General Discussion / New Zaurus This Summer?
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:02:15 am »
Ok, I know this comes up every so often, but it hasn't done so for a little while....

Anyone any ideas about timetable and spec for a new Z? My wife will probably be in the market for one this summer - would be a shame to buy a 3000 just before something better tuns up.

Sorry for the hijack..but this looks like it could be fun. Has anyone got it to work on an 860?

I installed libSDL1.2.6cvs-1, libsdl_1.2.5-slzaurus20030704_arm.ipk and libSDLmixer1.2.5cvs-1 and the game itself - all apparently without a problem - but nothing happens.

General Discussion / Free Webmail Accounts
« on: December 14, 2004, 07:03:04 am »
Can anyone suggest a decent free webmail account that will enable both POP3 access and browser interface on the Zaurus (in my case, 860 with Sharp rom)? I basically want somewhere that I can access my work email from, when away from home (the company's mail serve is inaccessible but I can set up forwarding).

I can't use gmail with the web browser. Yahoo works fine via the web page but I cannot download to the mail program (not sure why not, it just says login failed). What do others use?

Thanks,

James

General Discussion / "strap-surfing" With The 860
« on: November 30, 2004, 09:48:15 pm »
Some time ago, I stumbled on a web page (in japanese, I think) that had a neat keymapping (probably using keyhelper) to enable the web browser to be conveniently controlled by a thumb on the keyboard, with the machine open but screen rotated to portrait mode. (strap-surfing = hanging on to a strap in the cattle-wagon on the way to work, holding the Z in the other hand).

But I can't find this page again. Anyone else have any idea what I'm on about?

Thanks,

James

C1000/3x00 General discussions / price plummeting
« on: November 14, 2004, 04:16:06 am »
Just looked up the prices on www.kakaku.com and it seems like the SL-C3000 can now be found for well under Y70,000 - the lower line on this graph is the best price on the system, the upper line is the mid-price (of the 29 shops providing a quote). Most of the large chains seem to be still holding to the higher prices.

860 is drifting down, but only slowly to Y46,000.

Had a quick play with a 3000 today, the keyboard seems good. Might have to pop in to Akihabara some time soon!

General Discussion / movie player
« on: November 13, 2004, 08:10:18 am »
What can the stock "movie player" app run? I have an 860 with the Sharp rom, tried to download a few mpeg-4 files but they do not appear in the file manager view (within the app). In the System "Files" view, they are defined as type video/mpeg and "no application is defined for this document". What am I missing?

Thanks,

James

Software / ordering of music files
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:22:48 am »
The stock mp3 player app seems to order the tracks alphabetically, which seems pretty crap. In fact it's even worse than this, since the files in question actually have a numerical prefix (01 name1, 02 name2, 03 name3 etc after exporting from iTunes) but this is ignored in favour of the alphabetical ordering of the names themselves. Is there an easy workaround?

Thanks,

James

Software / todo list / job scheduler
« on: October 24, 2004, 01:29:41 am »
I haven't really found anything that I like. What do people use?

I used to have a psion, and liked "mentor" a lot (mentor page). This automatically scheduled tasks in a fairly sensible order, so each day it would give me a list of things to do. Each task had a rough duration associated with it so rather than just showing a never-ending list of jobs it would suggest (say) 3 things to do today, and schedule the less urgent tasks for future days. If today's tasks didn't get done, then everything would be shuffled back semi-automatically, but jobs would not be pushed beyond their deadline (without user confirmation). It also handled fixed appointments, although i don't have many of them.

Accessories / spectrum problem
« on: October 03, 2004, 02:37:53 am »
Hi,

on  plugging my symbol spectrum42 wifi card in, i get a CF icon butt not the network. cardctl tells me it is suspended and resume has no effect. It was working fine last time I tried. This is on an 860 with standard sharp rom, and an updated socketspectrum driver installed.

Here is the output from dmesg. I have no idea what it all means! Can anyone help?

Thanks,

James

Accessories / reboot for socket/symbol wifi card
« on: September 13, 2004, 05:56:27 pm »
I find that I have to reboot frequently in order to get my wifi connection to work (860 with standard ROM). I think the failure is triggered by ejecting the wifi card. Is this common, and is there any alternative to the painfully slow reboot that might fix the problem?

Thanks,

James

Software / slrn (newsreader)
« on: July 28, 2004, 08:09:36 am »
Does anyone have a clean copy of this (and, as importantly, does it work properly on an 860)? The only on-line source (slrn_0.9.7.4_arm.ipk) I can find seems corrupted or something...

I had the Kopi java thing working fine last week...then reinstalled everything to a SD card. Grrrrrrrr...

And now I try to compile and run a trivial applet (ie evm -appletviewer /mnt/card/java/HelloWorld.html where the html file just contains a link to the class file), and get an error like

FileNotFoundException:/mnt/card/java/HelloWorld/class.class

Of course the class file is actually just /mnt/card/java/HelloWorld.class, so why is it looking for this nonexistent file? Obbviously I have something wrong in a pathname somewhere, but I'm buggered if I can work it out. Any ideas?

General Discussion / downoading files through netfront
« on: July 20, 2004, 11:03:46 am »
I must be missing something really obvious here...but I can't see a way of downloading a file through netfront (v3.0 on a 860). Touch-and-hold on an image gives a "save image" option in the menu, but that line is greyed out for linked files. What am I missing?

Mac Issues / WEP, airport, zaurus
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:49:48 am »
Does anyone have any definitive answers/methods on whether it is possible to use a symbol wifi card in an SL-C860, with an airport network (firmware 5.4) with WEP? And if so, how?

I'd also be grateful for an idiot's guide to kismet...so far I've hardly managed to find an installable copy, and the one that did work gave a bus error straight away...

Thanks,

James

Cxx0 General discussions / screen rotation in apps
« on: July 10, 2004, 03:18:09 am »
Maybe better on the developer board, but...

How does one write a java app that will respond correctly to screen rotation? Obviously some of them do this fine, but many do not and the simple example code I have found on the web all seems to fall into the latter category. I'm a java newbie, trying to learn. I've found lots of useful introductory info on the web, but nothing that appears to cover this point.

Thanks,

James
