General Discussion / Psion To Make Linux Handheld ?

One of the bad things about Psion was that you just got the base unit, and their flash cards were proprietary, as were the modem.

The Series 5 used standard Compact Flash cards (but for memory only, not accessories). But it was released in 1997, so that was long before WiFi became popular.

Software / Kino2 0.4.3 Series Released

Hello,
we tried to install kino2 0.4.3.a as described on the webpage,
with all the prerequisites. We have a C1000 with Sharp-ROM!

As stated for "ROMs other than Cacko" we installed the mplayer and the sudo package. Then tried to install qtopia-commbbatteryapplet_1.0.6_arm.ipk,
but this crashes the C1000 completely    : during install the machine crashed,
reboots and crashes again and again every 10 seconds after POST.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=95926\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The same thing happened to me with my 5600 running the Watapon Rom. I ended up booting to a command prompt and moving the applet files to a different directory and then my Z booted. (But I don't even have the regular battery applet now.)

There's also a web site here: http://my.opera.com/community/party/reg.dml but it's being slashdotted, so it's slow.

Qt/Qtopia / Sharp Zaurus Sdk The Easy Way

Kopsis,

I've got a question about the bootable DSL CD. Is it possible to put the extensions on the CD itself and have it load them when it boots? I've seen some posts over at the DSL forum that hint at this being possbile, but I can't find anything telling how to do it.  (Wouldn't you need to add it to the ISO before burning?)

Great work kopsis. I was finally able to get a Z program to compile! (Kind of ironic that it was on a Windows machine.)

Just a couple of comments:

1. I'm using Windows for this. You've got links to QEMU in two different places. The first place gives links for Win/Lin/OSX versions. The second place only links to Linux version. (I was a little confused at first. Wasn't sure which site I should be getting it from. But I figured out that it was the first one.)

2. I don't remember what the other comment was. :-)

Anyway, good job. It was actually much easier to set up than I thought it would be. There's no install for QEMU--you just unzip it into a directory and it's ready to run. Then I just downloaded the Z image, changed the batch file to point to it and I was in business.

Now I have to see if I can get this thing on my jump drive....

Wow Kopsis, this sounds great. I was just about to try installing the Sharp tools for the third time. (I tried it with Red Hat 9 and with Mepis, but couldn't get either one to work. I was about to try it with Mandrake 10. I also tried the DemoLinux CD with the tools, but couldn't figure how to use it -- it keep trying to write to the CD)

I'm going to try this out as soon as I get a chance. Thanks for putting this all together.

cool, gotta try that one, you recommend any books? I am a vb programmer as well, with some fortran.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Truth be told, I learned Python just by reading the [a href=\"http://docs.python.org/tut/tut.html]Tutorial[/url] and the Library Reference but I came in with a lot of experience in other languages.

If you're an experienced programmer, you may find Dive Into Python helpful. It's probably a good place to start since you can read it online and then if it looks too advanced save your $$$ for something a little more beginner oriented. If you're looking for something a little more introductory I'm told that the O'Reilly Learning Python book is pretty good.

There's a link on slashdot today to a review of the 5500, comparing it to how it stands up to more modern PDAs. Seems like it did pretty good:

I tried to use that Live CD but I couldn't figure out how to use the tools. (Following the docs for regular (not Live CD) development didn't work because the commands keep trying to write to the CD.)

I would be interested in seeing this thing that you have.

I've tried twice to install the Z dev stuff and failed both times. I think it would be nice to have some more documentation on the subject.

Qt/Qtopia / Best Distro For Z Dev?
« on: April 02, 2005, 01:18:20 am »
Thanks everyone for the input. MEPIS looks pretty interesting. Especially after reading the article here http://plugintolinux.ca/simplymepis_review.html

I need to go into a quick rant here. This isn't against MEPIS, but Linux in general. Why is it that when they send you to a download page, you get a file listing with no indication of what file(s) to download? (Like this: http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/mepis/ )
Ok, rant over.

I did find a copy of SimplyMEPIS (The live CD).

I may try out Mandrake as well. I've got a copy of the Community edition that came with a magazine.
