Hi,

I just noticed that in the "System Info" screen, there is one of those "warning" indicators next to the slot number.  The icon that consists of a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside the triangle.  So, even though the device is correctly identified as a "Seagate" and a "fixed disk", there seems to be some type of error detected at some level of the OS.

Anyway, this was with a different 4G micro-drive, same type as the first one that I tried...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I believe that I tried /mnt/cf as one of the first devices that I passed to fdisk, but that did not work.  It seems that CF memory cards work fine in the slot.

I have not tried another micro-drive, but I will.  I obtained several recently, and you may be correct, in that the device is somehow malfunctioning, but since the device shows up as being present, and is identified properly, I tend to think that there is some "device name" associated with it.  Not necessarily mounted, since there may not be a filesystem created in it yet.

Someone is dropping off a USB-based CF type II reader device, probably next week, which will allow me to hopefully see how these micro-drives work under Windows 7, and/or if I create a LINUX development system again on one of my older machines, like I used to have.

In addition, I ordered a PCMCIA to CF Type II capable adapter, that may operate correctly on my older ThinkPad 560 machine, which I hope will also be able to read and write to the micro-drive.

This whole ordeal caught me by surprise, as I really just expected a /mnt/cf that had almost 4G of free space on a FAT filesystem when I inserted the drive.

Hello,

I recently acquired a few 4G micro-drives, that are designed for use in a CF type II slot.
I am hoping to make use of this on both a C-750 and SL-6000 at some point, and I started getting somewhat interested again, in using my C-750 for many tasks.

I actually have invested a few hours so far, on the C-750, just trying to get the 4GB CF micro-drive get to a point where I can use it.  The "system" (Cacko) recognizes it as far as showing that it is inserted, and also allows an eject of the device.  It correctly identifies the device and manufacturer, but that is the only indication that I get from the "OS".

But there is nothing in the "dmesg" output, and I have tried "guessing" at possible device names to pass to fdisk, but I have had no success.

If anyone has any ideas at all, that may be helpful, please pass them on...  Thank You.

Thanks for the info...

I am not really up for attempting to build a kernel for the C-750, at this time anyway.

I figured I would mention it in this thread, as someone may know.

I will not expect a "ready to use on C-750 void linux" distro any time soon... :)

Wow... I am just skimming some posts now, but I will return. :)

Thank You so much once again, and I need to get back to my C-750.

I have been messing around with it, and need to figure out how to use a CF-hard-drive, as I cannot seem to get fdisk to recognize it.  CF flash cards work fine though.  Also, mplayer locked up the machine when it crashed, and I had to reset it by removing the battery!  I do not know if the sound is supposed to sound so "tinny" and weak when using the built-in speaker, but I am amazed that it even HAS one. :)

Thank You for the information, that it does not currently support the C-750.

I do not, at this time, know what a "recent kernel" is.  I also do not know different that the C-750 is compared to the C-1000 or C-3x000 devices.

If there is anything that I can do, since perhaps the "gate" has been that some developers to not have access to a C-750, please let me know.  I am starting to get used to the C-750, and the battery is sure lasting longer than the one in my SL-6000 for which there does not seem to be a replacement available anywhere.

Within a week or so, I should have some type of development system set up on the C-750, but at the moment, I am just starting to "tinker around" with it.

Thanks, John

Hi, and many thanks to all that provide some information.

I saw that there were some C-750 NAND backup files there, which may work out very well.

I am a bit hesitant to just "jump in" just yet, as I have read about some of the issues with folks that have "bricked" their units, by using a corrupted NAND backup file.

I have only updated "ROMs" in the (somewhat distant) past on an SL-5500 and SL-6000, and not by using the NAND backup/restore facility, but by putting a kernel and some variant of a file system on a compact flash card, and using a different option in the diagnostic menu.

I recently acquired a "bargain lot" of CF type II 4GB Seagate micro-drives.  I have placed on inside the C-750, and although it shows up in Cacko LINUX's "System Info" application, in the "Devices" section, there is no mention of the LINUX device name there, or in the "dmesg" output.

I need to learn about how to use the card, and I am hoping that I can "use" or "install" varying OS systems, ultimately, by simply shutting down, switching out the CF disk, and rebooting. :)

Thanks again, John

What is a "Global Moderator"?

At this time I do not have any Zaurus devices to donate.  I recently did acquire an inexpensive C-750 and I previously used an SL-6000 extensively.

I hope to become active in the forum again, and at some point hope to find an ideal environment for both devices, for development, as well as general varied uses.

It is unclear if any of the OS(es) that I used to use are still available on the web, as in the last two days I just resumed my Zaurus and LINUX activities, after many years of not doing so. :)

Perhaps at some point I will be willing to trade my original spare SL-6000, but not at this time.

