Hardware Mods / C1000,c3xxx Stereo In, Internal Mic, Wifi, Bt

- Speaking of of brave, the last time I tried messing with the insides of a low-power device, I fragged it.  Had grounding wires on me, the iron, etc but zatched it none the less.  Since then I've been really gun shy about doing things like, oh, dismantling and soldering away at my irreplaceable Hiroshi.  (owlish stare)
- I would, however, very much like to put at least wifi inside.  Are there any pointers on how one who's familiar with audio-grade soldering would go about messing with the the Z's innards and have some reasonable assurance that the first touch of the iron won't end in tears?
- BTW I'm typing this on Hiro and these letters are tiny...

Software / Palm Emulator

I have used POSE to emulate a Palm IIIc (YES, color) on various LINUX flavors
- So how hard is it to get the ROM image from a Palm III?  This particular one is a Handspring Era.
I'm also curious about other folks reasons for wanting POSE available on the Zs.  Is it just to be able
to run currently-available and free PalmOS applications?
The wife has a number of ebooks that are only usable on a Palm device.  I'd like to be able to read them.  Actually they do have a reader for winbloze that works fine but I'm not about to tote the laptop around for a little light reading.  To date I simply haven't read any of those books, which seems like a waste.  She's done reading them and I can't.

take a google for qpose.
- Problem I've had is this requires a ROM image, which doesn't appear to be legally available on the 'net, and snagging the image from a disused unit requires a developer license or some such.  Is there any way to work around these limitations?  I have an old Palm III I can get the ROM from, if I only could...

I just uploaded version 2.2.9 of KDE/Pim PI.
- Thanks zautrix!  I'm still on 2.2.5, I think, so it's about time for an update...

It works for me.
- Funny.  Now it works!  Maybe you just had to "loosen it up" HoloVector.  Thanks!  (grin)...

I've been inspired to purchase a 1000 off eBay just 5 minutes ago
- Sweet!!
- I've almost got to looking for a C1k on eBay just to have a spare.  Dunno when I'll be able to afford anything more, and don't want them to be "out of stock" if Hiroshi ever gives up the ghost.  Alas.
I'm a long time 6000 user...
- I sooo lusted after a 6k when they were out, but by the time I could afford one the C series was available.  Couldn't resist that keyboard.
The Zaurus is just so irresistible!
- I don't think you're nuts.  You are appropriately unwilling to compromise (wink)...

- But will all this nifty stuff really run on a C1000 with a gig SD?

I have an SL-c1000 running Debian off of an SD card.  It is very fast, reliable and powerful.
- Wowzers!
- I'd love to get some pointers on getting that setup to work.  I'd install it this weekend and give it a go.  I only have a 1GB SD at present, however, but I presume that'll suffice.  Mayhap some good ol' fashion OESF searchin' in is order...

The Eagle has landed!!!!!!
- Looks like you settled on Debian, at least initially.  (grin)
- I'd like to have a 3200 and pop Debian/Android/whatever on there, but I have a 1000 and think SD is access is just too darned slow to run anything off it.  (shrug)  I got Hiroshi the very month the C1000 was released in Japan and have gotten (and continue to get) lots of good use.  Welcome back to the fold, as it were...

General Discussion / Lotus Notes And Zaurus

Otherwise I found a JAVA library to access Lotus Notes database and I believe it should be easy to hack something together which reads out contacts, datebooks and todolists to generate the appropriate XML files for the Z.
- I've thought of doing this many times, particularly since I use KDEPIM and it stores in a standard format.  It should be easy enough to whip up some Java to 'swap-spit', especially since I do system-to-system integration with Domino for living.  (grin)
- Domino, btw, doesn't need a "library" for Java access to its data ... it supports Java natively and ships with a JVM for JSP, servlet, and other such support.  Each iteration of Domino adds more Java awareness; though we don't yet have R8 where I work it looks like quite the deal from a Java standpoint.  Even R6 allows Java development right in Domino Designer, and external JARs are usable back to R4.
- Alas, though I've owned a Z for six years, coding some Java to sync data has never attained sufficient priority for me to bump some other activity in its favor.  In fact, sync never has and doesn't stand a huge chance of ever being important to me.  (shrug)  But I agree it should be not only doable with Java, but not overly complex to boot.

Although its a bit big, is probably not too big for me
- Same here.  I've already checked the dimensions against my butt bag and it'll slide in like a well-fit glove, where Hiroshi almost rattles around in there.  Weight is a non-issue afaic; I'll gladly take a measly 170g 'extra' for these capabilities.
As long as the wifi and bluetooth worked, and I could install linux and get instant-on, I'd be very happy
- I'm right der witcha, speculatrix.  Like "Happy as if I knew what I was doin'" happy.  (happy smile)
What particularly appeals is the keyboard looks quite useable, and the screen is quite high rez for the size.
- Oh yeah.  I'm still all shivvery.  Been looking for a nice keyboard for some time now, and a better screen, and faster hardware with more memory.  This has it all.
- Price is real buzz kill, though.  Be some time before I can toss even what a C3200 costs on a new uber-tiny computer, assuming WiFi/BT aren't locked.  Phone integration would be spiffy but is definitely not a requirement for this geek.  I want a better computer in my pocket that's easier to type on.  (grin)  I'm never where I can do data with the cell phone, anyway, here in the hinterlands of New England.
- Hiroshi definitely has nothing to worry about just yet, alas...

- This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for!!  Soon as ANY Linux distro is ported to this thing I'll be hocking whatever I have to to get one.  I wouldn't even boot it with winbloze on it ... waste of a stunningly awesome piece of hardware.
- Ooooo.  I'm all shivvery!
- SIM lock sounds like a buzz kill.
- Ooooo.  I'm still all shivvery!!

Yes, that's the old discussion...
I definitely fall into the category prefering mature software over new software.
- This is why I still run Cacko despite zero development in years.  I keep trying the new software and keep finding it's too unstable for my personal taste.  I do keep trying, though.  (grin)
OTOH, a smartphone without a QWERTY keyboard is not really useful for me.
- I wouldn't give a dollar for a smart phone without a dedicated thumbboard at the very least, regardless of any other consideration.  It could be a 2GHz device with a gig of RAM, Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G, and have a lifetime free service plan.  If I can't type on it, it will never replace the Zaurus.  If I have to carry Hiro around all I need is what I have now ... a simple "dumb" phone.
- But this is obviously only me, given what's out there now.  I just don't understand how people can use them!  (chuckle)  That's my half nyble...
