C1000/3x00 General discussions / Sl-c3000 Roms
« on: February 03, 2005, 10:50:41 am »
Hi there,

I am sort of still undecided as to which model to go for (though I still lean toward the sl-c3000). What I want to do is this. Can you guys tell me if it is possible with the current sl-c3000 (either stock rom or full debian):

*Use as PIM and sync with Kontact. (what are your experiences of syncing Ko/pi and Ka/pi with your desktop linux box? Does it work flawlessly?)
*Write and compile latex documents. This one is rather important. I have found some solutions here and there, but I don't know if they work on the 3K. Would I be able to use (a menu-stripped) Kile on the full debian install?
*Wardriving/walking (Does Kismet/Wellenreiter work on the 3K? Are there GPS solutions for the 3K (via USB perhaps??)).
*Ethereal if possible...
*E-mail and WWW access (I guess this should be Okay).
*Just for fun and not really necessary: watching movies.

That's it.

Looking at the list, perhaps I should really go for the 860...(but I heard the keyboard on the 3000 is better and I do really like the included HD)? The price difference is not important (They are only around 120 euro apart). I would really like to chip in for the ROMs, I will look into that if I go for the 3000.

Regards.

At first sight the keyboard looks like the type they used on the Nokia 9500 communicator. That would be a bad choice. I tried it and it felt like a toy. No feedback at all, keys not spaced apart, although it were seperate keys (I think), it felt more like a membrane type keyboard. I am just glad more producers are adopting the swivel screen/full keyboard design. That's the way to go. Maybe it will inspire others to do the same/improve on it.

And to the moderators: I really feel this is a zaurus related post, but of course you are free to move this thread wherever you want. (somebody else just started another one on this topic...) Off topic would be something like the American elections, or tsunami-related threads, but of course that'is just MHO.

Best regds,
Jan

Please take a look at this post at engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000090030074/

Pro's:
-full keyboard
-VGA swivel screen (apart from the Z, I think this is the first example...)
-worlwide support probably
-Wifi, bluetooth AND gsm/gprs/umts
-looks pretty nice

Con's:
-No linux (Yet...?)
-No built in HD like the 3000

What are your thoughts?

I must say I applaud this effort. This hardware form factor is perfect for PDA/communicator form. Most importantly, you will be able to buy it in Europe and the US and receive support!
(Actually I was ready to order a sl-3000 some hours ago, but this made me doubt again...)

I must say, this is the device the openembedded/pdaXrom/... people should be targetting. I do believe this is a major blow to Sharp...

Edit: More negatives: no CF and not available for some months (available summer 2005 - first rumor was first half 2005, now July/August 2005)

best regards,
Jan

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I already more or less settled on the sl-c3000. Will order from Conics. I ordered my sl-c750 (the one I sold much to my regret) from them too...was a good experience.

Great that Ko/PI and Ka/PI also work on the 3000. My main issue is solved! Now I can continue to use Kontact on my debian laptop (actually a "harddisk-ified auditor security collection knoppix-derived live CD"-laptop...but debian is shorter... and sync it with the Z without problems (I hope at least...).

Who am I kidding, the first month will probably be spent installing debian or hacking pdaXrom on the 3000 - full and well knowing that spells trouble - trashing my ROM, freezing my device, forcing a reflash, breakin the CF and trying to revive a totally bricked 3000. But that can be fun too right;)

I might try qualendar too, if Ko/PI is too bloated, but I'm not sure about it's syncing abilities...

Hi all,

This is my first post in quite some months time. Let me outline my history with the Z first. About two years ago, I graduated to the Z coming from a Toshiba Pocket PC PDA during the group buy organized by Amrein. It was a whole new world. For some months I tinkered, learned, marvelled and gasped at the power of this device in my pocket ... the Zaurus I mean.  Then I had to do an IT project with many people I didn't know involved. I needed a really good PIM solution to manage this project. The Z failed miserably. At the time, there were very few PIM solutions (only the Sharp and the TKC apps and perhas an Opie program). Although it didn't feel right, I sold the Z and bought a Tungsten T3. Great PIM, boring device. I kept on following the Z scene, and saw great evolutions such as the Cacko ROM, KO/Pi and Ka/Pi pdaXrom get born . Time to get back in the game. But now there is this new device, the 3000 that has some great features, but is not yet compatible with the latest ROMS. So I wondered, what are the options I have now, and what in the near future?

