Ubuntu / Running Zubuntu From Internal Memory

ppyo, you are the only one who reported successfully booting Cacko (or Sharp) using cortez's mutliboot kernel (internal flash or SD card) and it's not clear what's the magic. I was asking about the Katastrophe kernel to find out whether it was relevant for the successful boot.

I don't really know if the Katastrophos kernel is vital. I did not try with Cacko's original kernel, as  I was going to use it  as last resort...)
I don't know if it is relevant, but my SD card is a 2GB SD card (not SDHC), and all three partitions are ext2.
I did all the flashing from CF.
Hmpf... what else, what else?...
I can't think of anything else...
Sorry guys. But I'll try to answer all your questions to the best of my (very limited) ability.
Cheers!

Hi ppyo,

your configuration is very near to my preferred setup i wish to have for my first trial of zubuntu.
I would like to have a save boot option if SD fails, so optimum is cacko totally bootable without SD.
Why - in the past SD card have failed in my zaurus - if they would again the Z would be useless until i have a new SD containing the needed partitions.
I don't understand why you still need a SD partition for cacko - you write you are booting cacko from internal flash?

Is the safe SD less boot still possible with your setup?

Debian / [new] Kernel 2.6.24.4 With Cpufreq

Dear 2or0, I would like to ask you for a vmlinux version of your kernel.

I am testing a kexec backport for linux arm 2.4, hoping to make it work on the sharp rom.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work with bz kernel images, only with uncompressed images.

So could I ask for a vmlinux version of your latest kernel? (sharp bootloader, hda1 version)

Thank you in advance!

Here is vmlinux for kernel 2.6.24.3. Good luck!
 [ Invalid Attachment ]

would a SD version of this kernel work on my cacko 1.23 C1000?
Or would i need an other2.4.20 kernel for cacko in NAND too?

As far as i understand the discussion here, the 2.4.x sharp/cacko Cxxxx could kexec a vmlinux kernel on an SD which also has a root fs.

So a debian EABI started from SD by a running cacko might become an option soon?

Debian / A Clean, Fresh, Configured Eabi Rootfs Tarball
« on: March 21, 2008, 01:13:10 pm »
regarding the updated install desription - i'm still in the cacko 1.23 "user group" but very eager to try debian.

i don't understand:

Quote
-- added yonggun kernel modules: 2.6.22.9, 2.6.23.1, 2.6.23.3 (so users just need to flash the kernel)
....
I. Get the latest yonggun kernel here: http://yonggun.tistory.com/66

how these two fit together, because the newest kernel is a 2.6.24 kernel whose modules are not included.

Do i understand something wong?

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Zaurus Oscilloscope
« on: August 25, 2007, 07:42:59 am »
Sounds great,

i might get one of these scopes too. My Z is runnin g Cacko 1.23 now so your hostsw should run now. But i am planning to switch to pdaXii13. Qt apps do run there too, i am not shure whether or not.

The DSO is described as USB Host powered, so does it run direct from the 100mA the Z can supply or does it need more mAmps?  So it needs a powered USB hub?

I had no problems at all with their 1GB card bought about a year ago.

New products and alternatives / Nokia E61 = Light Zaurus
« on: February 06, 2007, 04:30:06 pm »
Quote
Hi,

I've been lately using my new Nokia E61 very extensively, even replacing the zaurus as more convenient for many occasions.

Pros:
Great connectivity: gsm, 3G, wifi, bluetooth
Integrated useful apps: VoIP, email (pop & imap)
Interesting 3rd party apps: ssh client (v2 with dsa private key), vnc viewer (not tested)
Can be programmed: python shell, free c++ environment
Great usability: qwerty keyboard with back lit sensor, big screen
Web browsing: integrated web browser (upgrade to latest fw required) runs much faster that firefox on OZ and renders nicely, and is javascript ajax capable ! (it's based on konqueror's rendering and javascript engines, like safari)
Smaller that zaurus
Accepts mini-sd card
It's a phone!

Cons:
It's not a zaurus
Wifi range could be better
Connectivity configuration menus could be greatly improved
No touchscreen? (I don't think that's a con per-se, but ...)

....

i own an E61 since November i like many of its features, since a few days i have a 2GB mini SD installed and a german Mobipocket Wikipedia on it.  Quite useful.
It syncs great with my Apple Powerbook (not native, had to install a plugin).
Opera 8.65 is availbale for it too.
I do miss the VGA display of the Zaurus and RDP/ICA and yes wired ethernet (i use a Symbol CF on my Zaurus)

Sharp ROMs / Vim And .vimrc
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:51:56 am »

I'm curently usinig OZ, not Cacko, but I downloaded the latest vim from the ZUG's Cacko feed (6.3, not sure where you got yours). There's a sample vimrc in the file /usr/share/vim/vim63/vimrc_example.vim, so I'd imagine there should be the same file in the verision directory of your package. Copy this file to ~/.vimrc & you should be good to go (other than what's below).

