Gemini PDA - General Discussion / 2022: Supported OSs on Gemini
« on: July 30, 2022, 10:13:57 am »
2022:

* Gemian Linux: updates are broken
* Android: old, old. version (is it safe to use in 2022?)
* Sailfish: seems to *still* be available and updated, but not available in the US?

That’s a bummer, as the Gemini PDA is still being sold and advertised as Linux installable:

(At 400 pounds in 2022 no less)

geminifrench - this guide is AMAZING! You've helped breathe new life into my Gemini PDA. I remember when installing Linux was painful. and this was a comparative breeze. And. so glad to have an OS that is still getting security updates.

Thank you for sharing this!

I realize it's three years later, but I got natural scrolling to work by adding these configurations:

Code: [Select]
        Option "ScrollDownButton"       "4"
        Option "ScrollUpButton"         "5"
        Option "ScrollLeftButton"       "7"
        Option "ScrollRightButton"      "6"

... as noted here:

a back lit keyboard

I agree, sort of, but I think the screen is so close to the keyboard that it might not be needed.

Sadly,  the angle of the screen is such that it is still hard to see the keys  in the  dark.  I've cursed my Gemini while trying to  check few messages in bed. (Okay,  I should  be turning of my electronics at night, I know).  A backlit keyboard on V2 would be very welcome.

Gemini PDA - Android / Putty or other SSH client

Yep, I've been doing SSH (well, technically MOSH) through both Termux and JuiceSSH.  Both great options.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / Using usb-c to connect to monitor

I'm told that while there's no quick charge through the hub, it will charge slowly via a normal USB charger through the hub. I haven't tested this (39xx), but am hoping it is so, because this would allow me to proceed.

Same here.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / display orientation

Are there people out there with working display rotation? Not that I really intend to run the device much in portrait mode, but I do wonder about the sensor setup.

I do know that the compass is disabled in the firmware because Planet Computers did not get the compensation for the lid magnets working (I still would like to see if one can re-enable it, though, as you should be able to compensate for any static magnetic field, however complex the field lines flow), but it looks to me that people do have display rotation possibly working. When looking into SatStat, I see no information for compass (as we know) and also no information for orientation.

But I do see a working accelerometer that nicely indicates the direction of gravity when I am not spinning around the device. Should there be orientation information extracted out of that and is anyone getting screen rotation with the stock Android OS? I did toggle that setting for fixed/rotating display in the drop-down settings back and forth, nothing.

I rotate my Gemini and use portrait display orientation multiple times daily.  The FaceBook app works better in portrait, as do a a few others.   Most  apps rotate on their own, and, for the few that don't, the Gemini includes a force rotate tool.

Yeah, it was really bad at first for me, but reseating it (ensuring that the metal guide is gripped properly) seemed to help.

A big warning should go out to anyone messing with the keyboard: Make sure to lift the keys from the upper (screen-facing) side. Otherwise, the tiny overhang that prevents the keys from falling out can be teared off.

Thanks for the tip - I'll be sure to remove my keys that way. And, after more futzing, my space bar is working better.  Still not flawless, but much improved.

Mind appears fine. I can press it at either side or the middle.
I am envious.  I will keep futzing with mine, holding onto hope.

Has anyone managed to get the space bar to work reliably?  Right now, even after lots of practice, it is only registering about 80-90% of the time, and it gets stuck easily (especially if you press the lower half of the key).

I've very carefully removed and reseated the key many times. (btw extra care is needed, as the space bar is also attached to a tiny metal bar on the left and right sides.  It would be easy to break the plastic prongs on the underside of the key that hold the metal bar.) The central mechanism under the key  works great, as I've tested it with the space bar removed.  Just when the space bar is pressed off center, the key gets stuck or the central mechanism doesn't get all the way pressed down.

And, it's impossible to always hit the space bar in the center as on a small keyboard like this both thumbs are trying to hover over that central spot.

For  the moment, this is the Achilles heel of  my experience with the Gemini, and the main reason I can't work up to anything approaching my regular typing speed.  Thoughts?

Gemini PDA - Android / Gemini fast unlock?

If you use the PIN code, just press the space bar, enter the number, press enter.

(If, like me, your space bar and enter key are faulty, you might mistakenly think this doesn't work!)

Thanks Joe - for me space bar > key code > space bar works (pressing the enter key worked sometimes, not sure why).

A tip someone gave me on FaceBook -- when the enter key doesn't work at login, hit ESC.  That works for me every time, and now I hit ESC either before or  after I  type my password to guarantee enter will work.
