Debian / Debian Eabi With Installer

I tried to install several times - was successful, but when I rebooted each time I got a Kernel Panic?  So I decided to give the U-Boot - 2.6.23.1 - EABI method a try.  I was successful in getting that up and running, but too many little bugs compared to the TichyLinux system.  Debating what to do next.  I did notice that if I do not press 2 on reboot with U-boot I get a similar Kernel Panic error - is that the mistake I made with Cortez-Debian?  Do you need to press 2 on boot?

Uboot is a multiple boot system :
- pressing nothing : boot from flash
- pressing 1 : boot from SD
- pressing 2 : boot from microdrive
- pressing 3 : boot from CF
- pressing OK : install new kernel and/or system on flash

So,
Pressing "2" boots from microdrive, pressing "1" boots from SD which can contain Titchy. You don't have to choose, you can have both !

Chero.

Thanks Chero

But I guess I was not clear - I do understand how U-boot works, but what I was asking was is it also necessary to Press 2 to boot from hard drive with Cortez-Debian?  I ask this because I got the same error trying to boot Cortez-Debian as I did when I forgot to press 2 booting with Uboot.  I know cortez's version did not use uboot - so it is unlikely, but....

I am also getting an error trying to mount the swap partition, but there is another error earlier that may be the cause - on first boot after flashing I get the following;

Setting up filesystem, please wait ...
modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.23/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Mount: Mounting none on /dev failed: No such device
modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.23/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Mount: Mounting devfs on /dev failed: No such device
modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.23/modules.dep: No such file or directory

modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.23/modules.dep: No such file or directory

I don't know – maybe this is normal on first boot?  I only have the 4 files on my SD

Also – during the 'Choose mirror of the Debian archive' part it asks to enter info manually – if I change the location it gives me an error, if I go with the defaults of ftp.gnuab.org and /debian I get an error during the 'Download Installer Components' part – “No kernel modules were found.”?  If I choose to ignore that and continue without installing the kernel modules I get to the partitioning and get stuck in the loop!

Otherwise – this installer really looks great!  Can't wait for an update – keep up the great work cortez!

I tried this on my 3100 - and I get the following error;

/tmp/update/updater.sh: 1: Syntax error: ")" expected
error (1)
Rebooting

My Z is currently running Debian OABI - as per ZDevil's guide Q15, and I have updated the kernel to the Pokylinux 2.6.21 kernel.  My microdrive (6 gig) is partitioned with ~ 5.5 gig root, 512 swap. Used a 1 gig SD to flash - have used it many times for PDAXii13 flashing with no problems.

Syntax error?!? That's really strange. I suppose you just renamed the updater.sh.gz file to updater.sh?
I just checked on my 3100, and it works as expected. Anyone having the same problems?

Ummm - your instructions say to rename the files - but I hat to extract the updater.sh.qz - not just simply rename it, that allowed the updater to work, but still errors. So I extracted both the zaurus_specific.deb.gz and zImage.bin.gz - and got further - but still get an error mounting some tmp dir near the end of the flashing, and after reboot I get a kernel panic.

did I miss something in the instructions?  what files need to be extracted, and which ones renamed?

Extraction of individual files should really not be needed!! I don't know why, but maybe your browser is doing something stupid with the files. I've attached an all-in-one archive for you to try. This time only extract the .tar file, after that transfer the files to SD and try again. Please let me know if this works.

It works now!  Thanks - must have been a corrupted file.  I am going through the installer now - will report back later.

I am having a problem installing the PDAXrom.  On the first part where I choose 4. update and then choose my sd card and choose "yes".  It goes into some sort of bootloader.  It says files are missing and continue to boot the current cacko rom installed.  I have the one file zipped in the archive at the root of the SD card.  What am i doing wrong.

Simplyy unzip the archive. Your SD (or CF) card should have the 4 files updater.sh, tools.tar, initrd.bin and hdimage1.tgz. Best of luck!

the file i am downloading has one file inside a tar.  I am not sure how to unzip it.

try winrar - it should extract the tar, and then unzip the zip file

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Ipkg Dependancies

I downloaded the appropriate files from the feed and put them on my SD card.  The GUI package manager finds the ipk files and lets me install the packages that way.

The commandline is less helpful for me.

No I do not have networking set up yet.  I wanted to keep things simple for now, but perhaps I should investigate networking over USB.  =)

If you install via local directory the depends will not be automatically installed. - you will have to install all depends manually.

If you install via the network from a proper feed the depends will be automatically installed - as long as they are available in the configured feeds.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Swap On Hdd With Beta 4?

I now just hope, that beta 5 will come soon, as I would love to be able to properly suspend, use the character "a" after leaving X and more...
GadgetGuy - to get the 'a' working after exiting x you need to delete (or rename) the "/etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernel.map" file.  There is a bug with the Input Setup applet that causes this to happen - any changes in this will cause the "a" to stop working.

There may be a better way to fix this - check the following two links;

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18112

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17050

I discovered this while trying to figure out how to get the "alt-tap" right mouse button funtion to work - never did figure that one out.  I have switched back to Cacko until I can get a fix for this, and bvvd, and the resume from suspend problem...otherwise I think it is a great ROM - also waiting eagerly for beta 5

BTW - I found that the most recent beta 4 initialized my swap partition automatically without making any changes at all - but then I had already done a mkswap on it?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom 1.1.0beta 4 - Bugfixes And Feed
« on: May 18, 2006, 08:43:17 am »
There are two main problems I am having with using the latest beta - I am hoping someone can help me with these so that I can continue to use it   I have a 3100.

- I can not get the right click with stylus to work (works fine with mouse of course).  In the Input settings applet the default for right click is 'Fn' - but that does not work.  I have tried the other options with no luck, except tap and hold for right click - but after the first tap and hold every tap is then a right click!

- after exiting X I can not type the letter 'a' - so I can not restart X - my only option is to type reboot, pull the battery out, or press reset.  All other keys seem to work after exiting x - except A?

The only other problem I was having was the menu being cut off - but it looks like there is a fix on the way for that

thanks for the great work on this amazing rom!

you could try to translate this page:

I tried this last week when I first saw the post - was able to connect Z to BT headset (omiz) - and heard half second bursts of the music with 10-15 second gaps in between - not very useable, but it almost worked

I have been using KA/PI and KO/PI since I got my Z.  Works OK, has a lot of functionality - but sometimes a little too much for what I need.  Laur - how do you like the apps from theKompany?  Do they run quicker than KA/PI and KO/PI?  Do they work well in landscape mode?

One big problem I have noticed with KO/PI is that if I set an alarm for an event or to-do, and then reboot the Z - the alarm does not work!  Does this happen with the theKompany apps?

Cresho - you mention using the sudo package, and meanies site says not to use the sudo package on Cacko - what do us Cacko ROM users do, is sudo not necessary with the Cacko ROM?
