For Sale / Wanted / Sl-c860 + Extras
« on: June 09, 2008, 08:16:09 pm »
Well, unfortunately the time has come where I can no longer devote my time to my beloved Zaurus 860. It's been a good friend over the years, but life is now all-work-no-play and money's tight so I have to let my baby go.

It's an SL-C860 in good condition, plus Ambicom WiFi and a 5GB Microdrive from a Rio Karma. I'm going to miss her dearly, but hopefully one of you can get the satisfaction of owning such a wonderful PDA.

It's up on eBay, here's the listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/Zaurus-SL-C860-WiFi-5G...1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for looking.

Android / Google Android Installable Image Available!
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:42:19 am »
Rotten luck, the altboot bugs pop up on my 860 and prevent proper installation. When rebooting from the SD after extracting android-root.tar.gz, it hangs on the copying /home to the loop-image.

The furthest I got so far was booting the standard image and typing reboot, which goes back to the boot selector thing. Selecting the SD option says something that the card is already mounted, but copying /home works and you get the command line eventually. Typing /start gets Android's gears turning, setting up the binder things, then complains that it can't mount stuff, and ultimately hangs up after saying ***post-zygote, the same error stuff as when I tried running Android under Angstrom from flash.

I really hope I get this working some time, it's just too cool to not be able to mess with!

---

Also, on many of my cards (formatted with gparted to ext3), trying to boot from the SD gives:

Checking file system on /dev/mmcblk0p1
/dev/mmcblk0p1 has gone 35814 days without being checked, check forced

then proceeds to freeze. Fooey

Alright, I'm just having no luck here. I flashed the console image of Angstrom on my 860 and extracted the /home/root/android-root directory from android-root.tar.gz to /home/root/android-root, copied the binder thing to /lib/mod.../drivers, and copied the doit and start files to /home/root. I ran doit and when running start I get:

=============
Starting Android
=============

'/home/root/android-root/dev/binder' exists
*Booting Android
mount: not found
mount: not found

After a few minutes, the screen went blank. I pressed enter and below the last mount it said "*** post-zygote"

Then it seems to freeze and I'm forced to hard reboot. Any pointers as to what I'm doing wrong? Am I just going to have to wait until there's a release for 7x0 devices?

Alright, maybe I'm an idiot, but can someone give me a step-by-step of what I need to type to get the android stuff extracted the right way?

So far, I have a clean install of Angstrom on my C-860 and the android-root.tar.gz on my CF card. What do I do from here?

On further testing, the status bar and options don't show up durning battles in Final Fantasy 8... otherwise running fast and great!

Another great release, Zod!

What I'd like to see is an option for interlacing that instead of drawing a black line, the last line drawn should be duplicated, thereby eliminating the distracting black bars and allowing the image to appear brighter. Depending on how you draw to the screen, I'm sure it can be done with little or no impact on performance.

Keep up the amazing work!

Nope, same effect either way.

Well, one more quick update. The menu (psx4zaurus) seems like it redraws a lot and is really flickery and slow to navigate. Those artifacts I were describing in my last post don't seem to be scaler related (I remember in your older releases you were trying to figure out if you wanted to cut off the ends of the screen or rescale it to fit, it's not the same thing as pixels being dropped... that's still apparent on some screens). It's more like it's grabbing a bitmap from the wrong address... for instance, the dialogue thingies have a white "pipe" surrounding the blue background where the text is displayed. The bottom "pipe" (which should be horizontal) is composed of vertical pipes spaced every few pixels. Also, during the battles, whenever the little finger pointer points at something, the area that is underneath it gets duplicated and drawn on top of the status things. Here's a picture demonstrating both issues:

Again, great job!

I'm using the SDL you provided. I know it's not optimized for the Cxx0 series, but it's damn fast regardless!

I'd say it's certainly quite playable besides the memcard issue. I tried a bit with FF7 also, and there's a bit of glitching at the top of the screen and on the pop-up dialogue thingies and the bottom-third status thing in battles, but the full-3d battle sequences run much, much smoother than they ever have. I'm overclocked to 471MHz (fastest you can get the Cxx0 devices) and using about 40% psx clock. I'm used to having to turn the sound off to get max performance, but it's still quite playable with it turned on. The improvement with interlacing is minimal compared to how it helped in the past.

Overall, I'd say that if the memcard issue is resolved, it'd be the best release yet, even with the minor glitching in FF7. I'll have to bust out some more games to try, but as far as I see it, this is a big leap forward... I can only imagine a fully optimized GPU and the 2.6 kernel!

Thanks, zod!

I'm testing on my C860, and things seem to be a bit quicker than the last build from awhile back. I'm testing with Final Fantasy 8, and things seem pretty good... except the memory card functionality seems borked. The in-game FMVs play *much* smoother than before (probably because it seems interleave works). I can't wait to see what future builds bring! Keep up the amazing work!

I can't wait to see what I've been missing out on in the last few months!

Sorry for the dumb and off-topic question, but every time I try to click on one of the links to download a service pack, it just opens up a new window with garbled text. This happens on my linux box in Firefox and Konqueror, my zaurus under Firefox, and my Powerbook under Firefox and Safari. It's driving me nuts. I tried searching the forums for an answer, but I guess my search query wasn't on target... so... how do I get the dammed thing?

It's probably something simple but it's 4am and I want to see what r197 is all about!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Current State Of Gps In Pdaxrom?
« on: June 27, 2007, 03:47:03 am »
Well, inevitably, school and work took up a lot of time the last few months, and my zaurus has been collecting dust... much to my dismay.

Well, the summer's here, and I have a lot of free time on my hands, and a girlfriend who absolutely loves to go for hikes (as do I, but I was too lazy to go out on my own). There's so much good hiking here in central Pennsylvania that I never knew about, and it's great to spend a day walking along the ridge of a mountaintop and stop and look at the incredible views.

Anyhoo, before I get too far off tangent: I need to know the latest in the state of GPS software under pdaXrom. I've searched a bit, but I can't seem to find more than some older info and lots of promise of running TomTom stuff under Angstrom. I don't really have the time to mess with Angstrom right now, but I can't wait to see how it progresses. I have a really old build of gpsdrive (from march 2005) that works, but is really old. I tried searching for new builds, but it seems like many of the feeds I've been using are old or non-working. Anyone know where I can grab the latest release?

Also, is there any new things I should know about regarding GPS under pdaXrom? I tried searching the forums, but I didn't turn up much. Thanks for all your help!

In the latest build, the text overlays in Final Fantasy 8 are broken. Other than that, great work. I tested a much older build, and the new ones are certainly much faster!
