Gemini PDA - Android / Yalp no longer working for me
« on: November 28, 2019, 03:54:58 pm »
Yalp is dead, now Aurora is also not working even with google accounts, as google did some "improvements" https://gitlab.com/AuroraOSS/AuroraStore/issues/217
Hopefully this is fixed but how long it will last? Are there any other aproaches to get the play store apps on the Gemini without google play?

Gemini PDA - Android / Degoogling Gemini PDA

Is all the knowhow in the pictures? I am not able to make them bigger? What are all those apps that need to be removed, and what are the good replacements?

Chova se gemini stejne i po akualizaci na A8?

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Oreo on its way

If they release in the next 20 hours, it'll still be less than 3 weeks…

Planet are a very small company, and I'm inclined to cut them a little slack.  The Gemini itself was a few months later than we hoped, but it did arrive, and with pretty much the hoped-for spec (slightly better in some ways, not quite as good in others).  From the vantage point of a year later, that delay isn't important; the device itself is.  I gather that people who've had to contact them directly about e.g. broken machines have mostly been happy with the ultimate results.  They promised a way to flash various operating systems, and they did so.  (It may not be as easy to use as we'd like, but it's probably a darn sight better support than for most Android phones.)  And so on.

As far as I can tell, Planet have been working in good faith all along, and so I'm happy to forgive them a little optimism on timescales.

By the way: does anyone know what the effects of upgrading from Android 7.1.1 to 8.1 might be?  Will any of my apps stop working?  Will I have to set up all my settings again, or my launcher, &c?  Will it still be rooted?  And are there any new features to look forward to?

I am not that sure I want A8.1 on Gemini, as on the other device I have the behaviour of 8.1 is a hell, this version of Android completely changes the notification API, many apps stops working notification including K-mail (well interested in airmail which is modified k-mail), there is very agressive power management, that is still killing any background app, you have to manually select apps that may live in the background, there is no way to set "disable wifi during sleep" as android wants wifi still on to track you etc. In the first place I'd like to know how the Gemini deals with those andriod oreo features.

Hardware News / Planet Computers announces the Cosmo Communicator
« on: November 07, 2018, 10:07:50 am »
The hinge seems to be even smaller on cosmo compared to gemini, the device will be bulkier and heavier on display side - as this seems more like a gemni with added display, I doubt this is going to be any better with wobling. Also it does not solve the problem with fixed display angle and with czech layout (maybe other layouts too)  - there is no improvement to be able to type  caron and similar things because so called dead key is missing completely and we are not able to type certain letters.

Yeah, I set the fixed IP addresses up in my router, too.

I have never found a way (either on Gemini or in last 2 years my Samsung tablet) - like gidds I get my router to assign a "fixed" IP based on the MAC address of the Gemini.

For WiFi,
Settings -> WiFi -> Long press on your SSID -> Modify Network -> Advance options -> scroll to IP settings -> Static -> set it up.

This is for Gemini-7.1-Planet-12062018-v2, stock, no root.

Not someplace to test hardwire setup, but I would expect it to be similar...

d

Nope, there is nothing like that for ethernet.

I need to be able to set the IP manually to configure the device that have nothing that fixed IP address. It is possible to set the IP with "ip" command in terminal, however this is still broken, probably due to sandboxing.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / MediaTek System On Chip - mtklogger malware

Ran across a blog post on Medium that referenced MediaTek's SoC and what he describes as a "keylogger" mtklogger as part of the package.

Reference - https://medium.com/@chpapa/review-after-two...ne-7dd8b550609a

If this is accurate, how exactly do we trust this in its default state as Gemini PDA's are shipped, and how do you remove/fix this?

If this is not the proper forum, I apologize, thought hardware may be the best area.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.
It's not a keylogger, but in some respects it is just as bad, collecting a lot of information and if not phoning home with it at least leaving it exposed. Here's what NIST has to say:

https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2016-10135

Here you can find how to check and set off the mtklogger:

What other advantages does Nova have over Launcher3, if any?  And how different is it to set up and use?

