decided to fully withdraw its Zaurus SL line of Linux-based handhelds from the US market and focus on its home market in Japan. The company will be selling through remaining SL-6000 handhelds already produced and will continue to offer support and service for existing products, but will not be producing or selling additional units or models in the United States. The Zaurus line will continue to be sold in Japan, where different models have been available and have sold much better than in other markets."

Deals and Great Z Buys / Ebay warning
« on: August 11, 2004, 05:07:01 pm »
I made a bid on some legitimate zaurii on ebay, and started getting spam, some via ebay, some more direct, of people offering knock-down prices on zaurii.

These people offer really great prices, but want money via moneygram, e.g. Western Union or some other unstoppable source.

Be warned, if you get offered a good deal, and are tempted, be careful to use an Escrow service, and one you know is legitimate - there are some fake escrow sites around used by these scammers to get your credit card or other details.

Off Topic forum / Sharp to make new Hiptop2 (sidekick2)
« on: August 05, 2004, 08:01:40 am »
It's quite interesting that Danger chose Sharp to make their new model. I wonder how much the Hiptop2 is based on the Z?

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/0...0&tid=1&tid=218

"After years of waiting, the second Hiptop (or Sidekick, depending on the carrier) has been unveiled to the public. After the terrible hardware reliability of the first version, the second one, manufactured by Sharp, looks a lot better, with longer battery life, built-in camera, more buttons, better radio, new software features and more. Also, according to T-Mobile, sync is going to finally be here real soon now. There are reviews at CNet, over at PCMag, and at MSNBC." We recently covered leaked Hiptop II photos."

Deals and Great Z Buys / Brando

Brando have a very good reputation for after-sales service and care, so I would probably buy an 860 off them unless someone persuaded me otherwise.

General Discussion / Repair Service
« on: July 29, 2004, 05:45:39 pm »
Hi,
[d'oh, I meant 760, wishful thinking]

does anyone know where, in England preferred, where I could get an 760 repaired?

Reported corrupted main rom, and reflashed which worked for a short while and then died again. It's reporting too many unrecoverable errors in the NAND flash - it's possible to get into the on-board diagnostics in NOR flash!

I've been offered a dead one cheap, but I need an estimate of how much to get it fixed. I've found the pictures of the 760 disassembled, and confirmed that it uses high-density surface mount devices for the flash.

I would be hoping that it's the device and not the circuit board.

I've not seen anyone selling one which works except for broken screen, otherwise I could make one good one from the two :-/

thanks for ideas,
Paul
