For Sale / Wanted / sl5600 (pxa255) for trade
« on: October 25, 2004, 11:05:57 pm »
My wife bricked my c760 (spilled a full glass of coke on it, I cried)

Using pdaxrom for so long, I'm having a hard time appreciating qtopia.  Sure the switch to a pocketpc pda isn't going to help my withdrawls, but having something new to play with is good enough for me while I wait a few months to replace my c760.

Looking for a pocketpc with similar hardware specs as the 5600.

Built in keypad is not important.  I've gotten where I perfer the handwritting recongizer anyway.

So if you know anybody with a pocketpc that loves your zaurus, please let them know about me...

I'll preinstall any rom and any apps that are available.

PXA 255
128mb SD card (formatted to ext2)
WCF12 WiFi card.  (802.11b)
Sharp camera card.

I've had a brando screen protector on the screen since about a week after I bought it 9 months ago.  I honestly can not remember if there are any scratches on it or not.  If I get any serious offers I will pull the screen protector off and check if requested.

I can't think of anything else I can tell you about this.  Never been over clocked, lightly used.  It is really in great shape.

OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / xqt installation?
« on: September 27, 2004, 06:55:52 pm »
Has anybody been able to install xqt on oz 3.5.1 (opie)?

I read a recent post saying that lardman posted some steps a while back, but I am unable to find it.

I've installed the packages and moved the files in /home/zaurus to /root.  I've also made sure that /opt/QtPalmtop/bin was in my PATH.  I've link Xqt to X.

Not really sure what is going wrong...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Firefox 0.9
« on: June 22, 2004, 09:23:32 pm »
Newest version of firefox has been uploaded to the unstable feed.

Uninstall your old firefox before installing the new version.  Don't worry about your bookmarks and stuff, they will get imported the first time you run the new version.

I used the gtk toolkit instead of gtk2, so there is no xft suppport in this package.  Using the lighter gtk makes a difference while you are using the browser (easier scrolling, sub menus are faster), but it still takes just as long to fire the fox up.

Check out the new extension and theme managers.  They allow you add pluggins and change themes easily.  I've installed and used the google toolbar without any problems.

New in 0.9 (from the mozilla site):

#  - Extension Manager
# - Theme Manager
# - Data Migration/Import
# - New Visual Theme
# - Better Bookmarks
# - Better Search

General Discussion / VI: what\'s the big deal?
« on: June 13, 2004, 07:50:29 pm »
For the diehard VI users:

I\'m wondering how such a complex editor got so popular.  Why do you use VI?  People like to say that other editors like nano and pico tend to mess things up, but I find it much easier to mess something up using VI than using pico.

To me, trying to learn how to use VI is like playing a game that my 5 year old son made up.  ZZ to save and exit? come on

This should probably be in one of those flamewars posts

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Frozen bubble updated
« on: June 12, 2004, 10:37:15 pm »
I\'ve updated frozen-bubble in the unstable feed.

If you want to save your high scores, do this before installing:
mv /home/root/.fb* /home

and then after install:
mv /home/.fb* /home/root

Changes:

The \'p\' button now pauses the game.  I know that not having a pause button had to annoy somebody out there.

I converted all of the png images fro 24-bit to 8-bit and reduced the coloring from 256 colors to 64 colors.  This cuts the file sizes of the images in more than half and improves game speed and loading time.  You shouldn\'t even notice the difference on the tiny screen

Got rid of the \'falling bubble\' animation that slowed down gameplay in the 2 graphic level (the default graphics level).

I\'m probably going to do 1 more update, its just going to be a couple of weeks before I have the time.  I want to compress the wav files a little to save space and find some more ways to improve speed even more.

5x00 General discussions / Why can\'t I create a swapfile
« on: June 06, 2004, 10:44:30 pm »
I\'m having a problem using a swapfile on my 5600... I swear I have done this a hundred times before.  The memory applet will not even create the swapfile for me.

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/root/swapfile bs=1024 count=8192
8192+0 records in
8192+0 records out
# mkswap -v1 /home/root/swapfile
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 8384512 bytes
# /sbin/swapon /home/root/swapfile
swapon: swapon: Invalid argument

I am using a fresh install of zynergy.  I was running tkcrom before and was having the same problem (this was the reason I switched roms, thinking it was tkcrom\'s fault)

here is what mount shows:

# mount
/dev/root on / type jffs2 (ro)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/ram1 on /dev type minix (rw)
/dev/mtdblock3 on /home type jffs2 (rw,noatime)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Any web developers who use pdaX?
« on: June 06, 2004, 01:57:53 pm »
If so, what linux tools do you use on your desktop?  As long as they don\'t require KDE or Gnome I\'ll try to compile them for pdaX

I have compiled bluefish for pdaX, which is a very powerful editor for web developers.  The only catch is that the spell checker seg faults, so I am going to recompile it without spell checking support before releasing.  This may be a good thing, depending how you want to look at it.   Bluefish compiled with spell checking support requires aspell, which takes up almost as much storage space as bluefish itself.

The version I have compiled is 0.13, it requires gtk2.  The last version that can use gtk1 is .07, I\'m going to compile that as well for those who want something a little lighter.  (gtk1 apps will run smoother on your Z than gtk2)

I also found GINF: http://www.ndeepak.info/stuff/vtu/ginf/

GINF is a WYSIWYG html editor.  Not as powerful as bluefish, but still looks nice.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Slypheed claws for pdaX
« on: June 05, 2004, 10:04:23 am »
Uploaded to the pdaX unstable feed.

http://www.pdaxrom.org/ipk_feed.php?showfeed=unstable

More info about Slypheed claws here: http://sylpheed-claws.sourceforge.net/features.php

Includes a dillo plugin to view your html formatted emails and an image viewer plugin to view attached images (I haven\'t tested the image viewer).  The image viewer plugin required gdk-pixbuf, available in the unstable feed too.

Accessories / Prefered SD card
« on: June 01, 2004, 08:46:53 pm »
I\'m not having any luck with SD cards.  My 256MB lexar died on me last week, now my only other one (128mb Sandisk) is acting up.

Is there a SD card out there that is prefered by Zaurus owners?  Has anybody tried the kingston cards?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / refreshing the desktop?
« on: May 30, 2004, 11:58:54 pm »
is there a way to refresh the openbox desktop without restarting X11?

I\'ve compiled X Desktop Calendar for pdaXrom, but you can\'t actually see the calendar unless you open something like aterm and move it over the area on the desktop where the calendar loads.  Once you do this you can close aterm adn the calendar will sit on the desktop.. looks pretty nice

Would refreshing the desktop after the calendar loads keep me from having to do this?

If anybody wants to help test this you can get the ipk here:

http://zaurus.hostnic.us/testing/xdkcal_0....t3_armv5tel.ipk (only 10k!)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / gqmpeg for pdaXrom
« on: May 30, 2004, 12:40:07 am »
Available in the unstable feed

http://www.pdaxrom.org/ipk_feed.php?showfeed=unstable

This is a frontend for mpg321, and requires gdk-pixbuf (both available in the unstable feed).

Download themes from http://gqmpeg.sourceforge.net/mpeg-skin-index.html (do yourself a favor and only install the light themes)

The themes should go in  /usr/local/share/gqmpeg/skins
