For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: Sl-c3100 Plus Wifi Card
« on: March 15, 2009, 01:50:20 am »
My Zaurus is now surplus to requirements, and I'd be happy to see it go to a good home. It's in good order, a small dent on the lid but functionally perfect. Screen protector installed. Comes with charger, also an Ambicom CF Wifi card.

I'm in japan, will take paypal and sell internationally. I hope it's worth about $200, but may consider offers.

Edit: sold

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale: Cfxga Card
« on: March 15, 2009, 01:37:24 am »
Mirror your Z to a projector or other screen with this compact flash card widget. I think I got one of the last to be made. It's as new in box with cable, remote, manual, CD (in Japanese). Lightly used. I'm in japan, will take paypal and send anywhere.

Rare, hard-to-find and valuable - make me an offer :-)

(I think it was about $150 new, maybe it's worth $70 to someone?)

edit: here's a picture of everything.

Edit again:sold

Off Topic forum / Saving Tiddlywiki With Opera?
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:45:37 pm »
I'm trying to use tiddlywiki on my zaurus 3100 (stock Sharp rom and opera 7.55). It won't save, and instead pops up a message that says it *should* be able to save if Opera is configured properly. Google tells me that saving with opera was a real problem a year or two ago, with various work-arounds discussed, but it seems like this should be fixed in recent versions of tiddlywiki. If anyone has it working, can the tell me what they did to get it to work? (Or maybe show what their opera.ini file contains, assuming this contains the magic details).

Thanks,

James

edit: oh, this went in the wrong forum by accident.

Software / Date Stamp In Vim
« on: March 01, 2008, 01:13:14 am »
I would like to have a way of inserting the date in vim, in my own preferred format. I can use
:r !date
and get the standard date format, but when I try
:r !date +"%Y %m %d" or whatever, the % get replaced by the current filename.

Ok, this may seem like more of a vim question than a zaurus question, but all the stuff I find on the web refers to strftime which my vim (from here: http://sharpromfeed.home.linuxtogo.org/feed/) does not seem to have. I also see lots on the web about "escaping" various characters to stop vim substituting them (and I've tried a lot of random things) but nothing that appears to covers this situation. I'd be grateful fo a hint.

Software / Can Neocal Be Used?
« on: September 14, 2007, 04:42:56 am »
I had neocal on my old zaurus..I think I never registered it but it worked fine. I have installed neocal recently on my new zaurus, but it seems to be time-limited and has expired. It doesn't seem to be available via handango and a bit of surfing suggests that it has basically been abandoned.

Is there a usable version around? Or alternatively, some freeware better than the crap sharp calculator?

Thanks,

James

General Discussion / Automatic Wake Up When Opened
« on: September 13, 2007, 12:20:25 am »
Is there an easy way (or even a difficult way) to achieve this on the 3100 (Sharp ROM)? Since it takes a second or two to wake up fully (ie respond to keystrokes) and I wouldn't open it if I didn't want to switch it on, it would seem logical for it to switch on automatically as on opening (at least, for this to be possible). There's an option for switching off (or not) when closed, after all...

Software / Dealing With Big Pictures - A Trivial Work-around
« on: August 18, 2007, 04:12:29 am »
I've found some discussion on the forum of the problem of loading large images in Visual Q (it doesn't open them, and instead reports dimensions of 0 pixels). My main reason for wanting to do this is simply to resize my photographs (which start out 2560x1920pixels) for emailing when I'm away from home.

Maybe the swap file that people have discussed solves the problem (I've seen it mentioned, but the threads seem a bit vague about whether it actually works), but there is another simple possibility - the inbuilt Sharp photostorage has an option to attach files to email, and when it does this, it automatically resizes them to 640x480! These smaller images then turn up in Documents/mail and can then of course be further edited by visualQ etc. Of course this isn't quite the same as being able to open the original in visual q, but for my purposes at least (and maybe someone else's, hence the post) it is good enough. For non-Japanese-readers who don't have translated menus, the mail attachment command is 3rd down on the main menu.

Software / Ulaw/mlaw/mu-law Etc Codec For Mplayer?
« on: August 11, 2007, 05:37:23 pm »
My digital camera generates .avi files, and I've been trying to play them using mplayer on my Zaurii (a 3100 with stock sharp rom, and an 860 with pdaXrom). The former case was installed via the instructions on Meanie's excellent web pages, the latter is just the "comes with" setup on the rom image.

