I dont have one yet, but as soon as I find the cash I am going to get me a HAiCOM HI-303MMF.. it can interface with the Zaurus via CF, Serial and on your device maby even with USB..
Should be able to pick it up for arround $100

I also believe it has a built in battery, so it wont drain your Z battery as quickly as other CF devices

Code: [Select]
but chrget is correct about the sharp rom using wlanng instead of hostap

iptables, a dhcp client and a ssh tunnel and it would make a nice and secure serial to ip bridge allowing access to serial devices remotely over the internet..

It would fairly easy for someone to take one of those devices and create a "serial network adapter" that would allow wired or wireless network access through the serial port, its not going to be nearly as fast but it will be freeing up the cf..

another idea, might be kinda cool would to make your zaurus sync cradle a standalone network appliance, this could allow you to sync your data across multiple machines, say when I plug my zaurus in the cradle it syncs with my home pc, my remote workstation at work and my laptop on wifi, or if it could run a webserver you could manage your zaurus with a web interface which could allow syncing a pda across multiple platforms plug and play or more user friendly.

I could think of several dozen good uses not related to a zaurus tho, accessing any type of serial device over a wired or wireless network could come in handy for lots of things. Could have some intresting covert uses such as backdoors into systems, industrial espinage, etc..

That card is supposed to have the Intersil Prism 2.5 chipset, it should work unless it dosent support going into monitor mode, but then I would think there would of been more people reporting this problem (google search found almost nothing).

What are the errors kismet is giving you? Wellenreiter can be a bitch to get working on sharprom, but kismet should run with no problems.

You might try another ROM to make sure your card isint bunk, I got kismet and Wellenreiter to work out of the box in OZ.. might be worth a shot

oops, I misread your post.. I thought you said you had problems with the Sharp/Watapon rom too..
the kernel config is diffrent but the kernel version is the same, the modules might load or they might give you a bunch of unresolved symbols.. it may be worth a shot to give it a try.

the 5600 has the xscale cpu instead of an arm, also most 5600's have a bug in floating point processing (250, 255 is ok), there is a fix for the bug but it slows things down.. However i have a kernel without the fix and it is very stable.
I have a feeling the OZ development team dosent give there 5600 version much attention... I feel the same as adf, OZ just dosent seem to fit well on the 5600.. It makes sence because OZ on my 5000d ran waaay better than OZ on my 5600.. my opinion on OZ may be completly diffrent if I had a 5500,

I used it on my 5000d in early development when it was still gcc2.95 baced, it was almost as stable as the sharp rom and I loved it, however when I got my 5600 I tried using it for about a week.. My zaurus locked up on several instances and quite often I had software that would suddenly die, configuration is not an issue for me since I do it all from the command line anywase.. what finally made me switch back to a sharp rom was the fact that stablity became even worse when I had to use the backwards compatable libs on a couple of my most used apps.

For me its just my tastes, I swiched to linux about 5 years ago mainly for the stability and reliability, I never run bleeding edge software and try to always stick to mature and stable branches (I do have a box I use for development so in that case stability is less a priority) therefore I am not very tollerant of having my linux PDA run as unstable as windows.. or worse.

« on: March 30, 2005, 05:06:34 am » will it ever come back?

Somehow this has been indexed by google images and it's really hammering the bandwidth/processor. So I'm disabling it for a week or two.

its been quite a bit longer than a few weeks, mebe a few months..

I would recomend going back to a sharp baced rom.
If you take the unstable nature of OZ with the fact that you arent proficent in linux I dont think you will get any benifit from running OZ..

General Discussion / Using A Zaurus For Lecture Notes
« on: March 30, 2005, 04:40:38 am »
I take notes on the built in keyboard, have been for many years now.. I generally leave my backpack in my car and take only my Zaurus to class.. I record one lecture a day because I find I just dont take many notes for that class.. the rest I hack away and take a ton of notes on... using basic text editor I write several pages a day, they are timestamped and I can copy/paste and re-organize em on the fly or later.. I perfer this to drawing arrows to connect unorganized notes.. Ive been wanting a pocketop keyboard for a while now, but I can work w/the built in keybd faster than I can write with a pen due to the fact that ive got very bad carpel tunnel, go figure.. typing=good, writing=bad

I cant type notes and record a lecture at the same time, the mic picks up the keypresses.. the 5600 has a built in mic but that is the only port that is blocked by my case (because its on the back) so I took a cheap computer lapel mic and cut out all the cable and spliced it almost directly onto the plug.. then with some electral tape I ended up with this: Sure it looks ugly but I think the quality is much better than the built in mic anywase.

As for drawings, if they are left on the board after class I go up with the camera and take a series of closeups and then I can paste them all together in a collage later if I need them. or if I cant get a decent picture (admit it the sharp cam is crap) then I use a simple drawing program (forget which one I have installed) and try to re-create it.

Another nice thing is accualy using the PIM tools to keep organized, I dump all the due dates and test days on the calender so they dont sneak up on me so easy..

Having the wikipedia dictionary with zbedic always comes in handy, also I find it handy to scan the class sylibus into an image file or just email the professor and ask for a pdf version of it.

I tried OZ for a very long time but it is just far to unstable to be reliable for my daily (ab)use..

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Performance Ehancements?
« on: March 29, 2005, 08:58:39 pm »
the real question is overclocking worth the extra drain on the battery, excess heat and quite possibly lowering the life expentancy of your zaurus? who can say..

I overclocked mine to 471Mhz and the diffrence was so very minimal I decided to leave it at 400Mhz...

the biggest hope for speed increase on the Zaurus has yet to apear on any version, that would be usb 2.0 and take adavantage of the much faster sd cards.

on Watapon you just click on the memory applet in the extended taskbar and you can setup your swap there, but this has got to be diffrent for pdaXrom

I saw this today on elsi, sounds like it could help some people.. check it out

Sharp ROMs / Watapon ROM
« on: March 29, 2005, 02:11:59 am »
nice, I updated the project on elsi..

if you have room may I suggest adding qpesearch and the brigtness applet to the next rom image (both are in my feed)

and some ideas for when you fork off 1.7..
hostap instead of wlan-ng?, without hostap I cant connect to the WPA encrypted wlan @ work.
5600 special kernel v1.3 from zug, (wireless extentions and overclocking)
Im not after your job... Not yet anywase :-P  But if you do have anything on your to-do list relating to software dev let me know.. Soon I plan on getting a dev environment working so I can compile some tools for Watapon (like zethereal, python-libgmail & gmailfs). Feel free to link my feed or steal some of my repacks.

Python / Python For Arm Feed
« on: March 28, 2005, 11:27:01 pm »
I've rebuilt my Python distribution with Version 2.4.0 both for SharpROM and for modern distributions. I can't test it for the SharpROM though since I no longer have any devices running a SharpROM (clone). The feed URI for SharpROM is

I'd appreciate some feedback.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=71607\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

while trying to get comprec 0.02 ( working I got your python for the SharpROM, all went fine but when I try to run the program I get this error:
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ symbol __register_frame_info, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file with link time refrence

any idea why?

and another question, can you make a package for python-libgmail? It would be cool to use gmailfs on the Zaurus
