PocketPenguin / Form Factor - Handheld Pc, Or Zaurus-style?

im considering that for the laptop/umpc version, my current design looks like a cross between the sony umpc and the classic Z, folding screen (except instead of a twist it slides and folds) in a thinner sony umpc format.

Sounds like a very interesting concept.

Really hoping something comes of the Pocket Penguin project.  I have gone back to using my Axim Pocket PC quite a bit lately, but the many compromises caused by the form factor and lack of "workspace" (because of Windows Mobile giving me a virtual qvga workspace even though the axim has a vga screen) is driving me nuts!

Sorry if this one has already been posted on, but for me this UMPC would be just about the perfect form factor.

OMG - do I want one of those or what!

Form factor seems almost exactly what I want.

The description of something about PSP format with a detachable keyboard sounds pretty much exaclty what I would like to see for pretty much the same reasons as craigtyson[/i].

I really want something that I can use as a pda on the bus or train and as a secondary (mini) desktop when I am sitting at my desk at work or home.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fluxbox: The Ultimate Configuration

Just cannot get this thing to work on my C1000 - I have the background showing and the Torsmo window, but no menus!

I copied the .xinitrc file and all the other stuff in the how-to but no go.

Maybe I will start with a fresh install of pdaXrom......

Any chance of a screenshot?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 Screen - Visibility Outside
« on: October 13, 2006, 03:26:26 am »
Welll I went ahead an got myself a C1000 and do you know what - the screen visability issue turned out to be a complete non-issue.

The screen on the C1000 is excellent.  Indoors I have not seen anything like it and even out in the sun it is no worse than any of the screens I have had on Pocket PCs.  If I use maxim brightness (which because of the excellent battery life I am able to use most of the time) then I can see the screen in most situations and those that it cannot cope with, well neither would the screen on my Axim x50v.

Can I buy screen protectors that will work for the C1000, at stores like BestBuy and Staples etc?

Got a free one, and its already horrible, and have removed it.

I don't know what they sell at the stores you mention (not being in the US!), but if you can find any screen protectors to fit the Dell Axim X50v/x51v - they will work perfectly as they have the same size screen.  Make sure they are for the x50v/51v though not just the plain x50/x51 which have a smaller (3.5inch diag v 3.7inc diag) screen.

HTH

BTW - I just realised that the DS lite stylus is the same size as the one from my C1000.  At last a cheap source for a replacment metal stylus!

gee, I wish I had known that before I spend a small fortune on all these

Nice to be able to find something that I can contribute!

As I have both an Axim x50v and my C1000 I am in the lucky situation of being able to use the same protectors for each device (I use the Boxwave re-usable ones).

I'd like to know how to use the Z as a card reader.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143279\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

As far as I know this only works with the Cxx00 series which have USB host built in.

Of course I may be wrong....

You have to be carefull of swap when you use the Z as a usb reader.

Please explain....

I use my Z as a card reader quite a bit at work and would like to know more about this.

I went back to the stable beta3. For me this is the most serious problem: There is no working NAND-backup function with this version (with all uboot versions?? I don't know). You can Nand backup but the NAND restore fails.   So any major problem you run into during tuning the system leads to startup from the beginning or at least to very time consuming step by step backups and new installs.
I really hope the following versions will allow NAND backups again.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143060\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Maybe someone can come up with some backup and restore scripts to back up config files, etc so you don't have to start over quite so much? shouldn't be too hard to adapt something from another Linux distro perhaps?

I have pretty much got Beta3 running how I want it, but I just cannot stop the itch of wanting to try out 1.1.0r121.

The two main things stopping me are what seems to be a very complicated install process compared with the older betas and the lack of working NAND backup.

I am wondering if there are any screenshots of the new release or any list of the features as compared to beta3?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Freeciv Questions
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:46:56 am »
Anunakin - I have now spent a couple of hours myself playing the beta release and can confirm that it is running fine without any crashes using a 96MB swap file on my SD Card.

The graphics really are pretty amazing and once the game is loaded it is no slower than the 1.14 version.

All I can say is "great work" and thanks for the help getting it going!

Okay - looks like it is time to increase the size of my swap file and see how things go!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142937\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Success - well sort of.....

I have increased my swapfile to 96MB and am now able to run Freeciv, although it takes a very very very long time to start up!

The graphics and sounds in the new version are excellent - way better than in 1.14.2.

The only problem I am having now (apart from the time it takes to start a game) is keymapping within the game.  I can move diagonally with the cursor pad but can not work out how to move in a straight line.  In the older version keys 1,3,7 and 9 were mapped to move in straight lines, but I cannot work out how to do it in this version.

Any ideas?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Lots Of Keymapping Questions

So the question is where is the Calendar key being mapped to Ctrl? Now for the weirder thing, I start mrxvt and open a bunch of tabs, now if I press Calender+d quickly then I just get 'd' displayed in the terminal, but if I press and hold Calendar down for a couple of secs then also press d, I get the equivalent of Ctrl+d which of course closes one of my tabs.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140368\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

This is exactly the question I have been trying to work out.  How can I make the Calender, Address, Home, etc keys available to be allocated as shortcuts keys.  I have been able to allocate the menu key in xfce4's keyboard shortcut setup, but these other keys are not available as they seem to be wired up to Alt and Control.  Anybody know where I can change this?
