Zaurus - pdaXrom / New, Fast Pdaxrom Settings Tools
« on: September 17, 2006, 11:51:21 am »
I've compiled the edesktop "etimedate" (picture see above) application for my C1000.

It's only for testing how fast the application is.

The date/time setting compiled out of the box is not correct yet.

Maybe a merge of the functionallities makes sense?

Hey, that datentime program above looks really nice! I look into it how can I use some part of it, or merge the two. And I will look for others too in efltk (and in EDE - Equinox Desktop Environment) Thanks for telling about it, I never tried or seen it before (just heard the name of it).

I'm using fltk2. Btw I really like some apps from your site (fltk-bedic and the tabviewer the most). Good work!

hi Zumi,

good idea to write some faster settings apps!
I will gladly test them from time to time.
One questoin about the datentime tool: Did you add "/etc/rc.d/init.d/atd stop"  before accessing the hwclock (and "/etc/rc.d/init.d/atdatd start" after)? I found this to be necessary to successfully set the time.
atd is installed if kopi-apm is installed. I assume many people use it.

I haven't tought about that, thank you for pointing it out!

It's nice to hear that others think of FLTK as a good choice too; I think Python+GTK is a OK, but C+GTK kinda sucks. I hope Cairo support gets better in FLTK, so it can have antialiased widgets. Now fltk2 CVS makes funny things when compiled with it.

Here are the news on the pdaXrom site: pdaXrom utils rewrite
I just wanted to get some publicity for the new settings tools because the more testing they got, the better they will be!
Some rough test results: original, written in python starts in ~5 seconds, the new one, written in FLTK starts in ~1 sec.

Ps.: Hey, this is my 2^8th post

Is pdaXrom finally going to be openly developed? If so that is fantastic news for the Z community- I am glad sash and laze have seen the light. I never understood why it was closed in the first place- what was being gained? Its not like it was proprietary software they were making money out of. I suppose sash has more to brag about if its a one man show but he'll get more respect by co-operating and we'll all benefit from a faster developed, more stable OS- not that everyone didn't know this already.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=132237\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
OK, isn't good to talk in Sashz place but I think it was purely laziness based.  He like to hack and develop pdaXrom in his own way. For example I think to move to 2.6 included a lot of hacking and it would take too much time to commit everything in a versioning system in the way, so it won't be broken from time to time. That requires a bit more strict developing fashion that doesn't really works with Sashz.

Other problem was that he doesn't always have and had good Internet connection (GPRS only at the moment, for example), so working with something like SVN would be hard too...
I don't know whether the sources on the SVN server will be the ones Sashz works with, but I will import his sources from time to time to the main trunk at least!

There's a solution for you who want to contribute!

The closed-ness of pdaXrom was a problem since I first saw it and started to like it. After some asking, Sashz started to put up sources of apps and build system with every release (and sometimes more often).

I don't think that Sashz kept the source tightly closed, so no one can contribute. They were up, he made some documentation to help developers getting started (Build your ROM).
I made about 3 smaller contributions in the previous year and he accepted them all. Send diff files by email and comments, I don't think Sashz threw any of them away.

It wasn't really easy to contribute, that's for sure... make two copies of the source, edit one of them, make diff, email that. That's what I call hard.

So today I talked with Laze and we agreed that we need some versioning system. The idea is to setup an SVN server (objections, other ideas?) and give developer acc-s to you guys, who want to contribute. You can start a branch there, and Sashz or I will merge the things from it from time to time. So as the usual open source projects developments are going.

I hope you like this kind of open develop feeling (I know I do...) more.
What do you think?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Slypheed - Inbox To Sd?
« on: June 19, 2006, 04:57:30 am »
I moved my whole home dir to SD, but I've got a lot of problem with simple symlinking, so if you decided you want to use andrewwoods' solution, you can do something similar:
Code: [Select]
mount -o bind  /mnt/card/myhome /home/root

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom 1.1.0beta 4 And New Bootloader
« on: June 07, 2006, 06:55:44 am »
Hey guys! There's hope!

