Debian / Debian On C3xxx (merged Topics)
« on: October 06, 2007, 09:55:12 am »
I found this method a much easier way to install Debian on my Zaurus 3200, thanks for the info ZDevil!

Other than wishing my Zaurus had 128, rather than 64, megabytes of RAM, I am a little concerned
that the bigbridgezau.sakura hard-disk image has not swap-space at all. After having spent a lot of time
downloading the base-system/XFCE and upgrading to lenny, is there any way to shrink the root partition
to create some swap space?

Oh, and I too am looking for a light-weight i.e. fast-loading, organizer/datebook/addressbook which will import my KO/PI
entries.

Cheerio, David.

Actually installing Debian can be as easy as installing Cacko, pdaXrom (non-uboot versions) and Angstrom.

There is an alternative way to install the base system without using network connection  (up to step 5).

[Don't give up if things fail; you can always use the original method described in the Titchy Linux wiki http://wiki.neilandtheresa.co.uk/Titchy_Linux/Installing, although it requires network connection all the way through]

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges 3.5.4.1 For Collie
« on: April 14, 2006, 03:00:58 am »
Those expanded .gz files (both opie and gpe) are definitely very large, I also ended up with .ext2 files 153 megabytes in size. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but you will need a decent size CF or SD card to store one, or both!, of them.

The hentges-*-image* files end in the extension '.tar.gz'
With Linux, they can be extracted using

tar xvzf (filename)

I am afraid I do not know how to extract tar/gz files with Windows, but there is bound to be a program somewhere! Tar is quite an old file archiving program, I remember using it when I had an Amiga

Anyway, the current initrd.bin files do not work with my collie (SL-5500), as CoreDump mentions previously in this thread.

"One initrd.bin from $MACHINE/hentges-*-image*

The file hentges-*-image* is a compressed tarball which contains initrd.bin, you'll have to extract it first (winzip can do so just fine)"

This is a cut from install instructions. I am unable to extract initrd.bin from the tarball. Can someone provide instructions on how to do this? Attempts to work with these .gz files result in a 157 MB ext2 file.

Thanks for you your help - Dan

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Installing Ipks In Oz 3.5.4 Problems
« on: March 26, 2006, 03:47:25 am »
Dear Tom,

I think I know the cause of this error, it is described in this thread...

Postnote : I have submitted this as bug # 1755 on the Opie bugzilla.

The problem is with the package manager, or perhaps one of the programs it is calling (?ipkg-link).

1. You can try installing opie-aqpkg instead, which does not seem to have that problem.
2. After installing with 'package manager' you can enter this command in the shell...

Code: [Select]
ipkg-link mount /media/ram/packages/

(there is probably a way to use 'ipkg-link add', you can try to interpret the instructions in the wiki.

3. You can manually create the missing directory, which would be /opt/QtPalmtop/pics/opieplayer2/skins/default_landscape. You will probably have to create a whole lot of other missing directories as well.

Cheerio, David.

Quote
...opened package manager and updated list no problem,  tried to install "task-opie-multimedia" problem...

installed to ramdownloaded and started install just fine
then had the following errors...

"Error linkling '/media/ram/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/pics/opieplayer2/skins/default_landscape/skin_down.orig.png' to '/opt/QtPalmtop/pics/opieplayer2/skins/default_landscape/skin_down.orig.png'

and many others that look like the skin links

the opie players show up in the applications tab but error out not finding the opieplayer2 skin

Dear Jan,

I agree that the documentation on www.openzaurus.org, while containing many gems of information, is quite difficult to use.

For example, there no link on the main page to 'Documentation' or 'OpenEmbedded Wiki'/'Opie Wiki'/'GPE Wiki'. However there is a link to the bugzillas. a link for developers and then a link to this forum! Quite alarmingly, there is no main link on the main page describing how to install software, or describing what software is available.

Perhaps this is a symptom of OpenZaurus only recently moving from developer plaything, to something which is becoming slightly usable? Although I think GPE is not quite ready for the user...too many package conflicts...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / How I Logout Of The Gpe Login Manager?
« on: March 25, 2006, 02:08:02 am »
Dear all,

I have GPE and 3.5.4/Opie installed on my Zaurus. When I logout of GPE, I am presented with the login manager (gpe-dm?), which is really comforting, coming from a Linux background.

But I cannot figure out how to quit the login manager, either to the shell (terminal 1), or to Opie (which I have set to terminal 3). Particularly if I am intending to use some Opie apps, I would like to shut down GPE completely. Just like I can shutdown Opie...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Installing Gpe Onto 3.5.4/opie Problems
« on: March 25, 2006, 01:23:41 am »
Dear all,

Has anyone managed to install GPE onto a SL-5500, or any other Zaurus, which already has 3.5.4/Opie installed?

I tried following the instructions on the OpenZaurus for 3.5.3/Opie, but run into various problems...

1. Once again gpe-base-depends complains that diet-x11 does not exist. I gather from some other posts that diet-x11 is provided by libX11, or perhaps one of those xserver packages, but who knows? I installed with forced depends.

2. Installing gpe-base-depends results in too many errors to count...

a. problems with pango (I think pango-query-modules wanted libXft.so.2)
b. gdk-pixbuf-loader-xpm (and -png and -jpeg) complain they can't create some files in the post-installation scripts because /etc/gtk-2.0 does not exist. I created the directory manually, then they complained that some other component of gdk-pixbuf was missing.
c. libesd0 could not be installed because osso-esd also owned /etc/esd.conf

Despite these problems, gpe started when I re-started my Zaurus after a shutdown. Difficult to manage at first, because Opie had also started up, and both Opie and GPE were trying to grab the screen and the input. Eventually, I managed to shutdown Opie and am now enjoying GPE.

