Zaurus - pdaXrom / Native Development Tools Getting Old
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:11:41 pm »
Recently, I've been trying to resurrect old porting attempts.  I bought a SL-C3100 and SL-6000L, and got hem set up with the most functional pdaXrom distros I could put together.

Now that I've started compiling a few packages, I'm noticing that a lot of recently developed code will not build due to outdated tools.  The main culprit seems to be m4, but others like autoconf are giving trouble as well.  Trying to build the latest m4 from source has all kinds of recursive dependencies, so bootstrapping is required if I want to pull this off on the Z.

I think the only alternative at this point is going to be to set up a cross compile toolchain targeted at pdaXrom but built using a recent version of Ubuntu, or some other Debian-based distro.

User Request for Applications / Arduino, Processing And Puredata
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:26:06 pm »
Is anyone interested in running the Arduino, Processing, or PureData IDE on Zaurus?  This would be for pdaXrom installations.

There are a few obstacles to overcome with my development environment on the C3100, and these programs all rely on some Java functionality, which I've never worked with on Zaurus.

If anyone can point me to the most functional Java implementation on Z, it's one less thing for me to worry about.

Also handy would be an ipk of SVN.  I'm currently trying to build one, but again, the obstacles...

If anyone want's to help, I'm going to devote most of today to getting this carried forward as much as possible, so drop me an e-mail if you want to help.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gawk Problems All Of A Sudden
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:27:37 am »
Before I dropped out of the Zaurus scene a few years ago, I was working on porting Daphne Emulator (think Dragon's Lair), Crimson Fields, and a few RPGs with little problem other than having to build ipks for dependencies first.  I have picked up some of that old work, and now I'm finding that gawk is breaking the ./configure on code that used to build just fine.

I'm having the same problem on SL-6000L pdaXrom beta 1, and SL-C3100 pdaXii13

Has anyone else run across this?  Have a solution?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Versions/platforms Matrix
« on: July 30, 2010, 01:07:08 pm »
I'm putting together a repository of pdaXrom ROMS and feeds, and not being previously familiar with newer versions (I only had a TOSA, but now I have a C3100 too), I'm a little confused by the version numbering on the newer ROMS for the C3xxx and other clamshell models.

I think it would be very useful to have a matrix of platforms/ROM versions/Service Packs listed on the repository to aid visitors in getting to the files they want, but I will need some help putting this together.

If any of you have input on this matter, please put your comments here, and I will organize the results.

Not in order, just listing as a staring point of what I am aware right now
pdaXrom prior to Beta 1?
pdaXrom 1.1.0 Beta 1 (TOSA only goes this high)
pdaXrom 1.1.0 Beta 2
pdaXrom 1.1.0 Beta 3
pdaXrom 1.1.0 Beta 4
pdaXrom 1.1.0 r197: SP 8,7,6,5 (not sure if this is pre-Beta 4)
pdaXrom 1.1.0 r198: SP8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 (not sure if this is pre-Beta 4)
pdaXii13 (not sure if this is pre-Beta 4)

pdaXrom Development / Sidplayer For Pdaxrom
« on: July 21, 2010, 12:00:29 am »
Hi everyone.  It's been quite a challenge to get back up and running, but I've got my pdaXrom-based development environment up and running on my TOSA, and I've just built my first ipk in over a year+!

I know there is a SID Player for QT, but I don't think anyone's put it out for pdaXrom before, so here it is.  I'll have my feed up and running soon, and will be posting apps there regularly.

Enjoy.

Be sure and check out the High Voltage SID Collection

6000 - Tosa / Power On Issue With Sl-6000
« on: July 11, 2010, 03:47:11 pm »
Update:  I have fixed the problem.  The short answer is that I needed to re-flash with the contents of SL6000L-US-1.12.zip.

Googling for this will return several download sources.  I thought I had done this already, but it turns out that the file I used, 20040217SL6V112.zip is not the same.  Must be for a different TOSA model.  At any rate, if you suffer from similar problems, just download the SL6000L-US-1.12.zip and put the contents on a compact flash card that has been formatted to FAT16 (NOT FAT32!!!), insert it into the slot with power turned off, hold D+P to enter the Maintenance/Diagnostic Menu, and select CF Update.

I'VE BEEN OUT OF THE SCENE FOR A WHILE, BUT i'M BACK BABY!!!

