Sharp Zaurus sl-c1000 and sl-c3100

Hi
I have one of each model. Both are in mint, almost as new condition. Both have Cacko Distro on them and still boot and run fine.
Anyone interested in these fascinating clamshell palmtops?
neillcurrie (at) gmail (dot) com gets me fastest, not here, unfortunately.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Battery Charging Problem?
« on: October 23, 2012, 02:25:50 pm »
If the charging circuit has fried, then complete battery replacement sounds like your only option. But if just the cells have expired, then it's usually fairly easy and cheap to replace them.
If it were my device, I would pull the battery carefully apart, replace the cells, and charge it up. For about $10 for two new cells it's an experiment that would be well worth it IMO. If it fails, you can then start sourcing a whole new battery.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Battery Charging Problem?

Often I have had a seemingly dead battery in a laptop or similar. Leaving
it on charge for an extended time, and discharging it a couple of times has often helped that
battery to recover.
Don't despair ;-)

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Battery Charging Problem?

Perhaps something about battery calibration went wrong due to not using netwalker for some time, battery level discharge too much?

Not sure how to recalibrate battery or reset system on this...as I don't have netwalker anymore....

A fairly standard way to recalibrate batteries is to discharge them fully, then charge all the way up to 100% (or as far as it'll go). This recalibrates the charging circuitry essentially, makes no change to the actual battery.
It may need repeating to achieve accuracy.

If the Netwalker won't actually turn on, making discharging the battery fully difficult, I'd remove the battery, then hardwire a small bulb of appropriate voltage in to the terminals to drain it. Then put the battery back into the Netwalker and leave it overnight to charge.

OpenBSD / Openbsd 5.0

Just wanted to let everyone know that OpenBSD still supports the Zaurus. My Zaurii is currently running 5.0 and still going strong. Going to update to 5.1 in May.

Have a great day!

So, has the SD write issue been sorted satisfactorily?
I tried to install OpenBSD a while back, but couldn't get the Package Manager (under Cacko, "heavy") to accept the BSD Feed address and pull down the necessary starting package............any tips/clues welcome.
Thanks

Sharp ROMs / Zaurus Website For Sharp Rom Users

Thanks
Enjoyed reading/skimming through the site, and have bookmarked it.
Am still using a sl-5500 myself, occasionally though.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Rom's Getting Hard To Find?

Years ago I got an excellent deal on Textmaker for the Zaurus. It installed fine, worked well.
A couple of years later, after a system rebuild, I tried to install it again, and it complained of "incorrect characters in the name". Nothing I changed the offending characters to mattered, it simply wouldn't install.
Fast forward another couple of years, and I thought, well, let's try again. No changes, stock install on the exact same (Cacko "heavy") ROM, and it installed perfectly.
Still can't figure that one out ;-)

BTW, differences between the flavors of menaie's ROM's can be found somewhere in these pages:

Yes, that was the auction

I just noticed this sale on EBay...

Granted you'd probably want to put in an offer instead of clicking Buy-It-Now (I mean $499 seems a tad steep, IMHO).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sharp-Zaurus-SL-C1...p-/270758288793

And personally, I ask for an actual picture of the item vs. the stock one being shown (they are listed as used after all).

(Disclaimer: I have no association with the seller... Always do your homework and check a every seller's feedback before buying purchasing anything.)

EDIT: Oops, I should have posted this in "Deals and Great Z Buys" forum... sorry about that.

Sl-C1000's sell for $100 or less on ebay, though they seldom get listed these days. I just missed a "new" sl-c3200, which went for about $84 a couple of weeks ago.
They would have to accept a pretty steep reduction from the BIN price of $499 to make a purchase from that seller worthwhile IMO

I bought a couple and they came 3 days ago.
Plugged one into a SL-5500 running TKrom, and it worked OOTB with no driver installation nor tweaking at all.
Haven't tried it in either of my clamshell zaurii though yet, though I doubt there'll be an issue. If there is, I think the ebay auction mentioned that there was a linux driver on the small driver disk that each came with, so BYU (Bob's Your Uncle ;-)

General Discussion / Larger Sdhc Cards On Sharp Rom

I just installed the SDHC driver on my SL-C1000 and retired SL-C860 and it seems to be working fine. This will really extend the useful life of my Zaurus since it has become impossible to find any of the older SD cards that will work on the Z.

I believe you can still find the "old" SD cards on ebay. I bought a 4gb Transcend x133 speed there.

General Discussion / When A Wifi Card Goes Bad?

I am using a DLink WIFI card and it always worked great.

Lately I started using my Z again and when I put the card in it is recognized but it never connects, it just says "Network offline".

Sometimes I eject and re-insert the card and I get card unsupported (but ussually it recognizes it the first time,  this only happen of Eject/reinsert.

Oddly, on my C3200 it shows some activity in the WIFI monitor app, but while it shows the MAC address of the card for a while, the Mac Address will then suddenly disappear but the activity remains (signal strength/quality strong, but very little IO since it doesn't connect).

Anyway, I am wondering if this indicates that the CF card is dying/dead or if there is some other tests I should try before giving up the ghost on this one?

It may well be possible to reflash the card firmware, it's certainly worth a try.

Sorry, I feel a little guilty: whenever I check in I usually just hit the "View new posts" button, as I feel I have read most of what I want to read in the past.
Still use a site specific search though, from time to time.
Really lament the loss of Zaurus-specific websites, and various feeds/repositories.
