Software / Abiword != Hancom
« on: June 08, 2005, 11:00:15 pm »
After flashing to pdaXrom I started noticing odd behavior from AbiWord when it would try to read/edit a .doc file created by HancomWord.

Now the file is (hopelessly?) corrupt, just my password file, no worries...

Yeah, I had a backup.

Sharp ROMs / Mounting Read-only /usr/share.rom As Read-write
« on: January 13, 2005, 04:22:54 am »
I would like to make some changes to my mc.ext file which resides in /usr/share.rom/mc, but the area is mounted as read only. How do I mount it as read-write so that I can make my change?

Failing that, can I remove the Midnight Commander package and re-install it elsewhere?

Thanks,

John

General Discussion / System Time/date Problems
« on: December 12, 2004, 03:17:43 am »
Guys, I keep getting a "The system date doesn't seem to be valid" when I reboot (which is happening fairly often because of package manager lockups).

Usually the time isn't anywhere near accurate so I don't bother with it. But the system date messages are getting annoying

Currently I'm using OZ 3.5.2 on a C860, but I have had timekeeping problems with every ROM that I've tried. Not to mention my 5500.

Is there something wrong with how the Z keeps time?

Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Flashing problems
« on: October 22, 2004, 04:00:29 am »
Hi guys, I thought that I would try out the new OZ 3.5.1 rom.

I dl'ed the files, named them updater.sh, initrd.bin, & zImage and loaded them on both 256 & 512 meg cards. Both cards have ample free space and are formatted FAT16 (stock factory format). Neither card has shown any errors in the past and have never failed to flash the Z before this.

I did the flash thingie and when it finished, I got a dialog box that says "A new storage media detected" and that's it.

I tried re-downloading the files, two different CF cards, and a few different permutations of the "zimage" (there seems to be some conflicts on how to name it)

What I tried was:

zimage
zImage
zimage.bin
zImage.bin

with no luck.

Thanks in advance for the help. Itching to try out 3.5.1

Software / Problems with ipkg
« on: September 29, 2004, 05:16:35 am »
So I download ipk's from both stable and unstable from the pdaXrom site. I make sure to get the "Packages" files as well.

I setup my package manager to use the directories that I downloaded the ipk's to as the feed and told ipkg to update.

ipkg found the directories as they should, but it returned the error message "Unsupported scheme".

Googling for the error came up with a few references to the same problem with wget.

Has anyone else seen this problem, or knows what's going wrong?

Thanks,

John

Software / ipkg question
« on: September 25, 2004, 06:46:55 am »
Suppose I want to view the contents of a .ipk prior to installing it. Running "ipkg files xxx.ipk" seems to do something, but doesn't display anything to the screen.

Once the file is installed I could view it in /usr/lib/ipkg/info/xxx.list if I liked, but I'd like to be able to view the contents beforehand.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

John

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Problems flashing OZ on my 860
« on: July 11, 2004, 01:40:41 am »
I posted this on openzaurus-users over at SourceForge, but might as well post it here as well.

I've been trying to flash OZ on my 860 with no luck.

I went to the site (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/) and picked up the packages for
both 3.3.5 and 3.3.6-pre1.

I renamed the appropriate files (initrd-gcc3.bin, zimage-boxer.bin) to initrd.bin and
zimage.bin respectively.

I copied all three files (updater.sh being the third file of course) to the root of my 512 meg Sandisk CF card. The same card that I have been using to flash my 860 for some time now.

I yank the battery (otherwise the unit would not turn on at all), plug in the charger, hold down the "OK" button and fire it up. The screen takes me to all of the right places and I begin the flash.

The flash looks like it is doing fine and the unit reboots and hangs on the dragon screen.

This does this for both 3.3.5 and 3.3.6-pre1. Eventually the flashing cursor goes out and it just sits there. I tried this twice for 3.3.6-pre1 and once for 3.3.5, each time erasing the three files and re-copying them to the root of the CF card (I have been burned by having a bad copy of updater.sh before when I went to flash).

I tried to flash it again using the TKrom, but couldn"t find the zimage file that the 860 needs (anybody know where to find that?). So I tried the OZ z file instead (not expecting much) with the same results except that it spit out an "error!" before going to the dragon screen.

So since it"s late, and a working Z would be really nice  I went back to cracko using the same card. This shows that both the Z and the card are working fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for all of your help, and I look forward to giving OZ a shot on my 860 (loved it on my 5500).

General Discussion / Alternative AC adapters
« on: July 07, 2004, 10:26:16 pm »
Guys, my partner found a supplier for a AC adapter that should* work well for the Z.

It's a Astrodyne PSA05R-050.

Input voltage:     90-264 volts
Input Frequency: 47-63 Hz
+/- 5% regulation

... lots of other good specs (can't seem to find them on the website though).

And you can get whatever adapters that you need for your country.

http://www.astrodyne.com/astro/product_mai...R&sku=PSA05R050

*("Should" as in you are on your own). The specs look good, but do your own research first.

John

Edited: Oh, and they are 5 volt, 1 amp and cost $24 bucks each.

Edit #2 Oh, and you will have to make sure that the plug fits (it looks like it should, and it is polarized correctly according to the specs).

Software / Bad font?
« on: May 20, 2004, 06:06:41 am »
When I get an error or a message box (such as a overwrite conformation), I get the funky boxes instead of text. So what font do I need to use to clear this up?

Thanks,

John

Software / 860 flash frenzy
« on: May 20, 2004, 05:47:02 am »
So I get this nifty new 860 and the first thing that I do is to install the Cacko Rom (1.21 with patch). No problem.

Now I go visit killefiz and start downloading some interesting apps.

As I install some of them, I notice that konsole disappears. WTF? I more or less tracked this down to installing opie based apps, so I avoided them after the next flash (I have gotten really good at this. lol...).

This sort of helps but I end up losing it again when I run some of these new apps. Another flash and back to square one.

More apps, this time I hit the LCD off button on the taskbar and the dang thing get into a mode where I can get it to startup for a second and then it shuts off. In the brief time that the screen is visible, the screen resolution is really large and cut off at half of the screen. Eventually it won\'t even start up. \'nother flash.

Yet more apps, things look good, but it gets into this mode where it reboots just about every time I close a program. Flash.

Okay, so now I limit myself to what I think that I absolutely need and install that. Things seem to be stable for the moment, no disappearing apps, no crashes.

I have noticed that most of my problems seem to stem from the \"old\" 5500 apps that I\'ve installed. The problem is that this isn\'t all that apparent what Z the app is designed for when you download the proggie.

So:

a) Is anyone else having this problem?
Is there a more stable ROM that I could be using?

I like the look of the Cacko ROM, but this is killing me
