General Discussion / Trivia Hunt : Why Is It Called A Zaurus

I don't know who acquired this incriminating shot of Mr Veloco R Aptor here, but I'm sure it's out of context....

we really have to suggest that he's lookiing over the girls shoulder because I'm sure that's what he would claim and it could be the source of a little 'heat' otherwise.....

I favour changing this pic on the FAQs to something a little less ambiguous.

Don't know about this. I think it is hilarious...

+ Actually I think the 'saur' part of Dinosaur in latin means Lizard. Any latin buffs who can confirm?

Yep, it means horrible lizard.

It does indeed look great. There are some things holding me back though:

-my newly bought c3000 should arrive tomorrow...
-it are apparently still computer drawings. Need to see a real device first (or prototype).
-no swivel screen.
-not totally convinced of the integrated GSM thingy. I like my cellphones small, and when I do want to get on the Internet with my PDA I want to use wifi or connect to the cell using bluetooth.

But still a very nice concept. (the keyboard looks especially nice)

I don't think a Japanese adapter will work in the US. That's why many online retailers such as conics ship with American or worldwide adapters.

Still looking very nice I think.

I still think this is going to be the first real competitor for the sl-c series. Hardware wise it might even surpass it.

ashikase has found something that may hint at a SL-3100:

Wow, just when I ordered the sl-c3000. Probably the check for the sl-c3100 is included for future compatibility though, it says nothing about timing.

If I am correct, new models are most often announced around october/november, unless it is just a minor update. I think you will be safe for a while...

I will try to use the device as a server as soon as I receive it next week (and after I configured it to my liking). I can imagine indeed that people are very impressed by the power of this device. I hope to be able to use it as a movieplayer too though.  Can't you use the included player for that or is it severely limited in what it can do and what formats it plays. I used to use the built in player when I still had my 750 before I changed to cacko (I think it was cacko, can't remember for sure...) and it worked if you converted your movies the right way. There was a large tutorial on how to do it somewhere on these boards back then, but it was based on Windows software. I will try to find it if you are interested.

regards

Wow, very interesting. If those are working, I can imagine Drupal (what I am currently using for my website) will also work. Have you tried serving pages over the network? If so, what's the speed like (is it workable as a server)?

Best regards,
Jan

hi guys
since all of you seem so learnt, help me with my queries'
i ma very new to pDA world.i am not some linux professional like many of the guys who buy zaurus.
The reasons i wanna buy PDA are'
1. to manage my schedules and make instant notes.
2. access all pdf word and other windows files on PDA.
3. see movies (avi ripped files) and listen songs
4. www
i am very impressed with zaurus since it comes with 4GB hardisk and willlike to buy it very soon.
the problem is that  after going through forums it seems i have to be linux expert to get its fullest use.it may not play movies and net can also be difficult.
pls suggest still i should go for c3000(which i am dying to buy) or is there some better option for my needs.

Hi there Harry,

To be honest, you can do all the things you want to do with much cheaper devices that are probably more apt at it, such as the mentioned dell model. They have a VGA screen too, and perhaps more importantly, built in wifi, which the zaurus models (except the 6000) don't have. There are also models with a CF slot in which you can insert a 4GB CF microdrive of flash memory card.

If however you are eager to learn new things and like to step out of predifined boundaries, the Z is an excellent device. It also has a very nice screen, a very good keyboard (nice for Instant Messaging, browsing, text files etc. and indeed a built in HD. On top it has a very open architecture so it CAN (not HAS TO) be used for experimentation. It may also be a good device to actually learn linux on (although I can't vouch for this as I already knew it before buying the Z). Biggest minusses are the price and the lack of internal wi-fi according to me.

  Hi,
Latex on a PDA is really high geek. I am using this package:
[a href=\"http://users.ox.ac.uk/~univ0103/z-tex/]http://users.ox.ac.uk/~univ0103/z-tex/[/url]
I hat to get some fonts from my debian linux and put them somewhere, where the z-tex can find them.
Let me know if you have problems with the package. There is a german howto on this issue I could translate for you...
Cheers,
Sam
PS: There is also a dviviewer for the zaurus:

Hi Teletubby,

I will check out that package. Hope it runs on the sl-c3000 already. Geeky it certainly is, but also very convenient I think. Most of my docs are written in latex, and being able to do this on the bus or in bed is a definite plus.

I will certainly give my impressions. I have to date used a Toshiba 310, sl-c750, Palm Tungsten T3 and next week the sl-c3000, so I can compare. You will be able to find the review at www.ubiquitouscomputing.org (site is out of date, but I am in the progress of updating it to drupal CMS).

best regards

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know I have just bought a new zaurus sl-c3000. I should be receiving it somewhere next week. Expect a lot of questions from me    and hopefully some answers as well...

I plan on using it as a:

*latex writer.
*late-night in bed browsing machine.
*research device (I work at the university of Antwerp in the field of ubiquitous computing / security).
*PIM
*general tinker device. Too bad this often conflicts with using it as a PIM as I experienced with my sl-c750...

Best regards,
Jan

Why is my post about the MDA4 merged with something about an alternative sl-c6000? A little mistake?

Thanks for your remarks archimark. Just a question. If you don't sync, aren't you afraid to loose all your data? Another question, because you can compare. The sl-750 I could still put in my pants pocket quite comfortably. Has the sl-c3000 grown much, or is it hardly noticeable in use?

Another question, where have yu bought. I thought I would order from Conics, because that's where I got my sl-c750 from, but they don't seem to reply to my mails (sent 3 since monday). That doesn't inspire confidence. And pricejapan is cheaper too apparently...

Thanks. Bye

Cool. But if it's like other T-Mobile MDA phones, it won't be coming out in the US anytime soon. I swear, the United States is so frickin' behind on mobile phone technology....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=65372\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I think the actual hardware is produced by a company called HTC. They sell it to a lot of operators/providers. I imagine it won't be any different with this device. Perhaps you can get it through one of the other resellers in the USA?
