Uhm.. I see

But if all connectivity I have is bluetooth, why should I even care it runs linux?

My understanding is that if you just want basic phone capabilities, OS doesn't matter; but for a smartphne, OS is important to make the handset suit your needs.

My 2cents.

Nowadays, for a mobile equipment, I find it more useful to have 3-3.5G connectivity than even wifi.

3/3.5G vs Wifi
- always available, for wifi you need to be close to a hotspot and you cannot move
- everyday new flat-rate operators are coming into the play, so it's not that expensive anymore
- 3.5G can be really fast at least fast for web/mail traffic you cannot tell the difference
- wifi: very unsecure, easily anyone can eavesdrop your network traffic, sites you visit, pop3 account info, ...

Of course I don't consider iPhone neither, for the same reasons.

no 3G? then you shouldn't consider it ...

I had a htc tytn ii (you know, a windows mobile 6 3G/wifi/bluetooth with sliding keyboard) but I sold it after 2 months:

- browsing was really painful
- even the 128MRAM, it felt slugish
- screen resolution 240x320 is definitelly not enough

so I'm lurking in ebay for the fujitsu u810/u1010.... my next victim?

Thanks for the reply; I already have taken a look at some and, as soon as I get rid of the tytn ii I'll get one.

First thing will be to understand why nobody could make linux suspend this unit!!

Thanks Chero.

I'm a linux-only user, so, can you please comment on the benefits of Vista Business and/or XPT over Vista Home?

jpmatrix:

the tytn2 is too big for just being a modem; I'll get a 3,5g usb modem for the fujitsu.

Also, the tytn2 suffers from the video driver issue (htcactionclass.org), and the low resolution screen (240x320) and the keyboard doesn't please me much. I have decided to go with the fujitsu instead.

Thanks for the response; it has given me the definitive argument to go on with the purchase.

I'll be switching my htc tytn II by a cheap phone plus the fuji. The whole operation will take several weeks of ebaying, but the decision is now already made.

It is interesting the comment you make about the japanese model and keyboard remapping; I'll take a look in detail at both keyboards and make a decision then; and now that Microsoft decided to go "open source", maybe it's not so devil anymore so my little-me will allow me to use MS OS.

Thanks again

I'm planning on getting one of these. After such a time, what are your impressions/recommendations on this unit?

I'm using an ebay fujitsu b2610, PIII-800MHz/256RAM/30HD, 10' touchscreen (configured but not using it) with kubuntu. I like it so much that I bought a second unit just for p2p... (about 250euros each)

Theu don't have cdrom, but I just installed linux over the net with netboot/pxe boot. A little trouble, but with just one day fiddling I got it working. I know I could have bought a cheap usb-cdrom, but I liked the netboot option too! The netboot was only for installing linux; now it is not needed anymore.

The machine runs very well and it's very light, but a little underperforming; since I like the format, I'm planning on getting either a fujitsu P1610 or a Panasonic R7. Does anyone have experience on those?

New products and alternatives / Htc Tytn Ii
« on: November 23, 2007, 06:24:08 am »
I'm thinking about the new HTc TyTn II; I know, it's windows mobile 6, but it has all the hardware you can need: gsm/3G, wifi, gps, bt2.0, keyboard, touchscreen, sdhc, 128MB RAM, and there's plenty of software like putty, ....

Does anyone have experience on this unit?

I know its windows, I'm windows-free anywhere, but really until the android platform tuns on this beast, this machine is really a powerhorse.
