Qtopia 4 News
« on: November 08, 2005, 07:27:16 am »
There is an interesting article about the Trolltech Developer Days in Munich. Qtopia 4 is also mentioned there. I quoted the Qtopia 4 part of the article below.
Quote
Qtopia is another success story for Trolltech. The company currently has 85 customers using Qtopia, from which 30 are mobile phone builders. Linux is the disruptive force in the handset industry and Trolltech's goal is that 100 million handsets are sold using Qtopia by 2008. Qtopia 4, which is currently under development, will be based on Qt 4. Some of its highlights will be a native sandbox for safe execution of programs, an integrated SQL database on every device and advanced graphics due to the new Arthur painting subsystem in Qt4. Some of the advantages of Qtopia over .Net are: customisability of the user interface, lower memory consumption and the availability of the source code.

I think, some things sounds interesting, like "integrated SQL database" or "a native sandbox for safe execution of programs". Especially the sandbox can help to enable installation of Qtopia Applications on Qtopia Phone Edition, I hope.

In my opinion, it would be nice, if a new major version of Qtopia could bring Trolltech and the developer community (Opie/OpenZaurus/...) here closer together again, at least for the PDA edition, and binary incompatible ROMs based on Qt Embedded 4 can be avoided. Because I think binary incompatible ROMs are not user and not (application) developer friendly.

Binary incompatibilty isn't caused by qtopia, but by different compiler versions and fp-emu formats.

Yes, I know. You are right. And I think this should be avoided in the future too. I think it would be better to stay on one compiler for one Qtopia/Opie version.

that's not a huge number of customers, to be honest... no wonder they have to charge so much for the licenses!

I wish they had an intermediate license, which allowed hobby/shareware development, so the price of entry was much lower.