I was able to boot a new version of u-boot on a (so I tought) totally bricked C700! It gave me random errors on (Full) NAND erases, gave the symptoms ztep described. And now it was able to boot into emergency system two or three times. Try to download u-boot.bin again and try to Full NAND erase, CF Update, booting with OK multiple times. My one doesn't work well most of the time too... Maybe your flash is corrupted more/other places.

Anyway, I try to help with bugreports to Sashz! Good luck to you all!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fuse Filesystem In Userspace
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:57:05 am »
That fuse doesn't work in the feed (according to Sashz). I was told he played with his Siemens phone and used it but it's not good for anything nowadays. I tried to compile Fuse 2.x because I wanted sshfs and smbfs but got stuck with the parts connecting to the kernel. This is in harmony with the README that says in the 2.4.2 fuse release:
Code: [Select]

Linux kernel version 2.4.X where X >= 21 (some vendor kernels earlier
than this are also known to work).

If somebody is willing to backport it to 18/20, then it could work.  I'm not that kernel hacker type (yet).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Surviving Updating The Rom
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:45:17 am »

I have an always-in SD card, I'm storing everything personal/custom on it in the following way:
I have a directory in /mnt/card called "myhome". I have a small script in /usr/bin with the following content:
Code: [Select]
mount -o bind /mnt/card/myhome /home/rootThis binds it to /home/root so everything is working fine (not so when you just symlink it)

So I login, type in "", logout, login (so my custom .bashrc can be used) and everything's fine. I also link out my custom config files from this dir, so they don't need to be gathered for a reflash, just link them out again when my new system is up. I still have to reinstall all IPKs, which is a bit time consuming, but it usually helps me to keep my system clean (not installing useless packages again ). This way I got my 30min/reflash time too.

Ps.: For those who are wondering where have I gone from the forum/development: I got quite a hard semester at the university, and have to do more things anyway than I usually do, so -- sadly -- I don't have time now. So no new fvwm-pdaxrom releases or gpsdrive ipks in the near future.

very nice. very fast. very pretty.

Any way to run an ap (like ...say..firefox) fullscreen over the taskbar?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=111111\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The most simple method seems to be to add a Keybinding for maximizing to 640x480 and modify the StaysOnTop style of the taskbar.
So, translated to Fvwm language (this adds the keybinding to Fn+5):
Code: [Select]
Key 5 A 2 Maximize 640p 480p
Style ZaurusTaskbar StaysOnBottom
You can add this to your ~/.fvwm/personal/config file, or edit /usr/share/fvwm/.fvwm2rc accordingly.

Ps.: The idea is good, I will implement it in some form, in the next version.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fvwm-pdaxrom 0.4.x
« on: January 15, 2006, 06:04:05 pm »
I'm having a problem getting the menus and toolbar to work.  I get the basic menu and no window management.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled fvwm_pdaxrom a number of times, but no luck.  mbsession and icewmsession both work flawlessly.  I have no idea what the problems is.

Any suggestions?

I do notice that when I run startx I get the folowing error.

[FVWM][main]: <<ERROR>> Cannot read startup file, tried:
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=111083\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Hmm, it seems that you are using a different version of fvwm. Try installing the one in the 1.1.0beta1 feed. Your one searches for config files in /share/fvwm, the one in the feed searches in /usr/share/fvwm. Or, you can move .fvwm2rc from /usr/share/fvwm to /share/fvwm!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fvwm-pdaxrom 0.4.x
« on: January 15, 2006, 04:55:08 pm »
Hi All,

