Zaurus - Other distros support / Countdown Timer 2.5 Release
« on: April 05, 2018, 03:30:50 am »
Planned features:

1. Improved GUI
2. Multiple concurrent alarms
3. Multiple stage alarms, e.g. count down 2 minutes, alarm, count down 30 seconds, alarm, etc

I have some other interesting ideas but I don't know how they will develop.

At this time I will split development of Zaurus and Desktop versions; I don't know how much work will go into the Zaurus version - it's not as if I have a lot of people asking me for updates.

Zaurus - Other distros support / Dictionary Applications

EDICT2 seems to be more flexible and useful

I agree but the question is how well does EDICT2 fit into bedic format ? - Having lots of annotations for Japanese to English doesn't necessarily apply to other languages and bedic is designed as a multilingual dictionary format.

Zaurus - Other distros support / Dictionary Applications

I really must get back to working on my dictionary projects and Frasmodic.

In the mean time I updated my release of EDICT for ZBedic. I see there is an EDICT2 which is a richer version of the same dictionary. If it's useful, I will look into adding that extra information to my dictionary files.

Zaurus - Other distros support / Countdown Timer 2.5 Release
« on: April 02, 2018, 10:59:38 am »
My little Countdown Timer application is in need of serious attention - there are a number of features I want to add to it, so I thought it would be a good point to do a new release and draw a line under the current form.

That means a new build for Zaurus (Sharp ROM) and also a Linux x86 AppImage added to the Mac and Windows builds. The only visible difference is I added an "overrun" feature: sometimes you want to count down to an event but keep the timer running so you can see how much time passed since the alarm.

The Zaurus version runs everything in a single thread so if you choose a long sample as the alarm sound then the overrun time won't be very accurate - one of the reasons why the code needs a serious re-write.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Zaurus emulation for Linux users
« on: February 03, 2018, 06:39:35 pm »
@speculatrix

The version of Qt that the Zaurus ran was not "well out of date" in its day, IMHO. The SL-5000D was released towards the end of 2001 and Qt version 3 was released October 2001 so given lead times etc it's not a huge difference.

The interesting thing about Qt embedded was qcop message passing, which never made it into full fat Qt. qcop gave the capability for programs to communicate with each other at run time, somewhat like ARexx on the Amiga.

Gemini PDA - Linux / Zaurus emulation for Linux users
« on: February 02, 2018, 05:23:00 pm »
I think you missed something; Zaurus apps were built with gcc 2.95, Qt embedded 2.3.2 and Qtopia Palmtop Environment 1.5. There is no way you can simply move a Zaurus application to Qt 5.7, I should know, I've done it! I think Speculatrix is referring to an emulation environment where the original binaries are running.

Regarding Qt compatibility, there were some big changes between 2 and 3; and then 3 to 4. Version 4 to 5 was easier but the first few minor versions had more bugs than usual.

New products and alternatives / Ockel Sirius A and A Pro

Looks nice, thats a 367 DPI display. I would prefer without the RJ45, fingerprint sensor and a slghtly slimmer wedge.
I would only be interested if it ran Linux of course.

her own portable Raspberry PI, which she put inside a cosmetics case

I think her interest is in gadgets aimed more at women, hence the cosmetics case thing. Most of her stuff is wearables.

Every time she tipped the box on her desk to get the GPD and the accessories out I felt like I was watching one of those videos where the first person to buy the iPhone drops it.

Hi Varti,

Has there been any independent hands on or review of this device, even a prototype ?

By the way, I cannot read your attached image; I get an error page with the message

There is no form below.

YouTube link

Although she spends the first half talking about what it's good for before she's even used it, she actually powers it up after about 5 minutes.

10 minutes to set up Windows 10.

OESF Announcements / OESF Portal now set as the main page
« on: July 28, 2017, 08:47:22 am »
The link to forums from the Site Navigation box on the "portal" page redirects to the portal. Now it is not possible to go to the forum index without going to a post link then using the breadcrumbs menu links.

When you said you were going to change the main page; I was thinking that you were going to do this:

https://www.oesf.org -> portal
https://www.oesf.org/forums -> forums

Long time OESF Member mickeyl, Zaurus developer, OpenZaurus member, Opie maintainer and employee number 2 at OpenMoko gives a history of OpenMoko.

http://www.vanille.de/openmoko-10-years-after-mickeys-story/

IIRC, I used his source from opie-camera to learn how to access the Sharp CF camera module.

For now, the idea was that all the development related threads would be posted under their respective distros forums

I see. The problem there is that software is often compiled on multiple platforms.

I think we need a Software and Development forum, perhaps under General Discussion or Everything Else. I don't think we need separate subforums; until such time as there are a lot more regular posters.

If you would rather plan ahead then Software Forum, Software Q&A subforum, Software Development subforum should be enough.
