Security and Networking / Bogus Network Connection?
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:11:24 pm »
- I'm having this same problem with a shiny new C1000 running the default Sharp ROM (1.1jp, i think, converted to engrish of course) with a DLink DCF-660W.  It connectes, it works for about one web page load, maybe two, then it just stops.  When that happens, it won't ping anything, not even the WAP.  A netstat -a freezes after the third entry, and has to be CTRL-C to stop it or it'll sit there forever.  Haven't done routing tables or anything yet.
- If I keep playing, the Z will ultimate "fade to white".  Then *entire* screen slowly washes out until everything is full white.  If the unit is suspended and the card pulled before it gets to full white, it will recover when turned back on, otherwise the reset button must be employed.
- I also have a somewhat flakey LinkSys WCF12 that behaves in precisely the same manner.
- Serious weirdness.  I'll try the things Jacknife suggests and see what that does...

Software / Kde-pim/pi 2.1.0 Available!
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:00:22 pm »
- Firstly, the entire K*/PI 2.1.1 package is STUNNING.  I've used Zs for years and this is the very first thing I've seen that makes a Z an usable PIM.  STELLAR WORK.
- I'm not using the mail app yet, nor the phone i'face, so I can't address those.  (wink)

PWM/PI:
- This requires an *unique* entry in the Description field, which I find just slightly bizzarre.  I'm trying to import my zSafe data, because that doesn't run in landscape (pout), and it keeps failing because I have lots of entries with the same "Description".  For instance, at work, I have account data for a dozen users on one server (my account and scads of test accounts with varying permissions).  The description has the server name, then username & password fields have the user/pwd.  I get the first entry for that server, and nothing else.  It makes no sense (to me at any rate [wink]) to put unique descriptors, or duplicate the user's name in the description.  I'd like a checkbox to disable this.  I could use server<n> or some such for each description but that, too, seems hokey.
- When I shut the Z off, and turn it back on, the passwords are still unlocked.  Don't know if this is good or bad, but zSafe requires re-auth on wake-up.  I haven't checked if the password timeout functions when suspended ... that would be okay if it does.
- Some of my "password" data aren't really passwords at all, like the number of miles I have with various airlines.  I don't really want or care for that to be hidden, once the file is decrypted; I just like my data in a common place.  (grin)  I'd find it convenient if the Category edit field, where I can change the labels, would also have a checkbox so the "password" field remains visible at all times.

KO/PI:
- When I eneter an event with an alarm, and click the little notes, the browser doesn't show anything.  Even if I drive to the directory where the Z keeps its .WAV files, there's just a blank screen there.  I can manually enter the full path to a .WAV and it will use it for that event, but I can't pick one.  This actually seems to be the case pretty much any time the file chooser is opened.  <curiosity>Is there a reason why the system default chooser isn't employed?</curiosity>
- The ToDo list is nice, but it doesn't update the percent complete for me, like StageOne does, as I complete subordinate entries.  Instead I have to manually select from fixed "percentages".
- I'd like to be able to re-organize the order of the ToDos manually, instead of having them appear in alphabetecal order.  I can work around that by putting numbers on the parent.
- When I create a sub-task, it doesn't show that new sub-task.  It does put a plus next to the parent of the new sub-task, which I can use to expand, but it doesn't expand right away.  This is minor, but first time I did it, I thought it didn't create the sub-task at all!  (wide grin)
- I'd like the ability to change what's shown in the upper-right, next to the calendar, so it doesn't always show ToDos, just like I can change what appears in the wide, lower part.
- When I hold on an event in the weekly, daily, monthly (any view with the hours on the left and the colored columns in the main area) until the context menu appears, I can't select anything in that content menu.  I can use Actions from the main menu just fine.
- Thanks for your time...

System is a C1000 running Sharp ROM 1.1JP (?) and KO/KA/PWM/PI v2.1.1.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Jmap On 3000

- What, pray tell, did you install as "Java"?  Does Sun have a distro for the Cx000??  (wink)

- I did what's most likely a real bone-head move, and installed jeode from the SL5500.  It worked just fine, actually, but then it occurred to me that the C1000 should already have a JVM, and if so, it's probably new than jeode.
- Now that I've uninstalled jeode, I can't find a JVM anywhere.  Does the C1000 have a JVM?  If so, where might it live?  (grin)
- I'm thinking if it does have a JVM, mucking around with jeode wiped its symlink, so it's orphaned in flash somewhere.  Or it just doesn't have one!  (snicker)
- Thanks for your time...

C1000/3x00 General discussions / C3000/1000 Physical Quality

- True.

