SIMpad forum / Any News?
« on: May 03, 2009, 04:52:29 am »
Interesting, there was something going on: Did anybody here play around with the Online Image Builder for the Angstrom Distribution?

I just took a look, not quite sure what to select for inclusion, and the resulting image file is just a .tar.bz2 archive containing the filesystem, so no clue how to get that one onto a SIMpad.

Looks like the SIMpad development is dying or has already died! I am still using a rather old image with the minimo browser, have to live with the fact, that it crashes all the time if a webpage has too much content, no flash, and no, VNC is not an option...

Did nothing else happen since last year?

I really just want a simple image with just a working webbrowser and flash support, it does not have to contain anything else (no PIM or such). Is it really that hard to accomplish? And no, I can not roll my own, I am just a user.

The opie image works fine except of the brightness control and the two extra buttons (joypad works).
Is the brightness control still not working?

Is it just the panel applet, or can the display not be dimmed at all?

Just wanted to try out the Opie image, but I need to be able to dim the display.

BTW No progess since August? I mean, not even new testing/autobuilt images any more?

I just read, that Mozilla's mobile browser is now available as first alpha release. Have a look here.

Will we see this one on Angstrom?

The 2007 version?

Any idea, what's the issue with the recent 2008 ones?

Nice! Any difference to VNC usage on GPE (speedwise)?

After my unsuccessful tries of X-forwarding through SSH I gave up on that idea, since it was too slow, and I didn't find the time to do more examinations of X-forwarding without SSH and VNC (just using minimo again for now), but maybe I'll try on OPIE again, since you now even have managed to create a konqueror embedded ipk.

Cool! Is this the latest version of konqueror? Everything working compared to minimo?

SIMpad forum / X-forwarding Unbearably Slow

Sorry, for not being clear enough, but of course I did replace "simpadip" with the actual IP address, and nevertheless it is resulting in exactly that error messages as shown.

Code: [Select]
$ DISPLAY=simpadip:0 firefox
No protocol specified
Error: cannot open display: simpadip:0
That's all I get, when trying SSHed into the Ubuntu-box. I do not really have any experience, when it comes down to X-Forwarding, so what could be the issue with this approach?

P.S. If the solution with X-Forwarding over SSH really is too demanding, why is it not mentioned in the HowTo on opensimpad.org under "Possible problems"? Since others seem to have it working properly, I am not convinced, that the problem I'm experiencing are a general issue.

You mean, I should log into the Ubuntu-box from the SIMpad over SSH, but without the "-X" option, and then do "DISPLAY=simpadip:0 firefox"?

SIMpad forum / Simpad Replacement Battery?
« on: September 10, 2008, 05:00:55 am »
I finally did the battery repair mod, using 4 x CGP345010 (which have now been laying around for some time). It was quite a hassle to disassemble the old battery pack and do the soldering on the new batteries, especially since for some reason the small inline-fuse (which I wanted to reuse) seems to have been blown. So after some more fiddling around, and removing that fuse, it finally is working again. Hopefully it is no problem to go without that fuse.

SIMpad forum / X-forwarding Unbearably Slow

I finally came around to test X-Forwarding on the SIMpad, as described here.

It kind of works, but it is unbearably slow. Connecting to an Ubuntu Hardy box with Firefox 3.0.1, this is what I get in the terminal:
Code: [Select]
$ssh user@ubuntubox -X firefox

(firefox:7819): Gdk-WARNING **: Connection to display localhost:10.0 appears to be untrusted. Pointer and keyboard grabs and inter-client communication may not work as expected.

(firefox:7819): Gdk-WARNING **: Coercing GDK_INPUT_ONLY toplevel window to GDK_INPUT_OUTPUT to work around bug in Xorg server

(firefox:7819): Gdk-WARNING **: Coercing GDK_INPUT_ONLY toplevel window to GDK_INPUT_OUTPUT to work around bug in Xorg server

(firefox:7819): Gdk-WARNING **: Coercing GDK_INPUT_ONLY toplevel window to GDK_INPUT_OUTPUT to work around bug in Xorg server
Firefox then starts, but it takes ages till the window display is completed, and then trying to use firefox on the SIMpad is that unbearably slow, that it can not be used seriously.

What can be the reason for that behaviour?
Does anybody have it working properly?
What about the shown two error messages?
Is it possible, that the SIMpad is not powerful enough, to handle such X-Forwarding over SSH on a WPA secured wireless connection?
Or is it possible, that this is some kind of networking problem (like OpenSSH trying to resolve the hostname or FQDN / DNS problem)?

Well, then we'll have to wait for Firefox Mobile (if it will be possible to squeeze it in for the Angstrom image). Strangely I could not find any useful info on Firefox Mobile.

OPIE only makes sense, if a recent version of konqueror-embedded is available. Is it?

We are still stuck with minimo_0.02+cvs20070626-r0_arm-oabi.ipk on the SIMpad, whereas development went on, and I've just seen an update to the latest version 1.8.1.16 for OpenBSD.
