Zaurus - pdaXrom / Failed Install
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:58:26 am »
Quote from: xof7
I attempted to install pdaxrom on my c760. I tried copying the files to my sd card as I had with angstrom and then restarting, going into the emergency mode, etc etc; but that didnt work.

I saw a post mentioning uboot, so i downloaded that from the same directory that I found pdaxrom,http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/pdaxrom/download/r197/c7x0-c860/, and repeated the process that I used above... It went through the process and said:
"Writing 00000" and then it counted upwards for a few minutes.

It got to the point where it says u-boot is now installed, now rebooting. I locked up then. Even when I disconnected the power and flipped the latch on the battery, it stayed on. After popping the battery out and popping it back in, I tried to do the emergency boot like before, no go.... Now the charge light doesn't even turn on at all...

Any ideas?
Hey xof7 - I don't know whether you got your system fixed, but I just ran through the same process, and had similar issues.  The first time I did it, I did the NAND restore too -- but then I found a message (can't find it again now or I'd link to it - thanks to OP whoever you are!) suggesting that I needed to hold the OK button down for 10 seconds or more on boot in order to get to the emergency console.

What actually works for me (with a c760) - after installing u-boot - is to remove the battery, remove A/C power, leave the battery cover off & battery switch open, then plug in A/C power while holding down OK -- it takes 10-15 seconds before I get any response at all, then it boots into the u-boot emergency system and I can install pdaXrom from there.

I was pretty sure I'd had a hardware failure the first time I tried this -- it's been a couple years since I'd used my c760, and I was worried about it.  It turns out that it's OK -- it just takes an awful long time to respond to the OK & boot the emergency system.

Hope this helps.

I know this is not exactly a Zaurus, but one of it's Linux-powered cousins. First off this is a 100% Honest and legit sale, which I can provide any new pictures than what has been taken, documentation, serial number, etc.  This is my own unit I am trying to sell, In a bit of a bind where I just recently migrated to Mac, and I need to sell this and find a PDA that works with my iMac. For any serious questions or pictures of the items, please feel free to contact me.
OK - now you've got me curious.  I haven't been paying much attention to the PDA market since the C-1000 & cousins came out.  I was vaguely aware that Archos had some entries that people are running some of the Zaurus software on, but I have no details.

Could I potentially replace my C-1000 & 20 GB .mp3 player with this, and cart around only one device?

Thanks,

Deals and Great Z Buys / Sl-cxx00 Docking Station?

One thing you might run into is a power issue...

Standard desktop/notebook USB ports push out more power compared to our Z's...

So if this isn't a powered hub... then I wouldnt expect it to work...

Good point.  I had assumed it would have to have external power, but I went to Kensington.com to check, and they don't mention it.  That makes it somewhat less useful. Of course, hacking it to add a power supply wouldn't be too hard.

This looks like it could be a nice docking station for Z's with USB hosting capabilities.

It's a USB 2.0 device with built in Ethernet, Keyboard & Mouse Ports, Serial & Parallel ports, and extra USB ports.

$49.99 today only (Friday. June 23rd) at Yugster.com

It looks like it normally goes for $85+
I don't know about drivers for all the devices, but I know that people have reported using most of those devices using only the drivers built into the latest kernels.

I don't own one, haven't tried one, and have never bought anything from this vendor.

I have tried using various USB devices such as card reader, USB memory stick, self powered NTFS drives & my Canon IXUS camera. Each item is displayed in the Devices tab under System info so the Z can see what ever I attach, so I assume they must be mounted, but I am unable to access them.

I don't know whether it's an issue in your case, but you should keep in mind that the Z doesn't provide enought power for most USB devices to run off.  You might find you get better results with a powered hub for some devices.

My C1000 doesn't provide enough power for my USB-Ethernet dongle.

Aside from that, I've had very good luck with the stock Cacko rom recognizing most of the devices I've tried (Flash drive, Ethernet dongle, GPS, self-powered HD)

gmini 500, it's new...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124653\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Sorry -- I haven't seen a gmini yet.  I can't really help.

It can only be one of three things though: the AC supply, the battery, or the charging circuitry.

Fortunately, the ease of repair for each is proportional to the probability of a fault.
(The easiest things to fix are more likely to be the problem).

