C1000/3x00 General discussions / Need A Drive Image Of A C3000
« on: September 27, 2008, 09:24:27 pm »
Hello. I have a damaged Zaurus. It will not enter any pre boot menu. Trust me on this one. It is totally impossible to use any key combo, prayer or mantra to get this sick f*cker to heal.

I have removed the 4g cf hard drive and put it in a OpenBSD laptop with the hopes
I can maybe use dd or something to get the hd in a cool state where I can boot without using
any pre boot menu.
I really really need this Z.
(My crappy job does not allow laptops, and I can feel my brain atrophy from lack of OpenBSD at my fingertips. without this Z
my day to day life at work bites serious, hardcore BORING ass.

Do you think, if I can get someone to dd their working hd I could dd it onto the disk, boot and be on my merry merry way?
I'm really reaching here.

Here is some info from the OpenBSD laptop with the zaurus hd inserted:

Hardware Mods / C3000 Dis/reassembly

Thanks Tux.
What I did, is pull out the copper foil from the body rather than desolder it from the board.

I needed to take apart and remove the board from a Zaurus C3000 to solder something. There is  a copper foil piece .003 inch thick and about 1/4 inch wide  soldered to the board and somehow attached to the body next to the three wire battery terminals.
This I just pulled from the body and it slid out, allowing me to remove the board, flip it and solder the stuff I needed to.
Now, idiot me doesn't know how to replace this foil to the body. And lacking a schematic, or pictures that show the foil piece attached I'm kinda screwed.
Anyone either know what I'm talking about, or maybe know of pics or schematics I can use to un-screw up this operation?
Thanks.

I'd give you a copy of the service manual, but I was asked not to distribute it. Sorry.

Doesn't mean I can't point stuff out on a picture  I've left the usb port in for orientation purposes.

I've marked two of the JTAG testpoints; but I can't see from the photo I used where the testpoints are for the other two. So the diagram points to the appropriate IC pads instead. As far as the other components go, there's missing pullup/pulldown resistors for TCK, which I've marked as they're probably important; and missing caps to ground for TDI, TMS and TCK which I haven't marked as they're probably less important (I don't know the values either.)

Edit: uhoh - on the schematic the jtag wires are also crossed out at the cpu end. I hope they're still connected...

Sweet
Thank you pelrun

Actual physical or electrical damage is really the only way to brick the Z; since you weren't the one who broke it then what happened is anybody's guess - a fall, water ingress, voltage spike etc.

If the seller represented it as a working unit then you should be able to claim back your money...

(oh, and as for last resorts, you *can* jtag the Z, but it requires opening the unit up and soldering to the signals directly - the missing components just remove the ability to use the connector to do it non-invasively.)

Too late for a claim.
Going to get out the iron and make some solder smoke.  I've already gathered quite a few useful documents to help. But none yet that detail what needs to be connected. I'm now using a Simpad SL4 I bought to ease the pain
But I'm fixing the Zaurus.

How did you manage to brick it? A bad flash is *not* sufficient; the fn-D-M key combo will still get you into the diagnostic menu (it's stored in ROM.)

In any case, the jtag support is incomplete - it's in the schematic but the necessary components are not present on the actual units.

Everyone tells me the diag menu is in read only memory. But I guess you can screw up the ability to access it. Because I have thoroughly exhausted every conceivable and documented procedure to access said menu(s).

Leave it to me to be the only freekin' schmuck who actually somehow bricked his Zaurus. Well, I didn't do it but the lame eBay guy who sold it to me did. The menus were never functioning.

Anyone know of a good repair service?

Does anyone here have experience using a Jtag cable for fixing a bricked Zaurus?
I am interested in knowing where to get the 18 pin connector to make a jtag cable.

perhaps you should try to flash another distro, angtrom or pdaxii13 for example
then go back to openbsd later    (or try debian on your c3000 !!!!
Wish I could. I'd run anything if I could. Debian, or really any linux distro, is cool. But I prefer stable to an extreme aka OpenBSD.

