General Discussion / Where To (re)start
« on: December 27, 2005, 11:27:23 am »
Hey Si,

Thanks for the reply. I was unclear, I was talking about the URLs for the OpenZaurus feeds being redirected from openzaurus.org to ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl, not something happening locally. I did in fact install opie-mediaplayer2 from that feed, and no codecs came down automatically. In fact, I can't even locate them in that feed. This is what I was getting at. I can't tell if something is wrong on my end, or if this is an incomplete mirror. It's all very confusing and frustrating. It makes me wish I had taken care of this a few months ago when I could have just gotten it all from the openzaurus site or the opie site and been done with it.

Is there another better feed to use for this opie stuff that I can be sure has everything in it?

I've had my 5600 for almost two years now. I was really excited to get it originally, and slowly burned out on things not working quite right in the original Sharp ROMs. At some point, I set it aside and it just sat for a long time.

I'm trying to get restarted on using it. There are two main uses I have for it. I want to read ebooks and I want to watch video (mainly Rocketboom and similar things.) I have flashed it to OpenZaurus 3.5.3 and tried to install the mediaplayer2 but it seems to come in with no codecs and I can't find them. There's all this mess with feeds being redirected and nothing seems quite right. It's tough to know if you are doing the right thing when you can't even tell if the feeds you are using are complete or not, temporary or permanent or whatever.

I have no data I care about, and can reflash at will. Given my goals, should I start over with a new ROM? I want to get this to work and get some use out of my Z but I don't have lots of time to futz with this. I need something that will work without requiring days of fiddling. Is there a ROM for which I can get a good videoplayer and the necessary codecs without requiring a big scavenger hunt? I like that there is an active community of stuff happening for the Z, but there is now so much stuff spread across so many sites that I'm having trouble finding a good single point for anything.

Thanks for any pointers anyone can give me.

WI / IL / WI / IL ZUG Meeting

Hey guys, it was good to see all of you. I would definitely like to do it again. I liked hearing about Derek\'s dual boot system, which I had never run across until I heard him talking about it. Lots of cool stuff to think about. My brain was full by the time we left, but in a good way.

Well, I have a particular Todai jones (I can only eat there when I get to the west coast or to Schaumburg, which happen with about equal frequency) but that needn\'t bog down the discussion here. I\'ll probably go there for lunch before the meeting then.

I\'m pretty new to the platform, so I\'ll have lots of things I want to learn from y\'all! I\'ve never flashed my ROM yet, so I might do that Sunday. I like that having free WiFi we should be able to download packages and images and generally go crazy. Should be fun.

See you all there!

I\'ll be there too. I just got my SL-5600 last month and am a relative novice to the platform. Also, if I have to haul out to Schaumburg from Evanston, I\'ll for sure be eating at the Todai sushi buffet  at Woodfield Mall while I am out there. Anyone else interested in that afterwards?

Mac Issues / Better MacZSync?
« on: March 16, 2004, 03:20:16 pm »
I would be willing to work on this project. I just got an SL-5600 a few weeks ago and not being able to sync up with the Mac is my largest bummer. It seems like overall it should be simpler than writing a conduit for the Palm since so much of what is happening is so standard and straightforward.

I\'m willing to sign on board to help out with the syncing project, starting with the address books and moving forward.
