Still no bluetooth and still using a crippled CPU (no power saving modes).

Whoever picks up the development of this - please, please add an autosave feature to all the modules. TIA.

Someone else might want to carry that around for me. A C3200 is already at or above the upper limits.
It's near the same size as the Psion Series 5, and I used to carry that around with me everywhere before it died and I got a Z. But that thing is sure damn ugly, and it would be acutely embarrassing holding that thing up to your face and using it as a phone

Asus Eee PC / Alternative Distros

I've spent the past week setting up Debian + KDE on my eeepc and now it's working beautifully (apart from some suspend/hibernate problems - which I believe can be sorted since they were working ok when I did a test installation previously).

The impetus to install Debian was because of the recent availability in HK of those mini/nano usb-bluetooth dongles. I had been looking in vain for those in HK for ages and when I was over in the UK at Christmas I was tempted to buy one for around £18 but  decided it was too expensive. But now within the last 2 weeks there are at least 3 different models available in HK, ranging in price from HK$45 to $130, so I bought one of each of the 2 cheaper ones.

So now I can take my eeepc out and get online anywhere via bluetooth dun and my phone. I never did get bluetooth working under Asus Xandros.

but if you can have a non-virtual screen (eg, an 800x600 display), not too bad.
Um, that technology is not exactly new - I had that on my Amiga some 20 years ago.

so, with a clear winner for HD
I would have liked it better if somehow both sides "lost"  that'll teach all the participants not to have these format wars where the only loser is the consumer.

I left out one thing that makes Eee PC stand out: the community is HUGE. For example, reminds me of the heyday of palm and its frantic forums.
That's one of the problems - the forums at are getting more and more messy. Too many inane - IMHO  - posts such as:

Has anyone stayed with standard easy mode?
transporting the eee pc
What did you name your Eee?
Availability of 4G colours
are you waiting for the 8GB ??

Not to mention the countless duplicate threads dealing with the same subject. When I first got my eeepc I was hitting the forums several times a day, now it's more like once every several days. A while back one of the moderators tried to reduce the number of duplicate threads and was met with hostility from some users. Meanwhile the problem is continuing to escalate which takes it into a vicious circle - the more crap there is the harder it is to find good quality info so users simply start a new thread instead.

Does anyone know where I can get a Z nowadays? pricejapan seems to have stopped "stocking" them. I don't really want to buy via European or N American importers as I'm based in HK.

I can put up with the crappy look of the keyboard, but without a "full" keyboard (ie at least as many keys as the Z) then it's not a Z replacement.

It seems you completely missed the point of EABI, it's the new _standard_ by ARM ltd that allows you to mix hard- and softfloat binaries. There's a reason why angstrom and maemo are using it and debian wants to.
At last Koen has made a useful contribution to the pdaxrom forum   I've always wondered what EABI was but it had never been important enough for me to actually go and find out. Now I know, thanks.

Unless I'm missing something in the oesf search options, it seems that oesf only returns the thread and not the specific posts that contain the search hits.
Use the advanced search options. Click on the "Search" link (top right corner), click on "more search options".

I read the forums daily but it got to the point where I felt bad asking questions because I give next to nothing to the community.
There's nothing to feel bad about. As long as the questions you're asking are not ones that have obvious answers that can be found with a quick google or a search of the archives then ask away.

I liked Heroes of Might and Magic III, but hated IV & V. They were too graphical, which I felt took a ton away from the game.
Have you guys tried WoG (Wake of Gods), it's an "add-on" for HoMM3 which greatly expands the number of creatures. items and abilities. Makes it seem like a whole new game.

Chero: it will probably not help you decide but, in my neck of the woods about 90% of the people I see playing the Nintendo are girls, and about 99% playing the PSP are boys.
