Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / A Home For Simpad People?
« on: December 06, 2004, 10:06:45 am »
IMHO, the only drawback for them will be related to the Deutsch Forum, that looks quite big.

But closing the forum can feel a little like wasting information. If their forum stays online for searching, then it'll be fine, I think. Let's hear from them. (Didn't check out their opinion on their forum -- you did post there, didn't you, Mickeyl ? :^) )

ELSI General Discussion / Some Help Arranging Projects..
« on: December 06, 2004, 06:48:50 am »
Is ELSI the new ZSI? If so, I want to help -- I'm new to the Zaurus, so I don't know most of the available software. Browsing them all can be fun. I'm in.

User Request for Applications / Looking for a wordprocessor.

I think txt2tags will do the job. Easier syntax than reST (IMHO) and it has an .ipk (but it needs Python).

Well, just try both and see what you like most.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Exit Opie-console Without Using The Stylus?
« on: December 01, 2004, 02:48:49 pm »
The exit command didn't work properly on Opie Terminal on OZ 3.5.1, at least here. It stopped the console but didn't exit the program.

Just replaced it with embeddedkonsole. :^)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Anyone got .OGG/MP3 playing on OZ3.5.1?

6. Removing songs from XMMS is unintuitive: tap "Sub", choose the songs you want removed (drag if necessary) and tap "Sub" again.
Wow, quite a MONSTROUS usability problem here. o.O

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz 3.5.2 Coming Any Minute Now.
« on: December 01, 2004, 02:29:49 pm »
I installed 3.5.2 and after the frustration with 3.5.1 I must say I'm happy with 3.5.2.

My main problems, at least for now, are with Opera and XMMS (couldn't run qpe-vexed, but that is secondary).
Beaming has gotten better, now I can beam contacts and other stuff, only thing I still don't know how to do is to connect to the internet with GPRS on my T300.
I replaced the package manager (saw it on another topic here) for AQPkg and opie-symlink, but in fact I don't use it to install software, only to check package names -- installing has been done with ipkg and ipkg-link thru ssh, as recommended on the release notes.

Congratulations to all developers! :^)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / My (bad) Experience With Oz 3.5.1
« on: November 29, 2004, 04:46:01 pm »
Ok, Mickeyl, I understand you. Sorry for the mistake then. Just needed to tell that altough ppl tell lots of good things about the OZ ROM, it is (at least for me) quite challenging to make work. Or maybe i'm just unlucky that some of the software I wanted is problematic. Don't know. I'll try 3.5.1 for a while, and test 3.5.2 to see the improvements. And try not to get (too much) angry at Opie.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / My (bad) Experience With Oz 3.5.1

Found two more problems on ToDo.

- Trying to add a Category, it does not accept the name on the first OK. You have to add one, press OK (don't bother to change the name before the OK, it doesn't work), then edit categories again, rename the "New Category" category, and then you have your category.

- When I add an alarm, it defaults to "silent". o.O

Just weird.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / My (bad) Experience With Oz 3.5.1
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:18:32 pm »
Yes, I ipkg-linked them manually (o.O), and yes I restarted Opie. Even rebooted. XMMS, Opera and Media Player Icons appeared, but tapping them didn't open them. Running fro console gave all kind of errors. XMMS gave me segmentation faults, something about _7Q and Symbols on Opera (can't remember now, sorry), and missing libraries on Media Player. If i install software with all "Force" options enabled, shouldn't it just work, assuming it is properly linked? (By the package manager or by hand, but preferably by the package manager -- that's its function)

On Sharp ROM, you can edit the menu using an already installed app. Tab Settings, IIRC. That's not perfect, but makes the needed customization job. Something at least like this could be delivered with the basic OZ software (and could be removed to make room for better software to make the same job).
In fact, I got used to context menus from desktop OS's and PalmOS.

Hi all.

My problems with OZ 3.5.1 (or: what I expected to do with a basic OZ and couldn't figure out how to do it):

1) Can't beam or receive contacts or images to or from my Sony-E T300.
2) Can't install software properly. At least embedded-konsole worked, but xmms, opie-mpegplayer, mp3blaster, qplot, opera, korganizer, lightapplet, subapplet, all were nowhere to be found (not installed?) or non-functional.
3) Can't rename/move/delete icons from the Launcher. Shouldn't a tap-and-hold popup a context menu?
4) What's the language indicator (that appears left of the clock) about? Changed it from EN to PT but didn't notice a thing. No context help available on that. If it is supposed to make accented characters with the thumbboard then please explain me how that works, cause it would be a very welcome addiction.

Don't know if this list is complete, but probably not. Butthings will be added here, you just wait. :^)

My opinion: OZ is good (like a lot of other Linux related stuff), but just like a lot of other Linux related stuff, it lacks some usability.

Suggestions (at least for now -- more to come, probably, in the case I stay with OZ):
- Context menus should be more disseminated, and should not take too long to appear (maybe user configurable time). I have old shortcuts on the DocTab and don't know how to delete them. Expecting tap-and-hold, delete the link, not the file.
- System should be able to do more from scratch, just in case people have bad times configuring their PCs and Zs to talk to each other, and internet and stuff. It would be better for everyone to have more software and uninstall the unneeded than the other way around.
- Trying to add a feed on Package Manager (AKPkg too), the form fields are available. I fill them, press update and nothing. Took some time to figure out that I needed to press New (and reset the form =\ ) before filling the (already enabled) form. Solution: disable the form if New is not pressed, or "press the button automatically" when entering the configure screen.

I'm not a Linux expert, and this is a palmtop. I really expect to do things using the GUI, mainly. On PalmOS and Windows Mobile everything is nice and GUI-oriented, and that's very good. OZ should be that way, it would make things easier for everyone. And I really have high hopes on OZ, that's why I complain -- to try to make it better.

Hope the developers hear my suggestions, and everyone else to coment about these and try to help me to not switch back to Sharp's again, if possible. :^)

Thanks in advance.

Security and Networking / Another Networking Tutorial
« on: November 27, 2004, 09:40:19 am »
Hi all. Having had a lot of troubles with OZ 3.5.1 (so much that I switched back to Sharp 3.10, at least for now), I wrote a tutorial on making the Z available via ssh and accessing the internet when on the cradle. The link is:

http://dipnlik.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ZNetworking

Jus want people to see it and make comments, improvements, etc.

General Discussion / Zsi2 Layout Voting
« on: November 27, 2004, 08:42:08 am »
I agree that with so many contestants, a second round would be fair.

Some opinions:
by626 has great colors and a good small layout. Didn't like by6261.
chaosS is great too, congrats.
network guy's are marvelous pieces of minimality. networkguy2 is my favorite one.
yzord's are just too Crystal for me, I don't like it.
skoopie's orange funk was a great surprise. Blue funk is not that good (maybe lighter tones of blue can help), and smooth metal is not my type.

So, I'd vote networkguy, but seeing yzord's on the lead, i vote for my 2nd one, skoopie's orange funk.

General Discussion / Tab Problem
« on: November 24, 2004, 01:09:18 pm »
The new tab only appears on the main window if it has icons.

To move an icon, on Tab Settings, you need to tap the program you want to move and press one of the buttons below, i think it is the button with a left arrow.

Sorry for not being so accurate, I just used the Sharp ROM for a week, can't remember more details.
