Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Re: Camera
« on: September 23, 2021, 01:35:03 pm »
I figured it out. For some reason the app I was browsing my file system with was the cause. I used the one bundled with the Cosmo and it worked straight away.

And what a difference this app does to the device camera! It actually goes from being useless to becoming usable and quite okay actually!

How do you install this? I get a message saying "app cannot be installed" when i try to open the Apk file. I read that you have to uninstall the old gcam app first, but I've not installed that. Do i have to uninstall the included stock camera app too somehow?

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Re: Keyboard "typing quality"

The "multiple keypresses" issue is called ghosting, and it's an issue on the Gemini too. An user has made an Android image with a fix for this issue, it would be nice if an image with the fix could be made for the Cosmo as well:

Varti

Good to know that it can be fixed through software though. Crossing my fingers that something like this will come for the cosmo as well !

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Re: Keyboard Bounces
« on: November 30, 2020, 06:42:02 pm »
If by bounce you mean self repeating keystrokes , then i have that one too

That's hardware issue. Try to put on and off charger to the right USB, works for me

So you mean by simply plugging in the charger to the right side USB-C port fixes this ?

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Keyboard "typing quality"
« on: November 30, 2020, 06:35:29 pm »
I got my Cosmo a while ago and use it quite often actually (but not as my main phone). However the keyboard is a bit wierd. The tactile feedback and key placement is actually really really good. I believe at this size it cannot get any better really. However, i have some oddities which happens a bit too often, and would like to hear if its a general issue or if its just my unit. When i type i often either find a key press not registering at all, while I'm sure i pressed the key, OR registering two times or sometimes even three times. If it wasn't for this issue I would be almost as fast on this device to type as on my regular main PC, and i think its a real shame. They keyboard feels surprisingly good to type on though. Others with this issue?

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Wifi issues
« on: July 21, 2020, 11:16:23 am »
Hi everyone.

I've read about this  by someone elsse. but first begun experiencing this my self today.

My Wifi seems to stop working at random times. It will tell me that I'm connected and show the wifi icon with signal strengh, but i just wont be able to connect to anything as if i had no wifi connection.

I'm running V23. Is this a commonly known problem, and is there a fix to it ?

Fn-Shift-N and Fn-Shift-B are keyboard shortcuts to increase/decrease keyboard backlight. Accidentally, these keys are also used for adjusting display intensity (with Fn alone), and are marked as such. You can locate N key by touch in the dark due to its right edge aligned with right edge of space key.

Very nice, wasn't aware of that shortcut. Thanks!

Isn't the backlit keyboard supposed to turn itself on is that a manual task? Either way how is it configured ?

Mine doesn't turn on by it self when it gets dark, and the only way i have found to control it is via the cosmo settings option, but it seems rather unintuitive to have to go in there to set it. Should be some easy accessible slider like the backlight control i the notification bar

I've had my Cosmo for around a week now, and can, rather unfortunately, say that i won't be using it as my daily driver / phone. [...]

But its just too inconvinient, having to open the device to get things done. Which is why i think their next device, the Astro is the best possible solution to this type of device. Its the best of both worlds.

If CODI would live to its promise, then you would not even had this topic started. The promise was that you could handle all your urgent phone tasks such as answering phone call or message, playing your music, navigating and all such, from the external screen (CODI), without opening the device.

The reality turned out to be unresponsive slab with the life of its own in your pocket, making calls, switching various setting and abusing fingerprint scanner -- all on its own agenda (and sucking a lot of battery juice at that). Sure we can still hope that manufacturer will fix it. But I would say you can expect just the same from their next model - nice promises. There will be next "Black hole galaxy whatever" after astro, where the next promise will go, and the astro will be just another unfulfilled bastard of crowdfunding...

Sorry for bad mood, covid and all that flows with it, you know...

You are not wrong though. The only reason i didn't back the Gemini back in the day, was becausee i could't imagine how it would be practical in everyday use. The Cosmo said to fix those worries, with Codi, but i have just ended up turning mine off. In practical terms that leaves me with a gemini with a backlit keyboard. A shame really.

But with Astro i do see a potential now that i know how Planet does things. They wont have to worry about software on some obscure proprietary screen because it would all be in the main screen . They also wont have to worry as much about Android having to be in landscape mode.

They do need to work on their software and promises though.

I've had my Cosmo for around a week now, and can, rather unfortunately, say that i won't be using it as my daily driver / phone. Its not that i do not like it. I was actually quite surprised as to how well its been working, and the keyboard is much better than expected.

But its just too inconvinient, having to open the device to get things done. Which is why i think their next device, the Astro is the best possible solution to this type of device. Its the best of both worlds.

I do think i will try to use it as a daily driver at one point though. But i think it feels more like having a small laptop rather than having a phone with a full keyboard, which is also why I'm hesitant to use it as my main phone

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Keys getting stuck
« on: July 09, 2020, 07:39:05 pm »
Sorry for bringing up this old topic, but i just got my cosmo a few days back. I really like the keyboard, but unfortunately i too have some issues with it. My S key is not working properly. I have to tap it dead center for it to register. This key is the one i have the most trouble with, and honestly, I'm reluctant to sending it in to Planet because i fear that, if they replace it, i might get a unit with more problems.

My question is if any of you having trouble have managed to either fix it your self somehow, or has the problems dissapeared with use? And if they have, how bad were they in the beginning?

.. wrote to Planet Computers about it on Facebook, and they tell me that a V23 is being released today. So i will wait for that

v23 is already available. This ota update is 49 MB. V22 ota.zip is 134MB. Maybe this update will work only for v22. ( so maybe you have to update manually to v22 first , I don't know ). Please post here if  v23 is available to you. Good luck.

V23 was available and i made the jump all the way from V19.. Seems to be working though.. Currently updating Codi.. I cannot remember the size of the OS update though

I got my Cosmo yesterday, and it came with V15.. I've updated it to V16, and then went from V16 to V19, but now it tells me that there aren't any more updates available. I've tried to reboot the device, but still nothing. Do i need to do something manually?

- Update to V22 (and CODI to 1.1.1.14)
- Unlock bootloader (doing that will wipe data)
- Root the phone. I've not even tried Planet's own method, magicked boot images from these forums (or rolled by yourself) work fine. I would actually *prefer* to have a locked bootloader and signed images, but since the results have been less than promising at least based on the forums, it's just better to roll your own for now.
- Repartition device if you want to run Linux "natively" with dual-boot. Personally I rather use the approach of running Devuan from memory card, as outlined here - That way you get to use Android kernel with GNU userland without any hardware hassles: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36096

Thanks for the suggestions! Devuan sounds like its the more stable approuch to get Linux abilities on the device, and i think i will go with that!

Regarding rooting.. I've never really needed it on my other Android devices, so do you still think i would need it here ?
