Software / Zbedic 1.2 Released
« on: June 07, 2007, 07:41:03 am »
The history and the back/forward navigation buttons has been throughly reimplemented to make them the same as the corresponding functions in a web-browser. Additionally, for faster switch between frequently used dictionaries, the dictionary pop-up list shows three most recently used dictionaries at the top. The history listing is a great help for those who learn languages, as it makes easy to revisit the unknown words that one has come upon recently. The words can be then copied to the favorite learning software (SuperMemo in my case) to make sure they will be memorized and not forgotten.

Software / Comprehensive List Of Zbedic Dictionaries
« on: March 05, 2007, 01:50:55 am »
zbedic has an amazingly large collection of free dictionaries, which are nevertheless very difficult to find. To make searching for these dictionaries easier, I created a large list of available dictionaries. The list is probably not  complete and may have many incorrect entries. I would therefore appreciate your help in correcting these existing entries or adding new dictionaries. More information can be found on the '
zbedic dictionaries page.

Software / Announce: Geokajet 1.0
« on: October 29, 2006, 02:47:04 pm »
GeoKajet is a geocaching application for Qtopia. If you do not know what geocaching is, visit the geocaching web site at http://www.geocaching.com.

GeoKajet can:
    * Display cache descriptions from www.geocaching.com page in a nice, single column format, appropriate for small screens.
    * Decode encrypted hints.

You can also view cache descriptions in an HTML browser, such as Opera or NetFront, or using a PDF viewer. But these programs consume more memory on your PDA and are slower to load. Besides, the original layout of geocaching web pages or PDF files is not really suitable for small screens. GeoKajet solves this problem by simplifying HTML and using a lightweight HTML browser to display it.

User Request for Applications / Synchronization With Google Calendar
« on: July 26, 2006, 02:59:35 am »
Something that would be a killer app for me:

An application that would synchronize the standard calendar application with Google Calendar. Both the calendar application and Google Calendar have their APIs, so it should be feasible.

Anyone would be interested in investing a few days in programming such a thing? A small donation (or larger if there are more people interested) is possible.

5x00 Hardware / Sl5500 Smoked
« on: June 29, 2006, 06:18:55 pm »
How did it happen: I connected a car lighter adapter, after a minute the adapter started to smoke. After that the Zaurus does not start and the battery cannot be charged.

Symptoms:
* No reaction after pressing "cancel"
* When the power cable is connected, no led is lit
* The battery does not seem to get charged (I measured about 1V on the battery connectors when the power cable is plugged)
* The battery works properly (checked in another Zaurus)

Does anyone know what could get burned? Is it possible to fix it, or I should start looking for a new Z on eBay?

Software / Announce: Zbedic 1.1
« on: June 14, 2006, 07:40:05 am »
The latest release of the dictionary reader with (probably) the largest collection of free dictionaries, can be downladed from:

http://bedic.sourceforge.net/

The major effort has been devoted to make zbedic run on Linux desktop (QT without QTopia). Therfore binary packages for Debian and other Linux distributions are available starting from this release. This release has also several improvements for the Zaurus version: images can be included in dictionaries, redesigned 'add dictionary' interface and new file dialogs.

Sharp ROMs / I386 Version Of Libsl.so
« on: May 20, 2006, 03:14:12 am »
I would be grateful if somebody could send me a link or a file with the i386 version of sharp-specific libraries (libsl.so and everything it depends on) for i386.

I would like to use Sharp's file dialog in my application. I took the sl*.h header files from Kino2, I have arm libraries on my Z, but I need also i386 libraries for debugging on a desktop.

Thanks.

Software / New Release Of Zbedic - 1.0.rc1
« on: March 04, 2006, 07:38:44 pm »
A long planned extension to zbedic is finally there. Now dictionaries can be edited in zbedic.  To enjoy this new feature, dowload the latest version from http://bedic.sourceforge.net/index.html.

Because there were major changes, this version is currently beta (marked rc1). If you find any problems, report them using the Bugs tracker at the SF project page.

Sharp ROMs / Fuse For Cacko
« on: December 06, 2005, 05:21:40 pm »
It might be interesting to see FUSE (http://fuse.sourceforge.net/) in the next version of Cacko.

This would make possible to setup an encrypted files system (http://pobox.com/~vgough/encfs.html), ssh file system (http://fuse.sourceforge.net/sshfs.html), or even gphotofs (http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/~lester/gphoto2-fuse-fs/)  without a need for any additional kernel modules.

What do you think?

Software / Rdiff-backup
« on: November 27, 2005, 03:33:49 pm »
Has anyone compiled rdiff-backup for Zaurus?

rdiff-backup could be a pretty convienient way to backup files over a wireless connection or a USB cable.

Qt/Qtopia / C++ Exception Handling
« on: November 20, 2005, 08:16:49 am »
Is it possible to handle C++ exception in Qtopia applications?

I compile my application without the "-fno-exceptions" flag, but nevertheless the execeptions do not seem to work. The application aborts instead of catching the exception.

Sharp ROMs / Cannot Connect A Digital Camera
« on: November 10, 2005, 06:06:15 pm »
I cannot get the usb-host to work with my camera.

The camera is normally recognized as a usb storage device. I can mount the camera on my laptop using /dev/sda1 (2.6.12) or /dev/sda (2.4.something).  But on Zaurus:

mount /dev/sda /mnt/ms -> gives "Invalid argument"

and

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/ms -> gives "No such device or address"

/proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/0 shows the camera recognized as an SCSCI device.  USB Card reader works with the same usb-host cable without any problems - it is automatically recognized and mounted.

Any suggestions what can be wrong?

I tried downloading:

* Desktop_Software -> Qtopia Desktop: .zip file seems to be corrupted
* Desktop_Software -> Zaurus Drivers & Qtopia Desktop: page not found

Is there an alternative site where I can download those files?

Sharp ROMs / Some Applets Disappeared From The Taskbar
« on: September 04, 2005, 05:01:15 am »
Clock applet have disappeared from the taskbar on my Z running CACKO ROM 1.22 .

The library (libclockapplet.so) exists in QPEDIR/plugins/applets and links with all necessary libraries (I checked that with ldd). But the clockapplet is not displayed and when I click on the applet that shows the list of available applets (a small dot between battery and card applet), clockapplet is missing.

Is there a config file that lists the applets that are loaded when Qtopia starts? How loading/unloading applets is controled? Anybody knows what can be wrong with that clockapplet?

Thanks.

Cxx0 General discussions / Gfx Performance Of C700
« on: May 10, 2005, 04:42:58 am »
I have just moved from 5500 to c700 and I am not so impressed with the graphics performance of this clamshell model.

I suppose that doubling the resolution without upgrading graphics hardware is one reason for poor performance (I guess all Zaurii are still running ATI'a I100 chip).  But people also complain that the performance of c700 is much worse than that of c760 and latter models. Does anyone know what has been changed from c700 to c760 so that the latter runs much faster? Memory? Gfx chip? Is the Gfx performance of c760 matching 5500?