Best Wishes, with your efforts and everything else, John

This "rings a bell", and I think I also ran into this, but so long ago...

Hello!

I have just started using this forum again, after many years, and starting to "catch up" on things.

It is nice to heard that someone is working on a new Zaurus distro, and I also share the feelings behind some of the statements regarding the "fun" that someone posted about, speaking about their use of a C-1000 for LINUX, after "dusting off the cobwebs".

I somewhat recently acquired a C-750, but I used to primarily use an SL-6000.

I do not see any reason why an X environment, which is "speedy" can not be achieved, but of course that term is subjective.  In the past, I used PDAXROM, PDAXQTROM, and even tried a myriad of X servers on the Zaurus.  At one point I ran a full JAVA 2 on an SL-5500 before acquiring an SL-6000, and it was quite slow concerning Java 2 (also known as "swing"), but it did function, and at the time, I believe I was using the OpenZaurus OS.

Anyway, for the next week or so, I hope to catch up, to check out "void LINUX", and possibly what has been done in the LFS domain as well.  I am finding that many of the websites, and files are no longer available, so for the time-being I am "stuck" with the Cacko installed on the C-750. :)

Best Wishes, John

Hello,

I just became aware of a "new" LINUX for the Zaurus platform(s).

I have not seen any mention of whether or not it functions on the C-750, and I am very interested to know, as I recently acquired one.  In the past I have mostly used the standard ROM and also PDAXROM on the SL-6000.

So, I would love to know if "Void Linux" runs on the C-750 or SL-6000, and Thanks, John

Hi Folks,

As I stated in the subject, I do realize that it is 2022, 18 years after the SL-6000 was released, and I was heavily involved with LINUX, embedded systems in general, as well as developing my own operating systems, graphical and development environments, and even spent almost a year working in somewhat of a private sub-contacting role to define and develop what would eventually become "Android" it seems for LG, through the SavaJe organization.  (The company was sold off to Sun Microsystems around 2004 or so, and we had produced the world's fastest JAVA system, which was a completely original, novel, and somewhat "radical" effort some could say, to produce a JAVA operating system and environment for handhelds and "phones", that was standalone, and was the entire operating system as well as a complete user environment, requiring no other OS underneath it.

Since the JAVA source code was obtained from Sun Microsystems in the early days of SavaJe, it was very fitting and appropriate that the entire asset-set and source code was ultimately returned to the domain of Sun Microsystems, and somewhat surprising to me that LG ultimately made the decision to "go with" a  LINUX-based OS for their Android offering.

Some of you may or may not remember the MISKINIX project that I embarked on, which was a complete proof-of-concept 3D Windowing system and multitasking environment that I developed for use on Palm and compatible handhelds from 2002-2004, which I suspended due to becoming involved with some more commercial and career-based endeavors.  In any case, I recently posted a bit of information and screenshots of the MISKINIX system on FaceBook, as some folks were interested, and I no longer maintain the miskinix.com website, and the PalmSide web site in Austria that originally hosted my MISKINIX forum, and "web site", was shutdown many years ago.

Anyway, I visited this forum once again today, not knowing if it would still be here, and what I would find.  I see that there are no longer model-specific forums for the Zaurus platform(s), but there is still a PDAXROM forum which was comforting to find.

I noticed that many of the sites such as "the grinder" which hosted the variant of PDAXROM known as PDAXQTROM was no longer available, and at this time, I do not know if I will every be able to find some of the software that I am searching for, or be able to contact some of the folks that I used to "chat with", if you will, in and outside of the forum.

I have recently acquired a Zaurus C-750, which seems to be functioning properly, and I plan to attempt to setup a PDAXROM, or some other X-based environment, for both use and development, as I find the pocket-sized and powerful computer system paradigm very useful, and I do not care much for "smart phones", and the "luggage" (such as surveillance capabilities) that they offer.

Anyway, I wanted to touch base with the community once again, and I hope that some folks will chime in.  I spent about an hour this morning searching for the "stock C-750" NAND backup file, but I became a bit disappointed when I saw that the one that was previously available had been corrupted and is no longer available.

Best Wishes, Happy Sunday, and I realize that this was quite a "long" post. :)  John

Hello,

I just saw this, after visiting the forum for the first time in many years! :)

Hello everyone, BTW...

I am not sure if you are still in need of an SL-6000, but I have an extra a backup device, which is the first one that I obtained, has a small scratch on the screen, but if you really need one, and cannot locate one anywhere else, perhaps we can work something out.  I did see one on Ebay recently, but I have not checked in months.

Anyway, let me know...  Thanks, and Best Wishes to everyone, John
