Why does unlocking the front screen not unlock the main screen?

I'm not sure about all the other points, but it *does* work like this at least for me. Actually, one of the problems that I have is that occasionally Codi locks but the main screen does not. But anyway, unlocking CoDi *does* unlock the main display too.

Also, I have to say that if you skip the brown paperbag releases of V20/V21, I've gotten better behavior from V22/V23 than with V19.

I use a swipe pattern. Unlocking the front screen does not unlock the main screen (or at least, I can't figure out how to enable that functionality). For me, V23 has made my phone worse. It was fairly stable until I installed v23. That's when the daily reboots started.

If referring to my particular Cosmo, it has never been bent in any situation, nor dropped, knocked, sat on, or even kept in a tight pocket (when carrying it, I keep it in my shirt pocket, inside the Gemini slipcase - as my Cosmo slipcase still hasn't arrived).

IMO, you will be sorely disappointed by the quality and usefulness of the slipcase. In my case, relying on the slipcase caused more damage than it prevented. Once you've slid the phone in and out a few times, the case no longer grips the phone very well. In my case, I pulled the phone (in its case) out of my pocket. Case was upside down in my pocket for some reason. As the case came out of my pocket, the phone slid out and hit the driveway. Now the two back corners are damaged on either side of the hinge.

Personally, I think the case is worthless - a waste of money and yet another layer making the phone awkward to use while on the go.

As far as the phone itself goes, the two biggest issues with using it as a daily driver are the randomness of the front screen turning things on or off and making calls at random while in my pocket. Yes, you can screen lock it but that makes using the phone even more awkward as you are now unlocking it on the front screen (with its terrible responsiveness) AND the main screen if you have to use it. Why does unlocking the front screen not unlock the main screen?

The second usability issue has been that with each update since v19, the phone becomes more and more unstable. I now have regular multiple reboots per day, alarms don't go off and the phone sometimes doesn't ring when a call comes in. And with each reboot, I have to go into settings and turn the keyboard backlight on which now also sometimes doesn't turn on even after you set it to turn the backlight on (if you go back into the Cosmo settings the backlight magically comes on without touching the slider as if it suddenly remembers, "Oh yeah, I'm supposed to have the backlight on aren't I? Thanks for reminding me!"

The Cover Display and the main phone also seem to be very poorly integrated. It is obvious when you use the CODI that it is its own computer and that it doesn't really want to talk to the main phone. You essentially get two computers to deal with (and update) on one phone that don't really seem to like each other very much. That makes for great seemless usability.

And then there's Ledison. Why it is even installed on the Cosmo baffles me. It does nothing and yet there's even a setting in the Cosmo settings for it. Go ahead, turn it on and watch it do nothing.

After six months of using the Cosmo, I've also cooled toward the keyboard which was originally the big draw for me. Some keys seem to be unresponsive and others too responsive producing multiple presses. It's like there is one perfect tap at one perfect force that makes the key work correctly and if you fall outside of that parameter, who knows what you'll get. At this point, it's not much better than an on-screen keyboard for all the typos that need to be corrected.

Have they removed the update, or do they roll out updates gradually? It's not coming up for me. I'm on Cosmo-9.0-Planet-01182020-V19

They might have pulled it. There is a new update on Indiegogo stating there are problems with the update and that they are working on a hotfix patch. They are also recommending that people do not install the update at this time.

Android update available today, took the very dangerous path of simply installing it.

Went ahead with no fuss, Build number reports Cosmo-9.0-03262020-V20

So far so good?

Initial experiences:

"Improved screen rotation function plus soft keyboard availability when Cosmo screen is used in portrait mode;" This is a nope for me. Rotation doesn't seem to work and the soft-keyboard popping up in portrait mode doesn't work either."
"Notes app: dictation feature can now be controlled via Cover Display;" This does not work at all for me. Dictation from the Cover Display microphone has horrible soud quality. Appears to have no interaction whatsoever with Notes app.
The Data app now has the name: change end date. This can be manually changed back to Data.
The lock screen when you open the clamshell now shows only the time whereas before, below the time it would show the date and next alarm. <<<< UPDATE: This is most definitely a bug. If you slide the screen up and down a few times without unlocking it, the date and next alarm time show up again. The problem happens each time you open the Cosmo.

More of the same:
Ledison still does nothing useful

One positive: The App Bar now shows 12 hour time. Before it only showed 24hr format even if your main time setting was 12hr.

Didn't you forget to turn Use LEDison patterns on cover display option in Cosmo Settings on to make LEDison patterns work?

Not sure if you're referring to me but yes, the option was/is turned on in settings. LEDison does nothing on the Cosmo, at least for now.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Google Search Bar

As far as I know, the only way of doing this is using a different launcher. I'm using Nova launcher, which has a free and a paid version. This comes with a lot of nifty extras as well. Recommended

+1 For Nova Launcher

I also installed it initially just to get rid of the Google Search bar. As it turned out though, a nice side benefit is that it's a really nice piece of software and has made my Cosmo's home screen much more appealing and useful.

I messed around with Ledison as well but never got anything working. Seems odd that they would include the program if they were thinking there was no use for it on the Cosmo.

I was personally hoping it would put up some fake LEDs on the OLED outer screen. I have a harder time seeing the little notification dot at the bottom and discerning which app the notification is for. A quick "morse code" of dots for different notifications would have been fun (and maybe even useful!)

Spent a couple hours wasting time with AT&T support on Friday. Got the "we'll call you back" (which they didn't) brush off so I went to the AT&T store for help. The guys there were sympathetic and did what they could but they had no luck restoring my service even after telling their system the Cosmo was a Samsung Note 10.

