OESF Announcements / Recent Site Outage
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:22:45 pm »
All - I wanted to first apologize for the recent outage with the site/forums.  If you've been around for any length of time you'll know that an outage like this rarely happens.

I want to make sure that everyone knows that Roy and I are still dedicated to the site and forums.  We know how important it is to the community, even after all these years.

If you want to know the details of what went wrong, read on.  Otherwise, please rest assured that the site and forums are here to stay.  We can't of course guarantee no down time ever, that just wouldn't be realistic.  We do appreciate how much knowledge that this community has built over the last decade (or more).  I also want people to know that the Roy is able to get a hold of me outside of the forums.  Also, even though I'm not on the forums much anymore, I'm still very much connected to them and I know when things go wrong.

------
The site/forums are registered with Dreamhost, and at one point they used to be hosted with Dreamhost as well.  Many, many years ago I had the site/forums hosted on dedicated servers to accommodate the bandwidth and usage needs.  It cost me a couple hundred each month and as you know I've been very deliberate about keeping annoying ads out of the forums (unlike many other forums).  My desire has never been to make money from this, just to provide a service to the community.  After a while Roy and I found out that we could leverage ibiblio (thanks ibiblio!) to host the site/forums for free.  I changed from a dedicated hosting plan with dreamhost to a regular shared server plan (to have the site/forums hosted on ibiblio, but the domain registration/renewals and DNS stayed with dreamhost).  For some reason I couldn't just "change hosting plans" with my dreamhost account, I had to create a new account, move the sites/domains/registrations/DNS over and close the old account.  This is where the problem apparently started...

I received an email a couple weeks ago (can't remember the exact date, but that's when the site went down) saying oesf.org has been deleted from the registry (as well as elsix.org, zaurususergroup.org and a couple other domains).  There was no explanation or anything... just that it was deleted.  I worked with dreamhost support to have them explain what the hell went wrong and apparently they didn't complete the move of the domain registration/renewls from my old (dedicated server) account to the new (shared hosting) account.  Because of this, the annual domain renewals for the last couple years had not been paid.  They never emailed me saying, 'hey, you have an outstanding balance' or notified me within the dreamhost control panel.  They didn't say anything for years!

Because the domain was deleted from the registry, it of course went down completely.  After working with (the largely incompetent) dreamhost support team (all via email, they have no phone support) they told me that I had to pay the past due domain renewals AND I had to pay $100 per domain for redemption, or wait 60 or so days for the sites to become available to re-register.  This to me was complete bullshit.  They didn't let me know that I owed anything, didn't let me know that the sites would be deleted.. no communication prior to them all being deleted.  Yet, I got the email saying that they had been deleted... so they did know how to email me (it's not like they had an old email).

I immediately paid the past due renewals (rightfully mine to pay) but told them that I would not pay for the $100 redemption fees for each domain.  I told them that because of their screw up (many) they should cover the costs.  Ultimately I got to a support manager and he agreed that they had made the mistake and agreed to cover the redemption.  I would have paid the redemption for oesf.org just to get it back online, but had I done so I wouldn't have any leverage to get them to reimburse me.

Dreamhost has fixed the account and the domain is setup for auto renewal (like all of my other domains).  I haven't been happy with dreamhost for a while now, and last year registered/created a site with godaddy.com.  In the near future, I will be migrating oesf (and my other domains) to godaddy.  Dreamhost doesn't deserve my business anymore.

OESF Announcements / Site & Forum Move Complete
« on: December 13, 2006, 04:39:54 pm »
Yippee!  That wasn't too hard.  I had some troubles with the slightly different versions of mysql servers (the ibiblio server barfed at a few of the default settings from the dreamhost server).

Thanks for everyone's patience!

OESF Announcements / Site Move Happening On 12/12/2006
« on: December 12, 2006, 04:52:58 pm »
OK... everything is ready and I'll be moving the site right now (12/12/2006 ~4pm CDT).

While the move is happening, I will be locking the forums so that people can still access the forum in a read only mode.

I will also keep the forum locked and available via the server's IP address until DNS fully propogates:  64.111.96.127.

Thanks for your patience while we go through this transition.

OESF Announcements / Found Problem With Server
« on: May 26, 2006, 10:02:26 pm »
We think we found the issue which has been causing the site to clock or completly timeout in the mornings.  Apparently updatedb has been running daily to refresh the locate db and the process lingered for several hours eating up memory and cpu utilization.  Since we obviously don't need to use locate on the server (as much as we need responsiveness!) we've removed it from cron.

Hopefully this will fix the issue.  This however doesn't mean that we'll continue to stay on the dreamhost dedicated server indefinitrely.  We'll continue to persue moving the site to ibiblio.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Is It Possible To Change Networking Device
« on: September 21, 2005, 10:35:42 pm »
Basically I've  just recently found the aegis client for the 6000 and it works great, allowing me to access our corporate network (all buildings are wifi enabled  ) and I can use opera to access OWA (outlook web access).  The great thing is that I can have full access to my email and calendar (live without syncing) and I can leave my heavy laptop at my desk, and I don't have to buy a corporate approved MS device.

Now I'm trying to see if I can get this client to work on my 1000, simply because I prefer the 1000 keyboard over the 6000 (trade off being that the 6k has the built in wifi).  It's my understanding that the aegis client was built to only work with the wlan0 device on the 6000, though I'm assuming that it could work with any Z with wlan0.  So, can eth0 be changed to wlan0?  Or should I just be happy that it works on the 6000...

