Cacko 1.22a And Wifi Function
« on: February 17, 2005, 04:28:27 pm »
After upgrading to the latest Cacko ROM, my wifi setup no longer works with the Any function checked; it will only work if I specify SSID.  This is fine if I'm in my network, but when out or traveling, I often don't know the SSID.  Is there a fix for this?  I have tried to get Wellenreiter to work so that I can sniff out the SSID of available networks, but haven't been successful getting that to work either.  Help!!

I have the same issue with "Any" not working.  I installed Kismet from the feed and it works just dandy for finding those SSID's.  I couldn't get Wellenreiter working either, but Kismet is nice and simple.

I recently updated the kismet package in the feed too.  Many thanks to Helmut Kolb.

A question out of curiosity :

Obviously something has changed in the wireless network layers between 1.21 and 1.22, as connecting to unspecified-SSID ("Any") public/open hotspots used to work just fine. Now you need to get Kismet or Wellenreiter installed and working to achieve the same result. The answers I haven't found in the FAQ are :

* what change(s), exactly, have brought this new behaviour ?

and, more importantly,

* what has been gained in the process ? I suppose this change must have been for the better and for good reason, but it's not clear to me what it brings in exchange for the loss of a potentially useful functionality ?

Thanks for any hints,
fp

New wireless drivers, hostap to be exact.

This is just a side effect, nothing more. The lack of source code for the Qtopia network applets makes is impossible to figure out why it works that way with the new drivers...
