Zaurus - pdaXrom / Java questions
« on: July 28, 2004, 04:15:07 pm »
Someone has put together a Blackdown JVM ipk that will install and run on the pdaXrom. I installed it and it works perfectly. I can even run fullblown swing apps, which none of the other "micro" JVMs support!

You will find everything you need here:

Zaurus - pdaXrom / mplayer and pdaXrom
« on: July 28, 2004, 01:08:49 pm »
I have given up on mplayer under pdaXrom.

In fact, I donated $50 to the project in the hopes that mplayer would be fixed in time for my 20 hour (each way) flight, but now I will be going without any entertainment, even after spending almost $1000. Very disappointing.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / installing ipkgs without network

what is the format of /mnt/card? The card must be formztted with ext2, because FAT volumes do not support symlinks. I found that once I formatted /mnt/card as ext2, all installs to /mnt/card work fine.

As far as Bugzilla, I think one should look seriously at all alternatives first. The zilla is know to be overly complex. There are many choices out there. My favorite is Track+.

Why not use a forum to discuss bugs? Maybe even have the bug reports link into the forum threads?

These are all great ideas. Myself, I would just like to see a bug parade like Sun\'s Java site. Then we can vote for the things we want done first. That way, if you wish, you can still tie your donation to your bug fix/feature, but the developers have a clear idea of what people want done first regardless of their donations.

But lets not get lost in the details here.  Let the developers know their work is appreciated. Make a donation now!

Hello All,

I wish to post and remind every user of pdaXrom that the folks at have worked very hard to produce what I consider one of the most exciting things happening with the Zaurus today.

The work they have done is not trivial. The idea of running FireFox, GNUChess, Thunderbird, XPat2, and many other favorite X11 apps in my palm with a wireless connection to the Internet is, well, absolutely \"Sci-Fi\" to me! I am an old timer (43 years old), and I remember running X11 on a DEC MIPS workstation over 9600 baud! In my mind, my SL-C860 running pdaXrom is a \"technological miracle\".

I bring all of this up to politely remind everyone that the developers at pdaXrom have done all of this wonderful work on the \"honor system\". They operate on the belief that if you appreciate pdaXrom, you will show your appreciation with a donation. How many of us will waste $10  this weekend on 90 minutes of Hollywood entertainment? How many of us will buy $20 of over-priced coffee this week? How many of us know that pdaXrom makes an $800 Zaurus worth the price?

So. I post now to make a challenge to each of you. If you run pdaXrom as your Zaurus ROM every day, please make a donation! It is easy to do.

In my opinion, the folks at pdaXrom have totally earned it.

Software / Hotmail & Mail App

Does anyone know if the new \"GMail\" from google will have an IMAP or POP3 or open HTTP protocol.
This could be a hotmail killer -- 1GB of storage and Google search on your mailbox!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / refreshing the desktop?

I think you need to get the window that represents the desktop, presumably via the WM API, and send it an event to refresh.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Dillo and font ... Please help!
« on: May 31, 2004, 04:54:34 pm »
You can add the /mnt/card path to your font path.
You can do this manually with the command \'xset +fp <path>\'.
I think you could add the xset to your startx script to automate it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Matchbox WM Themes

You can download theme IPKs from the pdaXrom feed.
If you download one and open it up, you will see the structure of the package.
It is nothing more than a series of png icons stored in /usr/share.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / simulate mouse click
« on: May 24, 2004, 12:35:10 pm »
I believe that you can accomplish this through xmodmap. If you look at /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap, you will see the currect mappings. If you Google, you will see that there are key mappings that can simulate a button click.

Indeed. Alas, I was busy figuring it all out during the time that poitr posted the the link to your page!
It is much nicer to have the ipk now. Thanks. - tim

Here is how I got the stock Blackdown JRE1.3.1 to install:
Code: [Select]
Install the Blackdown J2RE 1.3.1 (from

Install the IPAQ extra stuff (from

Symlink the armv4l directories in lib and bin to armv5tel

Download and install the required libcstd++ library (link below)

Set JAVA_HOME and PATH appropriately in my bashrc.

Here is the libstdc++ link:

And now I am running my Swing Java apps on the Zaurus!!!
It is slow, but it is very stable.