P.S.  I called meetinghouse to ask if they were planning to continue development on the client for the zaurus, and I got a voicemail back saying that they had no plans to.  Basically one of their customers paid them a good sum of money to port the client to the 6000 for their own use, and then allowed them to release the client and charge a nominal fee for it.  The guy in the voicemail said that there were slim chances that we could get the client to continue development, but almost nil chances of getting the source.  Either way, it was more info then what I was expecting

SIMpad forum / F'd Up My Simpad... Need To Get Jtag Cable
« on: September 18, 2005, 01:40:51 pm »
I've googled all over to find a "JTAG cable DLC5" per the instructions on OpenSIMpad wiki.  I found a ton of links with jtag specs, etc, but couldn't find much on buying a ready made cable... then I found one on ebay.

Can someone tell me if this is the right cable to get to fix my simpad?

TIA

OESF Announcements / Site Outage On Sept 12 @ ~ 12:30 Pm Pst (gmt+8)
« on: September 12, 2005, 11:18:41 pm »
Due to a power outage in Los Angeles, Dreamhost had a complete outage in their hosting facilities and we of course lost our sites

It seems for some reason that ZUG came back up much sooner than the OESF site or the forums, and it seems that the OESF site is still down (yet the forums are back up... with db connectivity issues here and there).

Who knows if the sites will be stable in the next few hours/days.  I suspect that if the lights stay on then we'll be OK...

OESF Announcements / Brief Outage This Morning
« on: July 09, 2005, 11:30:16 pm »
Sorry for the brief outage this morning.  I woke up and checked the forums only to find that the zug and oesf (and my other sites) were down.  For some reason dreamhost experienced some kind of apache config issue.

Sorry for the troubles.... hopefully this won't happen again soon.

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Used C1000 Pdair Case
« on: June 21, 2005, 09:36:54 pm »
I'm probably going to have to buy a new one, as they are relatively new.. but I thought I'd try anyway...

I'm looking for a used (in any shape) "PDair-C31" case (fits the 1000/3000).  I intend to chop it up and only use the bottom piece (the part that has the plastic pieces to hold the Z).

I suppose I'd rather chop up a used one than a new one

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Couple Bugs With Oz On 1000
« on: May 05, 2005, 11:50:21 pm »
C1000
2.4.20-3.5.3-snapshot-20050505
3.5.3-snapshot-20050427

until bugs.openembedded.org is up for submitting bugs I figured I'd list a couple out here...

1.  the default font settings (fixed size 7) are just a bit too small for me, so I changed it to fixed size 12 and this causes console to terminate.  Change it back to 7 or to something else (smoothsans size 12) and it console works fine.
Code: [Select]
Console was terminated due to signal code SIGSEGV
2.  the updated kernel works great (thanks noodles!), but there's still some minor fixes to be made:  the @ isn't mapped as well as the Cut / Copy / Paste.

3.  the on/off button on the front doesn't suspend the z when powered on

4.  Under Light and Power Settings, I have the "On closing the hinge" set to "display off" but the display remains on anyway.

5.  the Home key isn't mapped

please don't take any of this as complaints... I know this is a work in progress.  Thanks for a great rom!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Can't Get 1000 Into Service Menus
« on: May 01, 2005, 10:22:32 pm »
I can't seem to get my 1000 into the service menus.  I've been doing the standard D+M after taking out the batter for 30 seconds, then re-inserting the battery and connecting the power...

I was going to flash to OZ to check it out but wanted to make a NAND backup first and simply make sure I could access the menu in case anything bad happened.

So, has any other 1000 users been able to access the service menus?

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Should We Have More Feeds?
« on: April 26, 2005, 10:31:26 am »
greg2 made a suggestion in this thread about possibly creating an OZ feed.  I would be happy to create an OZ feed on the ZUG site (such as http://www.zaurususergroup.org/ozfeed or something like that), but before I do, I want to make sure this is something that the OZ maintainers want this.

This also makes me think of having different feeds for the different models of zaurus.  For example, when the 3000 came out, a couple people created threads to list each of the packages that work correctly on that  model.  Maybe we can take those lists and create a 3000 feed?

I don't necessarily think we need a seperate feed for each model, as I'm sure some consolidation could happen.

Anyone have any additional thoughts on this?

Thanks

OESF Announcements / Minor Forum Changes Complete!
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:08:59 am »
The forums seem to be continually growing to accommodate new devices, roms, etc., and many people have complained that the length of the main forums page is just too long.  So I thought it was time to make some big changes.

I've created a copy of the OE Forums and started moving things around a bit, and got some feedback from our admins.  Now it's time to get feedback from the community.

Please visit the OE Test Forums and check it out.  Please feel free to post new topics or otherwise test the forums.  JUST BE AWARE THAT THE TEST FORUMS DATA IS ON A SEPERATE DB FROM THE OE FORUMS, AND THAT ANY POSTS CREATED IN THE TEST FORUMS WILL BE DELETED AFTER TESTING.  WE WILL NOT MERGE ANY DATA FROM THE TEST FORUMS TO THE OE FORUMS.

As usual, please be very candid with your feedback.  Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Thanks,

offroadgeek