The videos run on both machines with -nosound but crash after a few frames when the sound is on. I've tried various options but nothing seems to make a difference. It seems like the sound is encoded using mu-law (variously written mlaw, mulaw or µ-law etc which doesn't exactly help with googling...). In theory mplayer can handle this but I can't find any hints on this for the Zaurus. It seems like a rather standard codec, but maybe not for movies...any hints anyone?

Software / Qpop
« on: August 04, 2007, 03:46:26 am »
I wonder if anyone here has tried the mail program qpop: http://ultrapop.jp/?qpop ?

I couldn't find any mention of it here (or indeed anywhere else on the English-speaking web). I have just installed it on my new 3100 and it seems to work although my Japanese isn't very good so I haven't sorted out all the settings. But it looks pretty good, with things like real filters. It's still version 0.X so may be rather incomplete...

Software / Freenoteqt/qpdf Text Problem
« on: July 29, 2007, 03:42:21 am »
I've had an 860 for a few years, but upgraded to a "new" 3100 yesterday. Actually it is 2nd hand but appears to be in perfect condition, the 2nd hand Sofmap shop in Akihabara has several for ¥31-33,000 if anyone is interested (and 3200s for ¥40,000 or so etc).

So far I've had no real problem setting it up, but I've encountered a small annoyance with freenoteqt and qpdf viewer, in that when I export a pdf from the former, the text does not appear in the latter. The text really is there in the pdf, I can see it when I move the file to a PC. So it seems to be a qpdf issue. I have qpdf2_freetype-2.2.1-20040217_arm.ipk which was the latest I found...does anyone else have this problem? [I didn't have freenoteqt on my 860, but now I'm looking again through the   reams of potentially useful software.]

Thanks,

James

Accessories / Hand-powered Dynamo Charging
« on: September 05, 2006, 08:17:31 am »
I've played around with a variety of portable charging options for taking my Z on trips away from electricity. Solar power is a bit feeble and unreliable, and AA batteries are rather heavy and don't seem to really give a very long-life (I've used 4 NiMH cells).

Recently I bought a miniature hand-cranked dynamo, advertised as an emergency mobile phone charger:

http://julesandjames.blogspot.com/2006/09/...nce-engine.html

It seems to work fine, although I suspect it would take a lot of time to get a full charge. As a top-up, it looks like it will do just fine.

General Discussion / Defrag Internal Flash?
« on: January 19, 2006, 03:16:00 am »
Does anyone know what this message means?

On starting up mail, I get told the internal flash is fragmented, and an offer to defrag ("this may take some time"). It doesn't matter whether I say yes or no, mail starts up ok and the message is repeated next time. I'm also having trouble deleting multiple mail messages, supposedly due to lack of space (which I don't believe).

Is there anything I can do to stop the message? Can I actually defrag the internal flash? It's been (rarely) mentioned here before, but no useful answers supplied. This is on a standard 860.

Thanks,

James

Software / Zwiki Help?
« on: December 20, 2005, 06:41:21 am »
Hi,

I've tried to install zwiki, but not quote got it working. This is on a standard 860, Sharp ROM, I'm no linux epert.

I started with perl from http://zaurus.frontgarden.net/perl.html, which installed ok - said it had dependencies, but didn't actually say I was missing anything and appears to work (complains about the localisation). Then I installed zwiki from this link which was posted in the forum: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=54932

After /etc/init.d/zwiki start (i have to be root for this to work, or else it complains about a bind permission) the wiki seems to start working, although it's port 80 not 82 as the post above says. The problem comes when I try to edit a page - it hangs on saving. I've tried changing the file permissions  on the actual wiki files but this makes no difference. Any other ideas? I'd like to get it working as it seems like a really cool piece of software.

TIA,

James

Cxx0 General discussions / Resetting Mail App
« on: November 30, 2005, 07:35:23 am »
Mail on my 860 will not boot at all (it's the standard Sharp rom and app). It had been behaving oddly for a short while previously, but now will not start up at all (the screen briefly appears and then dies immediately). Anyone got any idea about setup files etc to delete in order to give it a fresh start? I'm not particularly bothered about losing the existing messages, I just want it to start working again...

Thanks,

James

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Blinking Battery Light And Shutdown
« on: October 11, 2005, 09:50:11 pm »
This is on a SL-C3000:

When the charger is plugged in, the battery light starts flashing and then the machine switches off. If it is switched off before charging is attempted, it seems to charge up the battery ok, and the charger works fine with an 860.

Any ideas as to the source of the problem, and/or a fix? A forum search threw up a few mentions of a blinking light but not much more info.

Thanks,

James
