Debian / Debian On Sd Alternatives
« on: September 27, 2007, 09:25:37 pm »
I'm a C1000 owner looking for the "full disto" experience.  I dabbled with OpenBSD, and got it working for a while, but I never got the hang of it.  I went back to pdaX because it offered the closest thing to a desktop environment on a Z.  Debian seems like something to be excited about.

The standard install method seems to be from the z1000_debian.txt document.  The problem is that I don't want to commit to uboot.  Also, it seems like a much better idea to install debian to a SD card then NAND, just for the extra space.

Does anyone have a method for booting a debian filesystem on SD to share? Maybe Altboot?

I left root alone.  I don't remember reading any directions that I should change it.

Nevermind...  I must have done something wrong.  I tried installing the rom again and now I have a little space in root.  I still only have 7k,  is that enough?  After installing firefox to SD with "ipkg -d sd install firefox" I have almost none of that space left...

Is / supposed to be 0kb right off a fresh install?  After installing several packages to an SD card, ipkg starts spitting errors about not being able to create sym links because there isn't enough memory.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Dead Sl-c1000 After Installing R198
« on: May 13, 2007, 10:32:49 am »
I know this is simple but try this...  I misread the directions and it took me awhile to figure this out...

Unplug the Z

Take out the battery

Hold the OK button

Plug in the Z (battery still out)

wait 10 - 20seconds...

see if anything happens.

I saw gnome-session and gnome-core in the feed...  Any chance Gnome will actually run?

I actually got it to work fine...  I guess I should have posted that.  I'm not an OpenBSD expert yet so I was better off using linux, which of course we all knew from the beginning.  I did however,  get everything set up the way I liked it and was able to use OBSD for a week or so before I had some sort of crash.  I had to shut down without running a halt, and  I could never get my installation to boot again.  About that time the announcement was made that SD actually working, so I looked into that for awhile and ultimately decided to wait until a official release was made.  In the mean time I'm using pdaXrom

Cresho, You're an awesome dude.

I called my wife and had her check behind the desk, and there it was.  Apparently, it got stuck against the wall half way down so I couldn't see it on the floor.  I bet my IT guy will get a kick out off this story.

Now if only I could find my Mac Mini...

I lost my Z yesterday...  I misplace things regularly, so I didn't think too much of it until I noticed an extra device on my network.  I looked into it and sure enough its my Zaurus.  I must have it plugged in somewhere or the battery would be dead.  Its responding to pings... Hmm, yeah I just tested ssh, and I can log in.   I can't figure out were it is in my house, and my house is not that big.

Err...

Thanks I was taking it one step at a time.  I just wanted to see the dmesg for the first time.  I might try the CVS version later, thanks for pointing that out.

i just gave 4.1 a whirl on my C1000, and install fails.  The SD card isn't found and dmesg doesn't show
Code: [Select]
pxammc0 at pxaip0: MMC/SD/SDIO controller.  I have been running obsd on a CF card, and I was looking forward to getting rid of my usb ethernet adapter and switching to a CF wifi card...

Python / A New Gui/wm For My Z
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:55:23 am »
It turns out getting married takes more time the I thought.  I had what I thought was I good idea and opened my mouth, on the forum, before I should have.   I'll have more time to work on it latter this month, when I get back from the honeymoon.

I think I'll play with expanding the windows area to cover most (all?)of the screen width.  That means smaller Icons,  but I love pretty icons.

I'm actually planning to test this on my Mac in a nested X session.  But I'll move it over to the Z when I get enough of it done to actually use.  Unless there are specific obstacles, I hope this will run on any ROM that can run X and python.

I've shifted the idea slight away from a window manager.  Its more of a data display manager.  Most programs just wouldn't work in this format, so I'll use what I can and add everything else.  Think iLife + PIM integrated into one simple GUI.  Later I'll try to shoehorn specific programs like abiword, into the GUI.

ATT sold them in the US years ago.  I had one, it worked really well as an SMS machine.  It had no voice feature.  Email was OK, but not great.  It did contacts pretty poorly, but it had a nice Instant Messenger client.  The killer was the lack of web browser.