I tryed to use the xystray with fvwm. If I put the line

$FVWMCOMMAND '*ZaurusTaskbar: (4x1, Swallow (Respawn) Xystray `Exec exec xystray -iconrows 1 -iconcols 2 -iconsize 32`)

in my .fvwn2rc-file I can start the mb-applets from the shell and they are visible in the xystray-area, but the clock in not visble in the taskbar anymore. Any idea how to fix it?
Imagine the taskbar as a table, consisting 1x40 cells. You added 4 cell (the xystray), so you have to remove 4 cells from something (usually the iconman). So:
Code: [Select]
$FVWMCOMMAND "*ZaurusTaskbar: (29x1, Swallow FvwmIconMan \`FvwmIconMan\`)"
change it to this:
$FVWMCOMMAND "*ZaurusTaskbar: (25x1, Swallow FvwmIconMan \`FvwmIconMan\`)"
... and the clock becomes visible.
Which scripts do I have to edit to start the mb-applets?
/usr/bin/  does not seem to be the right place for it. If I put mb-applet-cards in this script and restart FVWM the taskbar disappears.
The best place is your .xinitrc file. If you have fvwm-pdaxrom installed, then ~/.xinitrc is a symlink to /usr/share/fvwm-pdaxrom/xinitrc. So delete it, copy it, edit so it starts the needed program.
Code: [Select]
rm ~/.xinitrc
cp /usr/share/fvwm-pdaxrom/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc
mcedit  ~/.xinitrc
*** add this line to it to the end, but *before* the fvwm command:
mb-applet-cards &
I hope this is working with xystray, I don't use it now, so I can't test it.
Is it possible to implement the following features with the FVWM?

We don't have to much place on the Z-screen. It would be very usefull to have the possibility to hide/show the taskbar  with the mouse (like icewm) or even better with a shortkey. So we can have almost windows maximized and easy switch to the taskbar if we need it.
I really haven't tought about this so far, I like to see my taskbar always, but it's possible to make such thing with Fvwm.
I found this in the Fvwm FAQ:
7.17  Autohiding FvwmButtons or other windows

Lemme know if you made something integrateable from it!
Iconify All shortcut is not working for me. The menu-key is mapped to XF86LaunchC (tested it with xev). I edited the .fvwm2rc (changed XF86LaunchD to XF86LaunchC) to map Mail+C to Iconify All,  but no success.
The default Calendar+Home (that's Control+XF86LaunchD in fact) works for me. Mail (or XF86LanuchC) is not a modifier key, so you can't set something like Mail+C. That would be like Q+Enter. Doesn't make sense.
Any suggestions are very apprecated

Best regards

Love the new release! Been using it for a while. I've got a suggestion for making it easier to modify the taskbar (or anything else that changes between landscape/portrait).

I moved the $FVWMCOMMANDS from the landscape and portrait scripts into  seperate files, landscape-bar and portrait-bar, in the ./fvwm directory Here's how I'm doing it. I replaced the $FVWMCOMMANDS from with the following:
[solution skipped]

Thanks for all of your work on fvwm (and the kopi alarm)!

Jerry[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the tip! The reason why I haven't done something similar to the taskbar as the root menu is that this way it doesn't really help. I was thinking about a file where you can put one item per line, and it puts shortcut icons described in the lines on the taskbar.

This way you don't have to do the math with coloumns and rows when you add a new item and I really don't want to change much syntax in the ~/.fvwm/personal folder, so I don't make transistional solutions there if it's possible.

I'm glad you like what I done.

To scoutme: Have you tried using rosetta? It's really nice, [a href=\"]pgas compiled it[/url]. I don't know what's the problem with xstroke, I haven't used it since a long time. Why it doesn't work? If I remember it had a taskbar icon that had to be clicked to draw... Try using xystray to get a systray similar to the matchbox one.

why my menu has no application, exception Aterm and the 3 Exit, Rotate and TheOtherICannotRemember ?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=110372\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Probably the /usr/bin/ program doesn't generates the menu on startup. Try to run it from console and see what's the error.
It happened for me sometimes that there were broken links in /usr/share/applications/ which made the script exit. If it's the same for you, then deleting the broken links solves the problem.
I try to make it more error-proof in the next version.
