Sharp ROMs / File Truncated. Need Help Recovering.

Somehow a text file I was working on got truncated by the zaurus. The back portion of the file has disappeared. This is not the first time this has happened; it happened twice on my fat32 SD card, and now it happened on my ext2-formatted internal flash.

I'm hoping the problem is just a corrupted inode and that the missing portion is left untouched in some blocks somewhere. So far i've not touched the zaurus in case the filesystem structure gets changed further.

So my question is, how do I examine the raw contents of the internal flash? I'm still quite new to linux. Do I use debugfs? dumpe2fs? And what's the entry for the internal flash in /dev?

Software / Looking For Uml Program For Cacko Rom Or X/qt

I'm looking for a program to draw UML diagrams with. It doesn't have to produce skeleton code. All it needs to do is:

1. support UML v1.1 and above
2. export diagrams as a picture file
3. run in landscape mode

Yellow doesn't have much export options. Jumlix is too slow. Both are meant for portrait mode.

So, does anyone know of other alternatives? Like AgroUML or Rational Rose?

I'm trying to get my zaurus c860 online with GPRS using my mobile phone, via bluetooth.

Here's my specs:
ROM: Cacko 1.21b (didn't install any extra bluetooth stuff)
Phone: Ericsson T39m
           CID=2
Init string: ATZ
Bluetooth CF: Bluetake BT0100M

I've set up the connection using the "Network" settings. Didn't tinker with any ppp  dialup or chatscripts.

I don't think the bluetooth part is the problem, as you can see from the /var/log/messages below. I started the syslog just before I attempted the connection and stopped syslog when the connection was broken.

I can see on my phone that the pairing with my zaurus is successful and the phone is able to dial out. I can see the "Connecting..." message on my phone and after some time, it breaks and displays "Disconnected. Last session received 0 bytes; sent 0 bytes"

Sometimes, when I do a fresh insert of the bluetooth card, the connection is successful and the network applet shows that I am online but when I try to access a page in Netfront or Opera, I get "DNS host not found". What on earth does that mean? The network applet shows all my IP correctly, as given by my ISP.

Since I don't know anything about networking in general, I need help on what these errors mean. Thanks in advance.

This is a linux question. I'm new to linux.

Why can't I edit the /root/.profile file? As root, I've chmod it to rw but I get an error that the filesystem is read-only when I try to modify it. And yes, the /root directory is also set to rw.

Actually, the main reason I want to edit the .profile file is that I want to customize the bash session (the prompt, environment variables, etc).

Another thing is that /home/zaurus and /home/root have their own .profile files, but after I edited them and rebooted the machine, there wasn't any effect. So what's the purpose of these files?

Singapore/Malaysia / GST/tax for overseas shipments to Singapore

For those of you in Singapore thinking of getting a Zaurus shipped from Japan or any other country for that matter, here\'s some info you might find useful:

1. Anything shipped from overseas above S$400 is subject to 5% GST. (there are a few exceptions, but they don\'t apply to a zaurus).

2. The 5% GST is computed based on the CIF value (cost, insurance & freight) plus the duties payable. Luckily, duties and import taxes are not applicable for the zaurus. If the CIF is more than $400, you have to pay GST.

3. The ICA (Immigarations and Checkpoint Authority) will detain your package (if it is valued at more than S$400) when it arrives, until you pay the GST.

4. How will the ICA know if the package CIF value is more than $400? Well, some packages have their value declared on it. The ICA will also ask you for an invoice (emails are also accepted) to confirm the value.

5. A way to avoid paying GST might be to ask the seller to underdeclare the value of the zaurus so that it is less than $400. Of course, this is illegal, and I\'m not how this will affect the insurance of the package. Another way is to ask the seller to not include the insurance and shipping costs on the package and invoice.

6. You cannot avoid paying GST even if the package is stated as a gift. The ICA will ask you to try to get an invoice from the person who sent the \"gift\" to you, or get a reasonable estimate. It\'s kind of ridiculous that you have to pay for your own presents.

7. You don\'t have to pay GST if you personally bring the zaurus in from overseas. Doe anyone else find it strange that you have to pay GST if the product was shipped to your home, whereas you don\'t have to pay GST if you bring it in yourself, even though in both cases, the transaction was made overseas?

8. I will say this again: you have to pay GST for _anything_ above $400 shipped from overseas. Even if you can convince the authorities that it is for your personal use and you are not going to resell it. Even free gifts that come with your purchase are subject to GST. Even after paying the GST, getting your package, discovering that the machine is faulty, and after the overseas seller agreed to ship you a new machine as a replacement free of charge......you still have to pay GST for the replacement.
