to every n00b out there,

I'm starting a discussion on "how to get a better OS for my Z pda".

main goal of this thread is to understand what do newbie like me want most, and what we can do to get it done quickly.

from my point of view:
I'd like a good pim suite for GPE, a well working pdf reader and a media player.
I'd be glad to donate some $$ every month to anyone that could satisfy my needs...

what do you think about it?

bye

Thanks Greg.  I had seen that topic, but didn't know if the batteries were still available.  Hopefully, he will get back to me on the thread.

Cheers

There have been a few threads about extending battery life on the 5500 (collie).
Solutions come down to three.
1) Modifying camera similarly shaped camera batteries to fit collie, which is what our German friend was doing.
2) An external battery pack that plugs into the zaurus
3) Wiring an external battery ( same voltage) in PARALLEL to the zaurus battery.  A couple of people tried a battery from sony for the palm pda and seem to have had luck with that.  When I get some time I'll see if I can't dig up the threads.

There you go.  This is definitely a mod at your own risk.  I just bought two of the thin sony batteries
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/cate...T-42&type=store
I wired one directly to the positive and negative leads and then popped the battery in.  I've recharged it twice and it give an extra couple of hours or more, depending on what your running.
I'm not an electrician, but I figured that if I couldn't get more than an hour with a wifi card, the zaurus wasn't worth my time, so it was worth the risk.
I haven't noticed any heat issues, or any other issues for that matter.  I had it stuffed into a pda case to hold the whole thing on the back.  I'll see if I can come up with some kind of case mod to hold it on.

One last warning, screwing up your wiring or overheating these batteries can be a really bad thing.  Battery acid chemical burns are serious business, so attempt at your own risk.

Cheers.

IMO, yes. And a good manual could make any complex process simple anyway

I agree but complex is a relative term. What an ubuntu user might find too complex to attempt, a gentoo user might find routine.  I'm guessing the ideal manual would be able to bring an ubuntuan up to speed so that he would be able to get mplayer running on his zaurus without sym linking a couple of files and experimenting with a half a dozen command line flags before  some video will run without crashing the zaurus.
I've used linux for years now and would like to return the favor.  Finding a project that needs documentation would be ideal for me, because I don't code, but I can write, and  I'm looking for a summer project.

7
Is the interest in documentation for developers or users, because oz seems to be more of a developer community right now.  There is always a need for user documentation, but is 3.5.4 mature enough that all a user needs is a good manual.

Is there currently  anything  resembling a manual?

I'm not sure, you die the :
ipkg -d ram install libstdc\+\+6_4.0.1-3_arm.deb
ipkg-link add libstdc++6
part of the instructions right? It just worked for me.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=98272\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I tried to reinstall libstdc++6 and got a dependency error for gcc4
I'm a big fan of kismet but I think I hear wellenreiter calling.
Thanks for the replies.

I updated the Zaurus section of my site to show how to install   Nmap 3.81-2 and Kismet 2005-06-R1 under OpenZaurus 3.5.3.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=92055\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for this, but I couldn't quite get kismet off the ground.  I get an error
Code: [Select]
//usr/bin/kismet_server: /usr/lib/libstdcc++.so.6: version 'GLIBCXX_3.4.4' not found (required by //usr/bin/kismet_server)
Waiting for server to start before starting UI....
[1] + Done(1)
${BIN}/kismet_server --silent ${server}
root@collie:/#

/usr/lib/libstdcc++.so.6 is a link to /media/card/usr/lib/libstdcc++.so.6 so it is there.
I'm not sure what to do with the version not found bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Sandisk Connectplus

Has anyone had any luck with the sandisk connectplus.  The cf memory on the card seems to recognize but the wifi won't work.  If so what's the simplest way to get this going?

Hi,
Why is it that the latest 3.5.3 (zImage and opie off OE site) "sees" my connect plus as a storage media - but Hentges opie with the NEW 3.5.3 r21 doesn't ?

Niv
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Whats the output of "cat /proc/partitions" and "dmesg | grep mmcd"?

What's the exact output (use copy and paste) of "/etc/sdcontrol insert"?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=87572\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have the SanDisk ConnectPlus card also and the storage part has never worked on any Opie I've tried,  including the Hentges.  I just did a total fresh install of the latest available files for Hentges and it still doesn't recognize the storage part of the card - fortunately,  I got the wireless part to work by installing 3 ipk files.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=87869\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi Tomb, care to point out the 3 ipks? Thx!

Some people seem to be having luck with these cards.  I wonder how well they will run with wellenreiter or kismet.

5x00 Hardware / Wifi Cf Cards For Sharp Rom

Hi, I just joined these forums after searching for a solution to getting my WCF12 to work on the Zaurus SL-5600 I just bought. It's a refurbished model running ROM Version 1.32. Most info I find online says that the WCF12 will be recognized out of the box, but no luck. I see the advice to upgrade the 5500 to ROM Version 3.10, but it doesn't look like there is a Version higher than 1.32 available for the 5600. At least I haven't found one yet. Can anyone help?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have the same results.  Just got a new WCF12 from amazon plugged into my SL-5600,  configured everything and I cannot connect (to my DLink wireless router).  Anbody have any tricks out there for this card on SL-5600?  Perhaps they've changed the hardware in the card somehow?  What command line commands should we run to help figure this out?  Thanks and regards, -Phil

p.s. I'm using Watapon 1.6.1
p.p.s This link implies that WCF12 now uses prism3 chipset.  Can anyone confirm?

More data.  My new WCF12 came right up in OpenZaurus 3.5.3.  It must require newer drivers.

Have you tried kismet or wellenreiter with it?
