Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Headset/mic Working On Clamshells For Voip?

could you try "linphone"
[edited] The GPE GUI from linphone-hh package (OZ3.5.4.1) seems to work.

[edited] However, I still haven't manage to record anything via my headset (in headphone jack), neither with arecord nor with the "Record memo" app, independent of alsamixer settings.

When I plug standard headphones, alsa switches the speakers off and Jack to headphones; left/right will play music (via aplay). If I change "Jack" to "Headset" still both left and right will play music. I think this is not the desired behaviour as one of the channels should work as Mic. With the headset plugged, I can listen to music (mono, one earphone), but -- as I said above, I can't use the mic.

Can someone confirm headsets (mono headphone + mono mic) work under OZ on C860?

I'd love to. First I'd like to make sure, sound works at all. (The record/play applications don't work for me.) Do I need additional packages not found in a standard OZ flash image.

Cxx0 Hardware / Is Flashing Badblock Aware?
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:46:17 pm »
I want to reflash my Zaurus because of the situation described in here. I think one NAND eraseblock (on the root fs) could have gone bad.

Will reflashing (OZ3.5.4.1) scan for badblocks, remember existing badblocks?

My Zaurus startet to behave strangely (CPU load average > 2.00, fonts in GPE wrong, suspend not working). I couldn't identify to problem, so I rebooted a couple of times, which didn't solve the problem. I found two interesting bits in 'dmesg': [full dmesg output attached]

Code: [Select]
Sharp SL series flash device: 800000 at 0
Using static partision definition
Creating 1 MTD partitions on "sharpsl-flash":

NAND device: Manufacturer ID: 0xec, Chip ID: 0x79 (Samsung NAND 128MiB 3,3V 8-bit)
Scanning device for bad blocks

Bad eraseblock 3099 at 0x0306c000
Creating 3 MTD partitions on "sharpsl-nand":

[...]
0x00700000-0x03c00000 : "Root Filesystem"
0x03c00000-0x08000000 : "Home Filesystem"

i2c: ICR: 000007e0 ISR: 00000002
i2c: log: [00000446:000007e0]

I don't know whether these message are new.

I tried to find out whether the NAND chip is working by running "md5sum /dev/mtdblock*". This works on mtdblock0 and mtblock3 while I'm seeing "IO errors" for mtdblock1 and mtdblock2.

So, it seems my NAND has a few badblocks, I learned (from google) that's OK. But are these NEW badblocks which were good untill now? I know the NAND memory wears out, but does this mean I'm near the end of its lifecycle (2.5years of "normal" usage)?

I assume the builtin NAND chips don't have any "logic" (for wear leveraging, mapping out badblocks), so this has to be done on the software side (jffs2, mtd?). But how would I do this? Will the OZ installer do the job? Is there a "format" utility?

Did people here have problems with bad NAND chips before? I assume, the devices used by OZ developers get reflashed quite often?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Is it at all possible? Does soud work on current OZ for clamshells? Is there any VoIP app proven to work on OZ (preferably GPE or CLI)?

Is hard or could a small donation turn my Z into a phone?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gpe Address Book Information

Hi there

I have all my address info in a spreadsheet. I'd like to import it into the GPE Address book. I'd also like to be able to export any changes out again.

Is that possible?

Write a plugin for opensync. (I don't think a simpler solution exists.) opensync to spreadsheet/csv would be cool.

I'd like to have a reminder entry for any public holiday. Is the best way importing an iCal file or does GPE have any support for national holidays?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128744\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The new gpe-calendar 0.73 (to be released any day now) features calendar subscriptions, so you can subscribe to online calendars, such as the mozilla national holidays calendars. If you don't want to wait, try importing the .ics file, that's what I did on my nokia 770.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128747\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That's good news, thank you.

Importing ics Files doesn't quite work for me, though. It seems GPE ignores the timezone information in the ics file. If I import the soccer world cup calender (http://www.4wdmedia.de/download/fifa-wm-2006.ics), which is in CEST, Europe/Berlin (GMT+2) all games are two hours later in GPE but correct in Evolution.

JFTR, on my Zaurus TZ=MESZ-1MEZ, /etc/localtime symlinks to Europe/Berlin, but the problem doesn't seem to be here because `date` and `date -u` work.

Thanks

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gaim Icq/aim?

I see there are a ton of protocols available except for the 2 I actually use (other then jabber for google talk access).  Am I missing something or is there just not ICQ/AIM support?

Thanks in advance.

Icq and AIm are supported through the oscar (maybe TOC, too) protocol IIRC.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Simple Backup Approach Like Rsync/tar?
« on: April 20, 2006, 04:39:36 pm »
Just a simple question? Can I safely assume that all data is in $HOME and all configuration is either in $HOME or /etc and rsync those directories to CF or network for backup.

When it comes to restoring things, is it likely the file format of gpe apps will change or can I update and keep my files (as from a rsync backup)?

