So, as sven1999 mentioned, different versions did not help at all.

I flashed the files from V22toV19.zip from https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36448.msg297113#msg297113 and flashed them using SP Flash Tool (so flashed only the files present in the scatter txt).
Following that, I installed Gemian and... was able to boot UBPorts.

I don't understand what happened, but given that there was no debug output whatsoever when it was hanging, there is not much I can do to find that out. I made a full backup using TWRP before the above operation though, so if I'm in the mood for some more experiments, I could reflash that and see what happens.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

I have tried 2021-04-12 and 2021-03-27.

Edit: 2021-02-17 is not available for download anymore.

Hi,

I've been trying to run UBPorts as per Gemian Wiki instructions: https://github.com/gemian/gemian/wiki/UBPorts. Moved the rootfs image to /ubuntu.img in Gemian and dd'd the boot image over to one of the empty boot partitions.
However, when trying to boot, I'm stuck at the Planet logo. Sometimes the phone would reboot after a few seconds, but most of the time it just sits at the logo endlessly.

I also tried to run the preview version of Sailfish OS: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36401.0. Unpacked rootfs to /.stowaways/sailfishos, dd'd the boot image... and same story - stuck on Planet logo.

I've also tried a factory reset using https://support.planetcom.co.uk/download/cosmo-android-v23.zip. Then repartitioned, installed Gemian and repeated the steps above, but to no avail.

Is there something I'm missing? Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks
