Hi blachner!

I'm sorry but I've been unable to download your cvs code. I tried this:

cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.cebix.net:/home/cvs/cebix login

Thats asks for a password so I push enter and then it says

no such user anonymous in CVSROOT/passwd

Could you please give full instructions for cvs access please?

Thanks!

Dan

I sent you a personal message.

But for anonymous access to Frodo CVS, have a look at: [a href=\"http://frodo.cebix.net/]http://frodo.cebix.net/[/url]

Hi blachner!

I'd like to try compiling FrodoSDL for pdaXrom. Where can I download the source?

You can get it from CVS (HEAD of repository Frodo4):

cvs.cebix.net:/home/cvs/cebix

Anonymous CVS access to checkout should work.

Than run the ./autogen.sh script in the Src directory.
And after this: ./configure --with-embedded-extension=qtopia
This configures Frodo to use the SDL GUI and a screen resolution of 320x240.

Regards

Bernd

Unfortunately I haven't much time to work on Frodo in my spare time. So I only make slow process. But in CVS Head is now a first version of Frodo with a SDL GUI. Maybe it is already useful on Zaurus, but I haven't tested it on Zaurus yet. At the moment it is not really tested and not all GUI dialogs work, but for example the dialog for the drives should work. It is not completely finished yet!!!!!

My main goal is to make Frodo useful on devices without keyboard. For example on the Nokia 770/800 or on the upcoming OpenMoko phone. At the moment my main target is the Nokia 770 what is also the reason why I don't compile and test it on my Zaurus 5500 at the moment. But If someone wants to make alpha tests on the Zaurus, please do.   But you must compile and package it by your self.

So the main problem for the Nokia 770 and other devices without keyboard is the nonexisting on screen keyboard in Frodo. So this is the next step I'm working on.

Btw. I have attached screen shots from the new Frodo SDL GUI of the main dialog and the drive dialog.

RCP and eRCP are high considered development projects of the eclipse org. There is a big need to port that to linux pda and I hope they will ported very soon.
There is now code for a Qt Embedded implementation of eSWT in the  ercp cvs. This initial code comes from IBM. It seems it is the code of IBMs formerly commercial eSWT implementation which is now licensed under the epl.

The build scripts in cvs are for building this code for IBMs J9 Java implementation on the Zaurus. There is much work to do before this eSWT and later eRCP port is usable but a first step is done. If someone is interested to help with development, please write to the ercp newsgroup.

Dear Ford,

thank you for the input. Yes it seems like the Frodo port still has some rough edges that
Yes, this is true. It is still not possible to change disks while Frodo is running. So you can only use games/applications which use on disk.

I'm now working to integrate the GUI into Frodo directly, that makes the external program FrodoGUI obsolete. At the moment the the GUI is already viewed but the preferences are not really set and it is not stable yet.  I do this in my spare time and I hope I can finish this soon (this year  ). I will release it, when it is finished and stable and an Onscreen Keyboard is also implemented which is necessary for running Frodo on the Nokia 770.

The GUI integrated in Frodo would also help to run Frodo on Maemo (Nokia 770) and maybe GPE. At the moment I only have a version for the PC and Nokia 770 compiled, because I don't have a Zaurus development environment set up yet. I hope I can set up one again for the Sharp ROM ore maybe OpenZaurus/OpenEmbedded. Maybe someone can help to integrate the changes in OpenEmbedded once its finished.

I also think that it would be great to port this to the Zaurus Java Environments. There is also a  [a href=\"http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=2284&group=eclipse.technology.ercp#2284]new Message on the eRCP Newsgroup[/url] which asks which other GUI should be supported by eSWT/eRCP. It seems a port of eSWT/eRCP to Qt embedded is in consideration, but help is needed.

Binary incompatibilty isn't caused by qtopia, but by different compiler versions and fp-emu formats.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102838\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yes, I know. You are right. And I think this should be avoided in the future too. I think it would be better to stay on one compiler for one Qtopia/Opie version.

Qt/Qtopia / Qtopia 4 News
« on: November 08, 2005, 07:27:16 am »
There is an interesting article about the Trolltech Developer Days in Munich. Qtopia 4 is also mentioned there. I quoted the Qtopia 4 part of the article below.
Quote
Qtopia is another success story for Trolltech. The company currently has 85 customers using Qtopia, from which 30 are mobile phone builders. Linux is the disruptive force in the handset industry and Trolltech's goal is that 100 million handsets are sold using Qtopia by 2008. Qtopia 4, which is currently under development, will be based on Qt 4. Some of its highlights will be a native sandbox for safe execution of programs, an integrated SQL database on every device and advanced graphics due to the new Arthur painting subsystem in Qt4. Some of the advantages of Qtopia over .Net are: customisability of the user interface, lower memory consumption and the availability of the source code.