Could you guys fill me in. I need a solution on the sl-c3000 that features a good PIM (not as the main feature, I want all the configurability, terminals, ... too, but a good PIM is needed too).

How is debian on the 3000 in that regard?
Are the sharp PIMs improved?
Can Ko/PI and Ka/PI be installed on the current 3000?
Any idea on when Cacko or pdaX will be available on the 3000 (don't flame please - I now this is a difficult question...)?
How are the syncing possibilities with Kontact (KDE-Pims) on Linux?

...or should I go for the sl-c860 after all?

Thanks for all your help.

General Discussion / Does the C860 have SDIO?
« on: October 22, 2004, 03:46:10 am »
Hi there, I asked C-Guys on what devices their linux drivers are tested. Here's their answer.

"Jan

I have just had a mail confirming that the SD Link 11b module and Linux drivers have been tested with the 860 and 760 but not with the 3000 at this stage.

Regards

Pete"

BTW, I must say they are a very helpful company. They responded to my mails in the hour, and they keep me informed when driver status changes etc. Apparently they now have a european office. Pete is the contact there.

Sharp was _so_ close... yet they let it slip...

Now that the announcements have sunken in I am getting more and more dissapointed.

minus:
* the device has grown
* screen isn't improved
* the finish looks toy-ish (big letdown for me)
* no USB-host
* no keyboard backlight
* no integrated comms
* hardly any speed improvements
* No java (as a java programmer, this is a bummer although it probably isn't too hard to add later.)

plus:
* 4GB HD (although some seem to disagree, I think this is an important plus)

Dissapointing. They _indeed_ better not try to release it in the rest of the world. It would be a catastrophe...

If only HP/dell/Asus would release a clamshell with twisty screen...

Come to think of it, Zuber, does al this information conform with what you had received?  Do you know some more specifics? Inclusion of usb host? Inclusion of graphics accelerator chip? Possible wireless facilities?

By the way, what is the port on the back here

http://www.itmedia.co.jp/mobile/articles/0...15/news032.html (the second picture from the end)

It is not SD (that is on the front).

Am I imagining things or does the cover seem to contain a "transmission" symbol - as in 3 curves extending from the center like this ))) only from small to big.

A wifi upgrade port?

probably just dreaming though...

Sharp really, chrome? CHROME??? That was not the higher quality finish I was looking for. I was hoping more for something like magnesium, carbon, aluminium, rubberized plastic, .... You can hardly use this one in business meetings now can you...

Plusses:
*Keys look nice
*USB (I assume host) is good,
*included HD is good in a sense that it gives you a lot of room
*Upgraded (but barely) processor. OTOH, it is the processor that gives USB host, so it IS a quite significant upgrade in that regard.

Bad:
*chrome...
*No built in communication technologies
*included HD is bad because it sucks juice...
*Screen is no bigger although they certainly could have made it bigger (but the hd is already sucking too much battery I guess...
*Processor not upgraded enough

Will probably get a 860 when they drop in price...  Or this one if the price is reasonable in Europe and the HD can be swapped easily when busted or bigger better models appear. Hmmm. Might even sell my ipod...

Damn, I was hoping to be overwhelmed, but now I am just confused... c860 or c3000?

Well, If the USB is USB host, and the inclusion of a HD is correct, I would not be dissapointed.  Integrated wifi was on my wishlist, but at least you don't need the CF for storage anymore...

So, I reckon there were no more revelations at ceatec? ashikase, didn't see or hear anything?

I guess the next occasion will be the WPC expo? Zuber, I know you can't give any more details, but do you perhaps know when an announcement will be made?

Jan

I am pretty shure many would find it a shame to lose te CF. Personally I feel this would be a very good trade off, because I don't have any CF accesoires any more. The screen appears to be the same size as before indeed.

This was taken at CEATEC, so there must be someone there with more info...

OMG, now THAT look like a zaurus follow-up   And it is a CEATEC related link. So maybe there is a sharp zaurus rep at CEATEC?