I tried Nova Launcher too - it is much better configurable, you may e.g. remove the google seach bar that is ocuppiing a lot of space on the home screen, you may resize widgets much better etc. Just after configuring all the widgets I found that the device is having much higher power consumption (3-5% a day instead 1-2%). I am not sure this is due to nova launcher or widgets or something else.

I am now sure, the Nova launcher is really causing much bigger consumption than the original launcher 3. As standby is important to me, I can not use Nova even thou it allows better configurability of home screen.

Trochu to tu umřelo, na Pavla jsem telefon přečetl až teď ... Takže sice se srpna bude listopad, ale jinak OK.

Nějaké zdroje ke gemini v češtině:

http://www.abclinuxu.cz/blog/jirka/2018/7/...-prvni-aplikace
http://www.abclinuxu.cz/blog/jirka/2018/8/...nchronizace-dat

Pokud chcete a nemůžete v daném čase, pište to sem taky.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Gemini PDA Gen 2 Features Request

I suspect a backlit keyboard won't be viable.

Right now, all keyboards start off with the same set of blank keys, and then the labels are ‘etched’ with a laser (causing the plastic to lighten and expand slightly).  All keyboard layouts can be etched with the same machine; it's very quick.

However, if the keyboard were backlit, each key would have to be moulded from two types of plastic (the opaque dark grey, and a translucent white), customised for the particular label.  I suspect this couldn't be done in-house, but would need each keyboard variant to be carefully designed, ordered in, and stored.

Having different keyboard layouts probably complicates Planet's logistics enough already: the number of models they have to deal with is at least twice the number of keyboard layouts (one for Wifi-only and one for 4G variants — and more due to the different mains adapters).  But ordering in keys with labels would probably complicate it an awful lot more.  This is feasible for a company with the size (and margins) of Apple or Dell, but for Planet I fear it may not be.

And all that's before you consider the difficulties of piping light (whether through fibres or air) through the rubber membrane, the extra battery drain…

But don't get too downcast.  I've been using that keyboard in bed almost every night for 20 years (first on a Psion 5/5mx, and now on a Gemini), and I've hardly ever had any trouble hitting the right keys.  (There aren't quite as many as on a full-size computer keyboard, for one thing; and I find my thumbs learned very quickly where to go.)  So I don't think the lack of a backlight justifies that much concern, really.

For me, things like allowing earphone buttons to work with the lid closed, getting the built-in speakers to work in-phase and in stereo, fixing the wobbly keys, ensuring the hinge is strong enough, and adding rubber feet are much more important.

For years the thinkpads use a "neat" trick - the led in the display that lits the keyboard from top - just one diod properly placed can do that. In times I used jornada, I helped myself by tilting display slightly towards the keyboard and there was enought light to see a keyboard symbols. With Gemini this is hardly possible, as the display has only one position and it would not hold half way open., so the keyboard remains dark, which I also somethimes see as a problem.

Gemini PDA - Android / Youtube

After the new firmware, the sound is much better and I can finally use Youtube. However.... The videos all play in fullscreen mode and I cannot scroll down to the comments while a video is playing. Is there any trick that can do the job?

Thanks in advance!

Have the same with Youtube App, if you leave fullscreen then it auto rotates to portrait mode, in browser this works fine however.

Gemini PDA - Hardware / speakers out of phase?

cool! does it flip the phase only on speaker?

Yes, it peeks into the accessory state and only fixes the phase when no headset is attached.
Don't know if it could be any help (and I must admit I haven't figured out how to configure it either, don't really use the speakers on the Gemini a lot...), but apparently Neutron (a music player) has a gotten a setting for phase switching...

So could be possible to get the music to play "correctly"? But you would have to change it every time going from headphones to speaker-mode... (and vice-versa).

I am new to gemini having a unit build cca 05/2018 with latest android and the sound is for sure stereo - tested with some stereo test videos on youtube. Not sure about the phase.