I think, some things sounds interesting, like "integrated SQL database" or "a native sandbox for safe execution of programs". Especially the sandbox can help to enable installation of Qtopia Applications on Qtopia Phone Edition, I hope.

In my opinion, it would be nice, if a new major version of Qtopia could bring Trolltech and the developer community (Opie/OpenZaurus/...) here closer together again, at least for the PDA edition, and binary incompatible ROMs based on Qt Embedded 4 can be avoided. Because I think binary incompatible ROMs are not user and not (application) developer friendly.

Why should RS-MMC limited to 256MB? 1 GB RS-MMC already exist.

We should do a special version for "special" people, replacing /sbin/init with /bin/vi :-)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88173\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I like vi, because I learned how to use it and because it is available on most Linux/Unix systems. But hopefully you don't take vi as an example of user friendlyness.

I find it especially amusing that Ångström is allready deemed user-unfriendly without having seen a single release or snapshot. I don't like trolls, but people trolling stuff a-priori is far worse.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88171\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

If you can read, you see that I clarify that the name Ångström is a little user unfriendly in my opinion. You also can read that I talk of OpenZaurus and not of the yet non existent Angstrom Distribution when I talk from "user unfriendly".

My failure was to do this in this thread, because it was Off Topic. Yes.

Dude, for more than half the world "A" is a "special character"
Your point.   Thats true.

Quote
"Å" and "ö" are perfectly legitimate Latin 1 glyphs and with any decent desktop envirmonment are just not that difficult to type. Not to mention that fact that if one simply types "Angstrom" in virtually any context it's obvious that they mean "Ångström" (I'm assuming you know what an ångström is). Get over it.
Not difficult to type? If it is not on the keyboard it is difficult to type. But one arguement angainst Angstrom and for an other unique name is internet search.  Ok, you can just search Angstrom and an other related word. But Ok, for me Ã…ngström is now just Angstrom and we can forget this discussion.

Oh. Ok it seems there are the files that Sharp provided before on the Zaurus developer site. I have setup this cross compiler already. With some scripts, which I wrote for me, its usable but not really comfortable or easy to use.

Is there a newer version of Qtopia Free SDK? Because the SDK I use is incompatible to the gcc installed on newer SuSE distributions. I only see RPMs for SuSE 8.2 on your link and I'm not sure if SuSE 8.2 and 9.2/9.3 uses a compatible gcc at the moment.

Yes I know this. And I set up it last weekend for Collie. I would try it before but the harddsik of my old computer wasn't big enough.

Till now I compiled only the Nano package to test if it works and this works without problems. But really, Open Embedded is nice and a good tool to build a whole distribution. But for a application developer, I think, it is unecessary complicated. For this, only a cross compiler setup is needed that just works and is easy installable.

At the moement I'm in the process to choose a ROM for my Zaurus which I will use and for which I will develop/compile the next versions of my programs. I tend to Open Zaurus, because Sharp dropped support for users outside Japan and because I think Open Zaurus have some nice features. The only thing with Open Zaurus what really bothers me is the compatibility problem between Open Zaurus and Sharp ROMs with comercial apps (especially Jeode and Opera). Especially because the compat libs seems to have some problems in the newest Open Zaurus release.

As I now see on qtopia.net there is also Qtopia 2.1.2 ROM for the Zaurus. Maybe this would also be an option. Can I find more information about it anywhere? Is it fully compatible to the Sharp ROM?

Oe is overkill and difficult to use if you are just simply wanting to cross compile or develop applications, ...
I don't find a (free) cross compile environment that is not difficult to use for Qtopia and none for Opie/OpenZaurus. And this is a problem for developer who only want to develop applications for the platform. Trolltech provides no cross compiler at all as far as I know. But maybe it is more problem of the device manufactureres. Sharp provided some packages with the cross compiler tools. I don't know if Sharp is still doing this, but the english developer site of Sharp is gone as far as I know. Maybe you must learn japanese to get the development packages.

... and it doesn't use gcc2, so anything it builds is not compatible with the Zaurus applications out there, or stock Zaurus that Sharp is currently shipping.
Yes this incompatibility is a problem for both sides. For the OpenZaurus side because the few, but maybe important, comercial programs can not be used or only used with some trouble (compat libs but they have also some problems).

And a problem for the Sharp side, because many Open Source applications are primary developed or compiled  for OpenZaurus now. This is not really a good situation, especially for the users.