I have botched an upgrade to OpenBSD 4.2.
As it happens, I need to use my service menu to fix things.

I noticed when I bought this c3000 off of eBay that if I did not hold down D+B on powering up that this menu appears. It is totally unresponsive at this 1-4 menu in Japanese. I mean, no key works. I cannot select 1 2 3 or 4. I assume this is not normal as I read that at this menu you must select a number. But at that point I cannot do anything but reboot by taking out the battery and unplugging then replugging. Has anyone experienced this? All replys are welcome. I am bricked :-(
I miss my Zaurus a lot. Please help.

i don't know if the key works but the touchscreen should. did you try ?

Yes I did. Thanks.

try repeating number 1 but don't press the fn button. just pull out the battery, press&hold D+M, wait for a few seconds and then reinsert the battery, the menu should come right up. i think that FN + D + M combination is only needed if you have uboot installed.

Did as you describe. No joy. Thanks for your help! I'm going to keep trying. I've been googling. Nothing is working so far. I am wondering if I buy a new microdrive if that would help. Still reading.

I just checked. For me the diagnose menus appear after:

1. Remove power adapter
2. Remove battery and leave cover open
3. Press FN + D + M and keep it pressed while doing step 4
4. Attach power adapter cable
When I do this to access the service menu, I do the same exactly as quoted above, but I need to keep holding (FN + D + M) for about 1-2 additional seconds after I plug in my AC adapter. Then the screen lights up.
This is the same for both of my Zaurii, SL-C3100 and SL-C3200

EDIT
After reading Dromede's post (below this one) I forgot to mention that (FN + D + M) is not always necessary.
It is my understanding from reading forum posts that (D + M) should work on most Zaurii.
U-Boot replaces this area of flash (erases the (D + M) access menu).
On the other hand, (FN + D + M) is permanent and is Read Only, and cannot be erased.
(FN + D + M) menu has BLACK lettering.
(D + M) menu has RED lettering.

Did exactly as you said. I get nothing. If the menu cannot be erased then perhaps there is something wrong with my keyboard. But, when I still can use my keyboard when openbsd trys to boot. All keys work.

Thanks Cortez. Looks like mine won't access the menu. Strange. I'm not giving up. When I get the time I'm going to get mid evil on this thing.Maybe I can, I don't know. One day I'm coding happily on my Zaurus, the next its gone. Poof.

I am trying to do the fn+d+m method.

Here is what I did.
Try #1
1) flipped battery switch to unlocked position
2) removed battery cover and battery
3)unplugged Unit
4) held down fn+d+m
5) plugged unit back in
Results: Nothing happened

Try #2
same as try number one, except that I tried pressing the power button after step 5
Results: Nothing happened

Try #3
1) flipped battery switch to unlocked position
2)  removed battery cover and battery
3a)unplugged Unit
3b)flipped battery cover switch back to locked position
4) held down fn+d+m
5) plugged unit back in
Results: after plugging unit back in the yellow charger led was blinking. Otherwise nothing happened

Try #4
same as try #3, except that I tried pressing the power button after step 5

Try #5
1) flipped battery switch to unlocked position
2)  removed battery cover and battery
3a)unplugged Unit
4a) held down fn+d+m
4b)replaced battery, cover and switch to locked position
5) plugged unit back in
Results: after plugging unit back in the yellow charger led was on steady. I waited while holding fn+d+m,nothing happened. So,while still holding the keys I pressed the power button.
The screen came on for the first time since trying this method. I waited still holding the keys. After the sharp splash screen, and a visible blinking cursor at the bottom of the screen, The screen went to black color and resd:

probing cn0 com0 com1 com2

boot>
booting hd0a:/bsd: open hd0a:/bsd: can't read disk label

turning timeout off.

Am I missing something? Did I perform this operation correctly?