Accessories / Data On Sd Card Changes Randomly
« on: April 20, 2006, 04:22:17 pm »
Because my MMCplus card is not yet supported (will be in OZ 3.5.4.1 I've been told) I tried using an old 128MB SD card I used with my camera. Although problems with ext2 on SD have been reported I did mkfs.ext2 and weired things happened. (coudln't mount, partition table disappeared after removing and reinserting the card.)

Quickly decided to go back to fat (and use an ext2/cramfs/whatever image on FAT).
I used my camera to format the card, thought this to be safer then fdisk/mkdosfs. Afterwards I found a standard partition table and FAT partition,  but things were still strange:
* After umount, mount *sometimes* fails (as corrupted)
* If mount didn't fail, the md5sum of files had changed.
* After removing/reinserting the card, *sometimes* no partition table was found (by neither the kernel nor fdisk)

My camera still likes the card. No failure, can read the photos from Zaurus or my USB card reader. I'm not going to use the card anymore for anything important, but I'd like to know:
* Did I 'destroy' the card by using ext2. (In that case I'd write an angry letter the manufacturer.) What I'm thinking of here is that I could have confused some proprietary 'secure' feature expecting FAT which now makes me 'pay for pirating' or whatever.
* Is the card at the end of its lifespan? (It was hardly used)
* Can I find out? Does it make sense to run badblocks or alike on a memory card or will it just cost write cycles?

In case you carre it's a "Pentacon Practica" made in Taiwan bought two years ago (new) for cheap.

Great. Now we need to agree on which info is supposed te be on which wiki/site. There is already information about hardware on OESF wiki and about the GUIs on their respective wikis on handhelds.org. Link from OZ wiki or copy to OZ wiki? I prefer link.

General Discussion / Should I Get A Zaurus?
« on: April 12, 2006, 01:12:07 pm »
Hi Mathews,

short answer: I don't think the Zaurus is what you are looking for. I love my Z but I'm not recommending it to anyone who doesn't absolutely want a linux computer in his pocket.

longer answer: Z hardware (and software) can porbably do what you expect once set up properly. You do need another computer to make full use of your Z, preferably linux with root access, but any will do if it offers:
* card reader (or USB mass storage support and cheap USB card reader)
* is on a network the Z can connect to (ethernet or wireless or internet but avoid NAT/VPN)
* ssh in/out
* reliable storage (for flashing, flash backup)

I want a device that will allow me to check my email, listen to internet radio (BBC), and surf the internet. Will I be able to do this on a Zaurus?
You can do that, but whatever software you use it will not be the same as on a laptop/desktop. The 640x480 screen is tiny, it won't feel like an old PC with a VGA monitor. Browsers lack features or they will be slower or both.

Will I have a hard time using a Zaurus?
Yes. Maybe not depending on what type of a user you are. I'm pretty sure on this one: A Zaurus user will either use only a small fraction of what's possible with a Z or have a hard time learning to use it. The Sharp software (or Cacko -- its improved English variant) offers what you asked for and it is designed for people who are not linux users (says "Windows XP" recommended on the packaging). It should work more or less out of the box but you can't expect support, software upgrades, documentation, etc from anyone (You may ask here, of course). The alternatives are better, I think, but ATM also harder. Developers/Users are helpful but documentation is still lacking.

Will the power adapter work in the US?  One last thing, does the Zaurus ever run warm or let off any strange odors? [div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=122718\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
There are lots of power discussions on this forum. Sharp sells a wolrd voltage adapter which should work. The Z doesn't run warm or smell while using it, however while charging mine gets slightly warm (not bothersome).

One more warning: The zaurus is the perfect toy. You will play around with it. (I count this as a pro but decide yourself.)

I read your post because I'm about to about do the same thing:

I have an (old not-so-fancy) desktop at home and I have accounts for university (linux) computers. I never bought a laptop because I think it looks pretty ridicoulus when students sit uncomfortable on the floor with computers on their laps. I can live without a PDA, though I miss my broken Vr3 a lot. Choosing a portable computer is a tough question, a laptop which can fully replace a desktop or workstation (like for hours of working, running abitrary software) is hardly portable and will ruin your back. Then, even the smallest PDAs have more processing power than the casual user would ask for (assuming highly optimized software which is usually not the case), but size (not only resolution) does matter.

Unlike you I'm kind of a computer guy and I'm moving to Vienna for some research work -- without any computers except for my Z. I'll use the Z (C860 w/ OZ/GPE) for email, internet, storage of all the things that I should have memorized but haven't and maybe more (LaTeX and programming). Point is -- I'm not convince everything will work the way I expect it to...

If you do still want a Zaurus and if you can invest the price and some time, consider the Zaurus an option.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gpe-mini-browser And Https: Not Working
« on: April 11, 2006, 04:58:52 pm »
The browser doesn't do anything (not even a message on STDOUT) when I try to access htpps sites.

Can I fix this by installing a lib? Which one? ipkg info 'gpe-mini-browser' doesn't suggest any.

offlineimap from OZ 3.5.4 should work without problems
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=121853\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I didn't work for me. I'm running the OZ3.5.4 gpe-image with default feeds and tried 'ipkg install offlineimap' which didn't work for missing python-dependencies. If I find the time I'll look whether I can satisfy the dependices.
