Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ruby 1.8.4 Ipk
« on: April 22, 2006, 10:40:12 am »

I needed this on my Z to bring some Rails work home.  Hope someone else finds it usefull.  I was going to include gems, but I decided against it since it is not part of ruby itself.  I'll put up a separate ipk for it later.  If you need gems, it compiles fine from source once you have ruby installed.  For those not familiar with gems, it is a package manager like ipkg, but for ruby programs.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124201\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've been running Rails on my Z too using SQLite3.  I feel a little bit guillty now that I gave up on trying to make an IPK  out of it.    I've got Subversion, ctags and aspell compiled also but I think that I have seen them available as IPKs too.

The only problem that I've found developing Rails on a Z is that Firefox seems to be the only browser with good AJAX support but it's a bit heavy on RAM.

Incidently does anyone know if something like Ruby or would run noticebly faster on PXA270 equiped machine?  I originally thought not which is why I haven't upgraded from my 860 but I read somewhere that the pxa270 had more poke per clock cycle than the pxa255.

Any thoughts?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ir Keyboard Drivers - Alpha Release
« on: March 12, 2006, 06:17:08 am »
I have a Belkin working with 1.1.0 Beta 1 on a C860.

I hope I'm not stating the obvious here but unless I run

# modprobe keybdev
# modprobe uinput

it doesn't work and complains with uinput no such file or directory errror.

Hope that helps.

General Discussion / Working Tomtom Nav On Angstrom

The snag here is that I am treading a thin line with TT's s/w rights... because I own a GO 300 I figure that I am simply seeking to allow me to run the software on an alternative device.

As I understand it, the maps and stuff are all locked to the device hardware (it tries to read a specific section of flash to get the device ID), possibly even encrypted using a key unique to the device. Now, I am created "look-alike" devices/files which will make the ttn think it's running on a GO 300, *but* it will be running on a copy of *my* device. If I then released a file system dump, it'd mean everyone would be using my license key which would be a Bad Thing.

I thought that something like this might be the case.  The best scenario for me would be if the Z did have something (processor id?)  that could be used as a key so that I could just buy the closed source map data from TT and use it with the open source software.  I fully understand TT wanting to keep control of that.

Since they do sell software only packages for other platforms I guess there is an outside chance they might go for just selling the maps, unsupported, on SD if they could still DRM it somehow.

As for time scales, I'm not too fussy about that.  Just knowing it was possible would be enough for me to start pestering TT

Failing getting a legal working copy on my 860, I think that I'm going to have to get a symbian phone and run GPS software on there.  Seems like a shame to miss out on the Zaurus screen though....

This really is exciting!  I agree with Tovarish, a good GPS application would be a killer app (for me anyway     )

Have you thought about adding a link to your page for sponcership?  I think that this is a really worth while project and would support it.  Its probably fairly unlikely but you could even point out the size of the Japanese Z market to TomTom and see if they'd also sponcer you....

User Request for Applications / Bluegps Compiled For Zaurus

Even though nobody requested it, it might be usefull for some:
I have a royaltek RBT-3000 (RBT3000) unit, and I needed a tool for downloading the data logs from it.
A small utility exists  here but of course, a compiled version of it for the zaurus is a bit tad difficult to find.

I've compiled and uploaded statically and dynamically linked versions to my homepage as well as attaching the statically compiled version here (with libgcc and libbluetooth built in).

Excellent! I have a pretec BlueGPS which I think is basically the same thing.  I'll give this a go.  What rom did you compile this for?

Am I right in thinking that as its command line the statically linked version should run on any rom?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Needs A Better Music Player!
« on: February 16, 2006, 05:59:48 pm »
One thing that I really miss from the Cacko Rom is the Sharp music player.  I really prefer the iPod-ish database style interface and I was wondering if we could get something similar on pdaXrom.

The two candidates I was looking at were Rhythmbox and AmaroK.  Basically I'm looking for a player which will let me find music by artist, album, genre, etc. Oh and it needs to do a decent job of running full screen rather that as a tiny little window.

Does anyone have experience of either of these two (I don't have access to a big Linux box at the moment to try them myself) or any other player which might be suitable.

Also, I would be interested in opinions on how much work they would be to port (something I'm fairly new to)?   I think at the moment that Rhythmbox would be easier (need to port GStreamer too) but I'd appreciate any comment.

(Once I get an mp3 player sorted out then I only need to persuade Maslovsky to port Kino2 and everything will be peachy   )

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Packaging Ruby And Svn
« on: February 16, 2006, 05:38:05 pm »
I've built Ruby 1.8.4 and SVN 1.1.4 and they both seem to be working great.  I've even managed to get Rails installed via gem.  Nice

These are the first packages that I've built for pdaXrom and it seemed very easy but packaging them up is proving to be a bit of a problem though.  I'm getting the following:-

Code: [Select]
tar: --exclude=CONTROL: Cannot stat: No Such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

As far as I can tell the control file looks ok.  I've been following the been following the tutorial for making ipkgs but I could do with a few more pointers.  Any ideas on what I should try checking next?  If the problem is definetly with the control file I think I'll just start from scratch again....

Software / Planmaker For Zaurus!
« on: December 27, 2005, 08:06:23 am »
What makes me think that TextMaker has been abandened is that it still does not have proper support for VGA screens.  The widget set used is either too big or too small.

Softmaker has acknowledged this on their forum but have said that they don't have time to fix the icon set.  Also when I asked if the community could resize the icons for them the
reply was that they wouldn't let us try!

As an aside I also found my copy of TextMaker to be really slow when compared to AbiWord but YMMV.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Rc12 For Sl-c7x0/7500/c860/c1000/c3100
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:25:27 pm »
Excellent news.

I'm downloading right now.

Apart from the bug fixes, what changes can C7xx/860 users look forward to?  Is this just bug fixes with enhancements for the Cxx00 models?

Many thanks,

Looks like both Ruby and Rails are now working perfectly!

Thanks again Willgan.

Gem is working for me also so now I can use that to fetch and install other ruby "stuff".

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ruby 1.8.3 Compiled..
« on: October 20, 2005, 04:16:46 pm »
Hmmm....

I'm getting an "Illegal instruction" error when I try to run any ruby scripts including Rails.

I notice that the ipk has iwmmxt in file name, could this mean that the ipk will only run on a PXA270 equiped Zaurus?

Failing that any other suggestions?

Unfortunately, as far as I know there are no Zaurus models that are SDIO compatible.