Check the usual suspects: Make sure your adaptor is supplying power.  It it is, see if you can find a way to charge the battery externally.  If you can do both, then it's the charging circuitry.

Sorry I couldn't help more,

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Items Not To Plug Into Usb Port

I have a USB host cable on order and have never used the onboard USB port.

The only item I know not to plug into the USB port directly would be external Hard Drives (typical hi current device) without the aid of a self powered  usb hub.

Any other wise suggestions of what not to plug into the USB port.   Been reading thru posts of ppl frying their Z with USB sync cables.  yikes!  I guess that comes down to cable quality for that one.

The Z doesn't really provide enough power for most USB devices.  My USB-Ethernet controller won't work w/o using a powered hub.

It is really pissing me off.  This is a 3100 with cacko rom and it will only show up as a usb drive the firat couple of times.  Then it will stop working and dmesg on my linux box will say "Unknown partition table".  But once I reboot my zaurus it will work again.

Anyone else have these issues?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=123992\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I'm using Cacko too, and have noticed a similar problem.

It may not be the same issue, but I've found that I get more consistent connections to my Win boxen if I change the "PC Link" settings in between every session.  For example, I'll set it to "Storage, SD card", connect to a win box once, and then set it back to "PC link" afterwards.  When I need to connect as a USB drive again, I'll change the setting back.

The USB drive utility doesn't seem to work reliably multiple times with the same setting.  It's not a great way to do it, but it's better than rebooting.

I have bought an archos player on ebay and when i got it this morning everything wa great, i put my music on it, checked a short movie. But when i tried to charge it, the light didn't light up and now if i try to start it up, the only thing I see is the bootscreen. The bootscreen remains as long as I hold the on-button, when I release it, the archos turns down. Can I do something?

Yeah -- it sounds like it isn't charging.  What model is it?  The early Jukeboxes had a lot of trouble with broken solder joints at the battery connectors.

If you're trying to attach it to the Z you won't get away with running any 2.5", 3.5" or 1.8" drive without an AC adapter.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124622\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Actually you can -- you just need to have batteries for the HD as well.  It doesn't need to be AC.

I use a cheap HD based .mp3 player (Archos Jukebox, bought used for $50) with a 30GB drive that runs off 4AA batteries. You can theoretically update it to 127 GB, if you need to.

I'm selling my SL-C760, since I've replaced it with an SL-C1000.

It's got a scratch on the outside of the case (I misplaced the pictures I took -- I'll post them soon), and the cosmetics are consitent with living in my pocket for the past two years, but it's in good working order (actually works better than it did when I bought it).

It had blown charger fuses when I got it, which I replaced (see this post).  It's been charging fine since then, and is charging now as I type this (I try to keep the batteries charged, even if I'm not using it.)  I still have some extra fuses, and can include some of them if you think you may be able to use them.

I also have an extra BL-08 battery (not a true Sharp battery, but works just as well), and an external battery charger that can go with it.

Included in this offer:
SL-C760
Sharp EA-72 charger
USB cable
Sharp CE-BC21 external battery charger
extra BL-08 battery

I can add a CF wireless card if you need one, but I don't have any extra memory cards (unless you want a 64MB CF card).

Asking $325 for the package, and an extra $20 for the 802.11b CF card if you want it.

Thanks,

David

Hardware Mods / Can I Use Sl750's Battery On Sl1000?

Are the batteries of 750 and 1000 similar so that i can use it on 1000?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=118720\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The BL-08 works.  I don't remember which the C750 uses.  However, I also have a 3rd party BL-08 copy, which works fine on my C760, which does NOT work on the SL-C1000.

Make sure it's a genuine Sharp battery, or it may not work.

Accessories / Usb Wifi Dongle Advice

Hi there

I have a zhost cable and, although I already have a Cfwireless card, t is a pain to be constantly swapping over (I am not sure how kindly the Zaurus views this either)

I want to know if anyone has had any success in using a wifi dongle on the end of the ZHost cable.

many thanks,

Jonathan

I've been meaning to give it a try, but haven't bought a dongle yet.

See [a href=\"http://www.iral.com/~albertr/linux/zaurus/wireless/]albertr's site[/url] for news on installing a USB Wifi dongle inside a C1000.