- Just got my C1000 yesterday, and it seems to be pretty well built.  I really like the keyboard on this guy ... I went from a Psion 5mx to the 5500, and I've always missed the keyboard on the Psion.  This one's not as good as that, but it's very sweet next to the thumb board on the 5500.  The keys are nice to use, with a good feel, as others have mentioned, not much travel, but enough to let you know they've been pressed, with a very faint click.  Nothing on the unit has that "wobbly" feel that the 5500 keyboard has when it's slid open.
- The unit has a nice feel in my hand, though it's a touch unstable for touch-screening when it's opened in clamshell.  Never falls back, but it wobbles a bit.  Dispite the fact that it swivels and such, the display seems pretty solid, and it opens and closes with some resistance (so it'll stay where you put it) but smoothly and easily.  It doesn't *latch*, as least mine doesn't, but it does close with a nice thunk and stay there.
- The case feels sturdy, no give anywhere during casual use, even on the large flat area where the display is.  Connectors are placed well enough, and easy to plug things into/remove, with no feeling that the sockets aren't solidly in place, like some of those old pre-PS2 keyboard connectors use to feel.  Insert, snug, done.
- My SD card slot tends to "feel" like it's stuck when I pop a card.  It's not really, it just takes more force to remove it than I've ever experienced with any other device.  The SD goes in with the slightest hitch as well, but that's almost unnoticable.  Now that I know about it's little peculiarities, it doesn't bother me, but it sure did the first time it happened.  Once popped it can't be re-inserted, and had a moment of panic thinking I'd *have* to dismantle my Z less than an hour after charging it!
- Some of the keys are in just plain wierdo locations, but I'm getting used to that.  There are two keys that don't appear to do anything ... they're between Ctrl and - (dash), with Japanese all over them.  A key remapping routine to let me do something with these would be a bonus, as well as to remove some duplicates, such as the pipe character being Shift-Space *and* Fn-L, and some Fn- keys mapping to little boxes (japanese chars)?
- I have about five apps that aren't converted from Japanese.  Most don't give me the impression they are particularly useful.  One, called "database", has me intrigued.  Also, not a single character of help was translated, so I copied all the files off my 5500 and stuck them in the directories.  (grin)
- Overall the first 24 hrs with my new Z has been very, very nice.  I'm likin' it!!  Very obvious improvement over the 5500, even with a big SD card and generous swap.  Much better display, better keyboard, an actual speaker, USB Host, nearly three times the storage and twice the execution memory.  What's not to like??
- Now I just have wait 'til some ROMs come out and things will be perfect (snicker)...

- Thanks!  (grin)
- I finally found instructions for installing a Cx000, don't recall which one, and it said just what I thought, except it said just plug it in (as you did) and select the drivers from the driectotory I thought.  Half dozen more dialogs from Lord Gates and it's done.
- I had all that other stuff installed already, though I never do use it.  I telnet, and map the Z as a drive, and leave it at that.  Probably never will see if I'sync works (wink)...

You *go* Trisoft.  Thanks!

- I'm so new the Z hasn't charged yet.  (grin)  I'm thinking I can just "Add New Hardware" and point to the "USBDrivers\Network" directory on the Japanese installation CD, and I'll be all set.  This laptop already has the SL-5500 stuff on it, including Intellisync, so from what I've read so far, the drivers should do it.
- Thanks for your time...

C1000/3x00 General discussions / C3000 Or C1000
« on: April 30, 2005, 02:52:22 pm »
- I've had a 5500 for years now, and have enjoyed it immeasurably.  If my Winbloze laptop were only as pleasurable to use!  Now it's time for an upgrade.
- I pondered this very question: get a 3000 or a 1000?  The clencher for me was actually the hard drive ... I read *numerous* posts on the web how iPods fail after dropping them, just once, because the hard drive goes south.  That's an aspect I never considered, but it makes sense that a spinning disc, even an itty bitty one, doesn't deal with with large G forces.
- I've only dropped my Z twice in the last three or more years, but it only takes *one* drop to utterly destroy the hard drive.  Solid-state memory doesn't have this drawback.  So while I've no *intention* of dropping the new Z, it stands to reason that if I keep it for years (i still have the hp-71b i got in 1984, which still works as good as new), it has a good *chance* of being dropped.  I just don't like the odds.
- Since it has both SD and CF, I use the SD slot for an essentially permanent memory upgrade on the 5500, and I see no reason not to do the same on the 1000.  SD cards are available in 2GB right now, and larger ones will be available later.  It's a lot simpler to just upgrade if I run out of space, and I'm not locked into a "mere" 4GB down the road, because it boots from that big flash area.  I merely replace the music on it periodically, which is trivially simple ... just drag and drop.  I don't need to nor do I carry any SD cards around except the one that's plugged in.
- It's nifty that they put a standard CF slot inside the 3000, so it would actually be possible to upgrade to a larger HD later, or replace one if it got dropped.  I still prefer full solid-state for portable devices.  (shrug)  I could replace it with the CF like the one guy did, which is a seriously cool idea, but cash is a factor for me, and I simply can't afford to do that.
- So a 1000 it is.  It's on order and should arrive next week (happy smile)...
