Hello graynada,

thanks for the hint to UserLAnd. I tried Gimp, but it said "unable to open display". Also "Idle" seems to have problems with the display and doesn't run.
Anyway, could you perhaps direct me to some intsructions on how to get "Android Studio" into UserLAnd and how to run it?

Kind regrads

Hi,

I'm pretty sure I did nothing more complicated than download the Linux zip from the Android Studio website and run it as per the instructions.  The trick I found to make things easy to navigate from the UserLAnd file system to the device and and SD card file system is to set up some bookmarks in the file manager to get to them.  This is because permissions deny access to some of the parent directories but you can access them if you know the file path.

If I get time later I will install UserLAnd on my latest device (Asus Zenfone 6 (which is fantastic BTW   )) and see if that jogs my memory more.

Hope this helps

...so, where's my free Gemini/Cosmo IDE? ;-)

When I had my Gemini I did have Android Studio running inside UserLAnd on Android.  I didn't do much with it in that environment but seemed to run OK and I don't see why you couldn't do some app development in there.  I can't remember if I tried Eclipse or not but no reason to suspect it won't work either.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Jake, very kind words.  The apps will remain available, I just won't be able to develop them further as I intended.  All the best for the future.

Hi and y
thanks,

Yes I did consider the Cosmo and there are a lot of promising features there.  However It still won't be easy to use the camera in that form factor and I didn't really want to fork out for a new phone at this time..

I have decided to but my Gemini up for sale.  It has been my daily driver for about a year and I have enjoyed using it.  The keyboard is great and made typing so so much easier but on recent reflections I have noticed I have effectively stopped taking pictures over the last year.  This is a combination of the quality of the external camera, the ease of use and the default orientation (the latter probably fixable).  Furthermore my main use case for the Gemini (coding on the go) never really materialised due to screen size not really working with the IDEs available.

So I have spent a week reverted to my previous phone, a Wileyfox Swift 2X, and have adapted back to the lack of physical keyboard easier than I thought I would.  With the other conveniences of this actually very good phone have led me to the decision to part ways with my Gemini.

This will mean I will no longer be able to continue development of my 2 Gemini apps, GeminiLED and GeminiTorch but I will leave them in the Google Play and the source code is on GitHub for anyone to pick up and develop.  I will help where ever I can, but won't be in a position to test.

I will probably still pop by the forums occasionally but good luck everyone with your Geminis and Cosmo futures where applicable.

Technically speaking, I'd guess the "red bit", "green bit" and "blue bit" corresponds to the first, second and third segment of a multi-color LED package. For an RGB or Red/Green LED, the first and second segments are indeed Red and Green, but for a Red/Blue LED, the second segment is blue. That is likely why the bit for the second segment, which would correspond to green in an RGB or Red/Green LED, must be set, to turn on the second segment of a Red/Blue LED, and thereby make it shine blue.

That sounds extremely likely but you would have thought that the PC API would handle to anomaly given you still have to set a blue bit for the bi colour LED! Not extremely but they probably didn't envisage others using it....

Somewhat off topic, that, apparently, means the wireless LED is actually an RGB LED and not just Red/Blue. That makes me wonder if the Caps Lock and charging LEDs are RGB too, rather than "only" Red/Blue and Red/Green. No, it doesn't really matter. I'm just curious.

The caps lock LED is only red and blue, and you have to set the 'green' RGB bit to make it blue, rather confusingly! The charging LED I think is RGB but the implementation of this is I believe vie the standard Android notification LED API rather than the bespoke Planet Computers route for the other LEDs.

Hope that makes sense.

The right hand LED on mine flashes purple when it is trying to find a connection (sometimes!)

Another thing I have noticed is that I don't get battery usage data, it always reports 'battery usage data not available'.  Anyone else seeing this 'feature'?

I would disable app bar but I use the force rotate (must work out how to achieve this and map the Planet key to do it   )
New shortcut of FN+Shift+R now forces rotate.

Steve

Ah yes of course, but a 2 handed operation practically so I might still give it a go

Thought after a couple of days use I'd drop my thoughts on 8.1 into a thread for others to add to add detect common themes.

Biggest concern I would say is that battery life has diminished noticeably.  Completely unexpected but on 7.1.1 I am on at about 30-40% at the end of the day, 8.1 15% has been the best so far and that was on a day I used it much less than normal.

Slightly frustrating that the Plant apps are now hard wired in so you can only disable.  I preferred the evenly spaced icons on the app bar to the bunched left/scrollable version we have now.  I would disable app bar but I use the force rotate (must work out how to achieve this and map the Planet key to do it   )

There are some nuances that come with Android 8.1 I find irritating like 'app x is using battery' nice idea but I want to be able to swipe it away rather than have to disable it.

- The Factory Reset does not work on Android 8 - we are investigating this
That's quiet a biggy if you were wanting to pass your Gemini on!  I guess you would have to use the partition tool to wipe in some way.

In other news is anyone finding 8.1 laggy and the 'x app is using battery' notification annoying?  I notice now the Planet Computer apps come built in meaning you can't uninstall, just disable, very unhelpful.  Oh and the app bar doesn't spread the icons evenly anymore, they are all bunched left.

looks like it will be available by the end of the month.

Indiegogo update 70: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gemini-p...74#/updates/all

Lol, but which month?
well, this time the news came directly from planet computers, the link in the first post is from an independent fanpage.

True but PC have also directly said in the same update page 'by the end of the year' meaning last year, and most recently, 5 weeks ago, within 2 weeks, so hence the humorous question ????????

Next Monday a limited number of Wifi/LTE devices should receive the update... fingers crossed!

Varti

Or if I wanted to be really cynical does this sound like a limited release in case further bugs emerge? I don't know anything about release firmware updates but I am struggling to come up with a technical reason (or method how to!) why you would do this other than the split between processor types, but PC have stated the limited release will cover both X25 and X27s.

Has this update happened yet? I check with my Gemini, now and then, but it's still insisting that 7.1 is the current system. On my machine, as you might have noticed, I've rooted, unrooted, re-rooted, multi booted and finally resigned to the standard andoid, I'm not sure whether my system can be called a standard machine, or whether it's a non-rooted rooted machine.

lol no!  In October it was by the end of the year, on 18 Mar it was within 2 weeks, on 9 Apr it was this week.  Think of it more as by the end of a year, a week....