Well, I can't really expect to enjoy GPE until I know all the components are successfully installed!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New To Oz Questions

Thanks lardman for such a quick reply, your suggestion works!

Well, I think I found the reason for the 'package manager' error.
Using the shell, I created the 'help/en/html' directory in /opt/QtPalmtop. The next time I installed a package using 'package manager', the calculator.html link was created without fuss.

Where can I report this error?

Postnote : I have submitted this as bug # 1755 on the Opie bugzilla.

For some reason, using the 'package manager' to install software onto the SD card, I get similar errors...

My SD card is ext2 format. The 'calculator.html' file does exist on the /media/card, but the 'help' directory does not exist on /opt/QtPalmtop

My SD card is ext2 format. The 'calculator.html' file does exist on the /media/card, but the 'help' directory does not exist on /opt/QtPalmtop

Sometimes the package seems to have installed correctly anyway.

But 'ipkg-link list /media/card' does not work because "/media/card/usr/lib/ipkg/info/*.list" does not exist. In fact, the only directory on my /media/card is 'packages'

Does that help anyone know what is going wrong?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Usb Networking 5500 <-> Xp Oz 3.5.4
« on: March 23, 2006, 04:59:38 am »
Thanks lardman, and also a very special thanks to GenericAnimeBoy, who posted on 21st March 2006 into that 'pinned' thread 'USB Connection Howto' in this forum. AnimeBoy's instructions were detailed and precise, including information about creating a network bridge in Windows XP which I would never have guessed.

Sadly, the link to Zaurus 5xxx Windows network drivers is broken on the ZaurusUserGroup site. Thankfully, I still have my original Sharp SL5500 Windows CD. I think two drivers needed to be installed from that CD-ROM, Windows asked for another driver after installing the first one.

I found it helpful to untick and retick the 'DHCP' tickbox in usbd0's configuration window of the Settings->Network program. The Zaurus then, on my system, always seems to pick up a network address which is always in use (such as 192.168.1.12). Windows XP complains angrily. To fix up that problem, I untick and re-tick that DHCP box again, and another address is allocated.

Cheerio, David.

The release for the 5500 uses 2.4.18, so the usb driver will be the same as it always was - use the inf file and driver that came with the original 5500 2.xx images. See the pinned thread in OZ/Common for a download link (iirc).

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Usb Networking 5500 <-> Xp Oz 3.5.4
« on: March 19, 2006, 01:31:59 am »
Dear all,

I have just installed 3.5.4 onto my old 5500, and can't wait to install OpenZaurus onto my C3100 when 3.5.4.1 is available!

I am having trouble networking my 5500 (with the OpenZaurus 3.5.4 ROM and Opie) to my Windows XP using the USB connection. I noticed that a linux.inf from Documentation/usb/ is available from the 2.6.x kernel source, which I tried to use. I modified all the references to 0525:a4a2 to 04dd:8004 in the linux.inf file (see attached, except the file is named linux.inf rather than linux.inf.txt). Windows XP accepts that the modified linux.inf file is for my 5500 machine, but later complains that the USB device (the 5500) is not working "a problem occurred during hardware installation, your new hardware may not work properly."

Trying to start usbd0 or usb0 on the 5500 fails to work, as could be expected, after Windows XP reports that the USB device is not working.

Any help would be appreciated, I would really like to access those 3.5.4 software feeds!

Otherwise, 3.5.4 looks really good!
Great work OZ team!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Bible For C3000?
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:59:45 pm »
Do the new Zaurii or Zaurii ROMs support Java? If so, then there is a Sword Bible reader for Java. It works reasonably well on my SuSE desktop box.

http://www.crosswire.org/bibledesktop/download.html

I installed BibleDesktop using javaws. I remember trying to install this program using the tarball '.tar.gz' a long time ago, and failing dismally. BibleDesktop, on my machine, can display Greek, Hebrew, Arabic etc.. 'out of the box'. It will not display Chinese/Korean

Good luck!

As time passes and the functionality of my C3000 is tested, I am seeing an increasing need for a Bible program. I use Quickverse on my desktop and Laridian has an incredible program (which included search engines, devotionals, and the hebrew and greek definitions) for Windows CE that I used on my late Jornada 720. Laridian has already notified me that they do not have such a program for linux-based pdas. Does anyone know of or have a Bible program similar to those described above that works with the C3000?

Accessories / Battery Extender Question
« on: April 09, 2004, 06:44:20 am »
I have successfully used a digital camera external battery (DPS9000) to recharge my Zaurus SL5500 (or use the 5500 when the battery is almost flat). The DPS9000 can also be used with most digital cameras, so it is a handy \'two-in-one\' option for all those 5500 owners with a digital camera (perhaps the vast majority of SL5500 owners!)

A review of the DPS 9000 can be found at ...

http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/DPS90...000/DPS9000.HTM

The DPS 9000 is thought to have 1800 mAh capacity (Digipower are a little coy about the true rating), which seems to be more than enough to chargea 5500 from completely flat. The DPS9000 also has a handy \'gas gauge\' feature, so you know if the DPS9000 is almost flat.

But the DPS9000\'s best feature is that is has a 5 volt converter cable for true five volt output, the 5 volt converter cable plugs directly into the 5500\'s external power socket. The cable\'s box becomes quite warm during usage, consistent with the reviewer\'s thoughts that the cable has a voltage regulator rather than just a diode.

Oh, and Digipower promptly sent me a replacement unit when the first unit I purchased arrived \'dead on arrival\'.

The main \'bad thing\' is the cost of the unit, which was $US40 when I purchased from BugEyeDigital. However, I considered it quite worthwhile when I could use it both for my Panasonic FZ10 and my Zaurus SL5500.