Original Message:
I'm a little concerned that the last post in this section was back in March.  Hopefully there are enough of us Tosa owners out there that someone knows the answer to this problem.

I just bought an SL-6000L and SL-C31000.  Neither one would boot when I powered them up.  The C3100 solution required re-flashing the NAND, and re-partitioning the internal HDD.  The SL-6000 seems to be a little more complicated.

I am suspecting that the battery had been totally discharged, and that this caused a problem where the Z thinks it is fully charged, and thus will not allow the battery to charge.  I was able initially to get the maintenance menu up (D+P, and D+M), but then I think the battery lost too much charge, and I was not able to get in any more.

I took a lab power supply and charged up the battery a bit externally, and I'm now able to access the Diagnostic Menus once again, however I can still not boot the thing using the power button.

Here are the symptoms:
1.  When plugged in to AC adapter directly or through the dock, amber charging light does not turn on.
2.  Pressing the Power On button causes the Mail and Charge LEDs to faintly flash momentarily, but the unit does not power on, and the screen does not react in any way.
3.  In order to enter Maintenance (D+M) or Diagnostic (D+P) modes, the battery must be removed, the backup battery switched toggled, battery re-inserted, and then reset while pressing the D+M or D+P keys.
4.  Re-flashing NAND using the Q+T+reset seems to work (except that it does not boot afterward, of course)

Hopefully someone out there knows the answer!

For Sale / Wanted / Two Sl-6000 Tosas For Sale On Ebay
« on: October 12, 2008, 12:48:06 pm »
I have this rule that if one of my gadgets goes for more than a year without use, I sell it.  I have two TOSAs, and one is not even a year old, but I'm selling them since I haven't been able to keep up with the scene of late.  Hopefully, someone with an inclination toward developing for TOSA will see this and get one or both of them.  Don't contact me here, go to eBay and check them out.  No pictures yet...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Python Vs Python-base/python-xxxx
« on: March 15, 2007, 02:19:17 pm »
I was looking at running Wah!Cade (MAME frontend) on pdaXrom, and I found that pygtk2 was required, which in turn needed a newer version of Python to compile.

So I've now got a full build of Python 2.5, and have to meet the next dependency, pygobject >=2.5.1 (or something linke that...).

I built pygobject and installed it, but the system still sees the older version, which I cannot determine an IPK for.

It seems that Python has been broken into -base -xml -net -....

So my question is this:

Does my Python 2.5 IPK contain evrything these other packages have, or are Python-Base and Python, separate packages?

My gut tells me that there will bw all kinds of hell to pay when I remove all those Python-partial packages.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Python Headers

Is there an ipk that contains the python headers?

I need it to attempt pygtk2, so that I can then attempt whacade

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Service Pack 1 For Beta1
« on: March 14, 2007, 02:07:24 pm »
Over the last year, I've done various things to my Tosa to make it work better with beta1.  The real annoyance comes at those times when I decide that I need to wipe everything out and do a clean install.  It is at these times that I think, "Man!  Wouldn;t it be nice if I had an ipk with all my additional changes already on it?"

So here is my proposal:

Give me your suggestions for what tidbits you would like to see included in the sp1.ipk and I'll do my best to incorporate them.

Here's what I've put in so far, and please note that I am Tosa-centric, so I don't know if these fixes apply to other models running beta1.

1. lightnpower.py fixed.  Original version calls setfl with values 1-6 instead of 0-5, resulting in not being able to turn off the backlight.

2. Modified Key Mappings for brackets, braces, and backticks.

3. Correct Up/Down/Left/Right pad control after screen rotation.  (in progress, since I lost the original fix)

4. Rotate CW/CCW for lefties and righties.  (in progress, see above)

5. The SD fix.

6. Missing Libstdc++.so.5

I'm also considering puting in a few apps that are useful, but seldom used due to the difficulty in getting them installed, like kismet, and x11vnc.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ipk Feed Builder Script With Index
« on: February 16, 2007, 01:34:42 pm »
Does anyone know where I  can find an ipk feed building script that generates a nice index.html file along with the Packages file?

I'm putting my feed back up this weekend, and I want to make it nice

Had a little free time, so I put this one together.  Looks playable, though you may have to overclock to get good speed out of it.

More info and source code can be found at http://snowstorm.sourceforge.net/