I noticed that this file (in 6.3) has a special check to turn syntax highlighting on only if you have a color terminal, but I'm not sure if the terminal in cancko supports that. Give it a try (there's a lot more than just syntax'ing in there), but if it doesn't work (or if you don't have a vimrc sample in your share directory), you can just create a ~/.virmc file yourself and enter whatever settings you want. Here's a few that I use to get you started:

Code: [Select]
syntax on
set hlsearch
set autoindent
set ruler
set ignorecase
set smartcase
set backspace=2
set laststatus=2

To find out what each setting does, just enter the command ':help command' (for example, ':help ruler') to get a description of it.

HAPPY VIM'ING!

Hi,

i'm looking for vim 7.0 for SharpRom/Cacko 1.23, could not find it anywhere.  Consolemode only would be fine.
Does anyone know whether it is available?

If not vailable as binary, is it difficult to compile?

« on: October 30, 2006, 05:55:50 am »
Hi,

today i read the Softmaker Newsletter about an upcoming beta for Office 2006 for ZAURUS - last but not least platform for their 2006 Office line:

in short they will announce in a few weeks the start of beta for ZAURUS and CE.

Hitachi Flora-ie MX1 - 6000sl 'clone' has bluetooth and wifi for geeky bedtime surfing.

Yup its japanese WM2003se- but with the right front end GSFinder you'd never know.

Runs Opera ( licence not provided), TCPMP and Acrobat (use ForceHires to view tiny fonts). Its even got some client/server browsing stuff built in(?)

I've had 2 Zeds and for everday stuff I'm affaid the Flora wins- its great for watching movies, reading pdf, and talking book whilst on holiday.

Before anybody asks - I've never managed to get a ROM dump for dual booting.

It's in great condition, and will come with a UK powersupply and a USB dongle.

£120 inc p&p - or offers there abouts.

[can take paypal]
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

what about the build in apps (PIM etc.) aren't they all Japanese too?

Do i remember right that WM2003 still had the problem of reconfigure/reinstall or restore all if battery runs empty?  This was first solved with WM5?

The Opera  version which runs is: Opera 8.0 for Windows Mobile, Smartphone (WM 2003)?
[a href=\"http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobile/]http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobile/[/url]

A short german descrition of the Flora can be found here: http://www.pocketpc-salzburg.at/modules.ph...e=print&sid=590

Does WPA encryption work on the WLAN?

Thanks

C1000/3x00 General discussions / F1-f10 Function Keys For Console Apps?
« on: October 08, 2006, 06:03:40 pm »
Simple solution for idnight commander mc:

use the cancel button followed by number 1 to 0 this gives F1 to F10.

This works generally similar on mc under Linux, on a normal PC it would be ESC followed by 1 to 0.

I have no idea whether other console apps work similar.  Could be something to try out before trying to mangle it thru keyhelper.

Most of the scripts for converting Wikipedia are in Perl, which however, I consider a write-only scripting language (no way to understands somebody's else code). Some people write quite complex conversion scripts in Python or XSLT. For simple conversion tasks, I prefer awk. Certainly there are a lot of choices, especially if you work under Linux.

Hi rafm,

do you think there might be an option to get a zbedic wikipedia by development by donation as described on the zbedic sourceforge bedic webpage [a href=\"http://bedic.sourceforge.net/fddd.html]http://bedic.sourceforge.net/fddd.html[/url]?  I would donate for that.  This way would be faster than me learning new scripting languages.

General Discussion / Seitz 160mpixel Digital Camera

Is that a Zaurus attached to the camera ?

I heard about that ridiculous 160 Megapixed digital camera
http://slashdot.org/articles/06/09/25/1346231.shtml

and never bothered to look it up - just another of those just-because-we-can-do-it department products with no real common-user(read "me")  advantage to it.

But what's a Zaurus doing out there with that ridiculous camera ?

Note : I think this panoramic camera is different from the 160 megapixel "rid-duh-culous" camera.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=142274\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

way down in the specs is written:

Control device        Sharp Zaurus or other handheld PDA devices; connected to camera via WLAN

looks like Zaurus is just one option ...

iamasmith, this is an impressive description and a smart way of making wikipedia running as static web pages. But I still would regard browsing wikipedia in zbedic more convenient than installing apache, squashfs2 and running a web browser.

I wonder if anyone would like to invest time in wring a script that would convert wikipedia dumps to the zbedic format. zbedic offers only simplified HTML syntax, but consumes also less memory than a web browser. The script should:
* separate articles, extract a key-word for each article
* optionally truncate / remove large articles to reduce the total size
* change HTML links to zbedic links
* optionally simplify HTML (e.g. tables shown on the right which are usually too big and overlap text)

I can help with the zbedic syntax and generating the final dictionary, but I don't have time to help with the script.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140712\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I would if i were able to program in any script language.  They only programming language i know is business basic, maybe it could be done with it, but would be not of much use.  What script language are you thinking about?