So, on Saturday I went to T-Mobile and got a prepaid plan just to test out the signal strength around my house which, the last time I tested it a few years ago was near zero. The guy at the store put in a SIM and their system recognized my phone with no problems. He mentioned that if signal was still an issue around my property that they would provide a free signal booster. I took the phone home to test the signal and fortuitously, signal strength in my house was quite good (actually about one bar better than AT&T). I went back to the T-Mobile store today and ported over my number. I don't think I was there for more than five minutes. In all, probably not more than twenty minutes with both visits combined. They couldn't have made it easier.

I never had trouble with AT&T's service until this phone issue. It's too bad they weren't really interested in or able to connect me to the people in the company that could provide a resolution.

That's too bad.....but glad you have service now.

All the AT&T guys needed to do was change setting to be same as iPhone. Don't know why they couldn't do that for you, it was easy for AT&T guy at my store.....Oh well.

Again, glad you have service now.

I told told him about the iPhone trick. He was walking from phone to phone on the display models to find an IMEI to use (I guess) and for whatever reason, landed on a Note 10. He did go through the iPhones but I think he figured he'd have better luck with another Android phone. I didn't want to press him on it because he was nice enough not to just brush me off. At that point I was already committed in my mind to trying T-Mobile.

The only bad thing for my situation is that a few years back T-Mobile had terrible signal strength around my house. I might try buying a pre-paid SIM from them and seeing if things have improved.

TMo has definately had a rocky history with signal strength, at least compared to
verizon in most places...    But it seems like they keep adding new signal and
new "low frequency" support that's supposed to help things...

So far, things have been going better with my Cosmo then reception was with
my Gem.

Good luck,

Hi VAMM,

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I not gotten booted off...

My AT&T guy, entered info as if it's an iPhone....don't know if that would make a difference.

My guy said if I did get booted off, to come back to store and he'd re-do it...he thought that would take care of it.

So, have store try it again and see what happens....

Good luck,

Mark

So, I came home from work and confirmed that I've been de-provisioned down to no data and 3G cellular which at my home means almost no signal. What a PITA.

Sorry to hear.....

Think it would be worth having AT&T change it to be like one of the new iPhones.

Have had no problems with Cosmo for over two months this way.

So, definitely worth a try.

I'll have to give it a try I guess but I just know it's going to be an ordeal.

UPDATE: It appears that T-Mobile at least recognizes the Cosmo's IMEI:

Good news!

You should have a great experience using your own phone with T-Mobile—it has features that typically perform well on our network.

IMEI: ################

The only bad thing for my situation is that a few years back T-Mobile had terrible signal strength around my house. I might try buying a pre-paid SIM from them and seeing if things have improved.

Hang on, how does roaming work?  I assume they do actually support foreign users?

Good question. I don't know for sure. Either you get a reduced level of service like 3G only or, if your phone happens to be a supported model, you get lucky with full service. This is just my theory though.

This seems monumentally stupid to me.  The whole *point* of the SIM card -- the Subscriber Identity Module, after all -- was to enable users to pick networks and handsets independently.  You're saying that you can't (reliably) do that in the US?

It is indeed monumentally stupid. It appears that the only way to get the phone to work right on AT&Ts network is to fool the system into thinking it is a different phone. If you just give them the Cosmo's IMEI, they will say the phone is incompatible. The first time around, the person at the store was very helpful and stuck with it until he got it working but I was there at least two hours and even he was getting frustrated with AT&T's tech support. He had warned me after he got it working that AT&T may boot the phone off (actually, they just reduce the provisioning level down to uselessness).

Thanks for the response. I'm starting to suspect (and am hopeful) that the issue is just the tower near my house.

However, if it is more than that, I'll give the iPhone trick a try if someone at the store knows how to do it.

Cricket Cellular's system says the phone is compatible and AFAIK, ironically, Cricket is owned by AT&T. If I continue to have trouble, I may try getting a Cricket SIM to see how that goes.

UPDATE

Just returned from trip to local AT&T store....

Guy at this store was great and very helpful.

Turns out issue is not about the SIM card.....it's all about the IMEI number used.

Unfortunately, since PC does not have AT&T sell their phones, they don't have an IMEI number that identifies the device as a Cosmo. Therefore, the system doesn't know to provide it with 4G and mobile data.

After trying all the possible APN's available and not getting 4G, he entered an IMEI from an iPhone and Voila! the Cosmo got 4G and mobile data instantly.

So, for those of you that got your Cosmo's working without all the headaches I went through, the AT&T guy said there were two options.

One, you transferred an existing SIM card from a phone that is recognized in AT&T system / IMEI.

Or if you went to AT&T store and got new SIM, the person helping you did what my guy did and didn't tell you.

AT&T guy said that I need to see if it still shows 4G after about 36 hours from now, as he said their system does a periodic sweep of devices on system. He thought there might be a small chance that system might detect that IMEI is for iPhone while device is not an iPhone. If that happens, it would likely downgrade Cosmo back to 3G. And if that happens, he said to come back to store or call AT&T to reset it again.

So it goes......but at least I now have 4G and mobile data......

Thanks to all who helped. Really made a big difference!

The guy at my local AT&T store did the same for my Cosmo but he registered the SIM with a Samsung Note 8. It worked great until today when AT&T's system did a sweep and booted my phone off. I can't be going through this game every month. Not sure what to do now.

UPDATE:
So over lunch I walked around downtown and it seems I have VoLTE and 4G there so it may be that there is something wrong with the tower near my home. The odd thing is that it drops down to 3G near my office which it didn't do before today either. In my account, it also says "Unknown Unknown" for the device which is what it said when I had trouble getting it on AT&T's system when I first got the phone. I guess I'll see what happens tonight when I get home from work. Hopefully it is a problem with just the tower near my home and the rest is just coincidental.
