Trying to samba to a winme machine?

I finally have given up after days of searching, reading and modifying .conf files. It all sounded easy to share a directory from my winME machine to the SL-5600. But it doesn\'t work for me... So I\'m here for help...

I have a  D-Link 660W CF card in the 5600 connecting to a Linksys WRT54G router. I can use Opera on the net just fine, even e-mail and Jabber. I can ping the other computers that are wired to the router.

I have read all the posts here (and everywhere else I could find) concerning samba and smbmount. I have made changes to my .conf file and that didn\'t help. I\'m out of ideas. I have read that samba doesn\'t start unles you connect to the cradle & USB. So I started samba as root with the same results.

When I enter the  smbmount //192.168.x.x/mypc mypc -o username xxxx all I get is:

\"session request to *SMBSERVER failed\"
\"SMB connection failed\"

Same messages if I use the computer name instead of IP.

I have tried so many different things that I can\'t even remember them (sorry). But if it was suggested in a post, I\'ve tried it...

I did change the .conf interface to eth0, then back to usbd0, then to usbd0 eth0 so I could synch again...

Anybody have any ideas? Could I have a different network problem than samba? Just because ping works doesn\'t mean anything else does. But I\'m not sure how to test it? TCP and the basic network is obviously working because I can get on the internet with the 5600. I just can\'t seem to talk to the other computers that are wired into the router, other than ping...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a hard drive full of mp3\'s I\'d like to listen to, and not one at a time on a cf card ;-)

A couple of stupid questions:

a) Did you enable file sharing on your windows box?
 Are all your machines using the same Workgroup value?
c) If you\'re using static IP addresses, are they in the same subnet mask?

I\'ve read the first link. The problem there was ncurses.s05. I did the limk to 4.2 and smbmount runs fine. So that\'s not my problem. After that it worked for him, not for me...

Read the second link. All that did for me was make the CF card permanently attached so I couldn\'t disconnect or eject. Didn\'t do anything for the samba problem, so I got rid of the mods. If I get samba working, it would be worth looking back into though...

For the A,B,C\'s...
Sharing is enabled on all my machines. Only 5 running right now, and one an OS/2 box so we\'ll leave that out of the discussion ;-) All on the same workgroup and all talk to each other just fine for any purpose with multiple shared directories. And yes, I use static IP addressing.

Now the subnet mask may be an oddity, but should be alright for the box I\'m trying to work with.

I\'ve always used 255.255.255.0 with no problems. When I got the LinkSys WRT54G recently, I had a problem setting it up as it only allocates addresses in the 198.162.1.x range. To get the systems set up, I had to use a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 on that router. That allowed me to set up the router, a new machine (wireless) and the 5600. I changed this machine to the same subnet mask to be compatible, but the other unchanged machines work fine also at the 25.255.255.0. It\'s only the 5600 that has trouble communicating.
I just changed my 5600 synch option to usb TCPIP advanced to see if it would still synch & file transfer. That works fine too. So the 5600 will talk TCP to this box, just not with samba... I must have someting set wrong somplace?
So I\'m still in the dark...

Okay, I\'m having fun, really... A bit more hacking into things...

I don\'t know why this all seems to work for everyone when it doesn\'t even come close for me. Samba seems to run automatically for some people, not me...

So I got samba to run automatically by adding it to \"network\". Plug in the card, connect, and samba runs. Disconnect and samba unloads. Fine, but...

This just gets samba running for me. After a bit more looking around, I discovered the nmbd log (no smb log). It apparently can\'t find an interface! I have the smb.conf interface set to \"eth0\". I worried so much that the 5600 didn\'t use eth0 for the wireless card that I finally found the device listing in the directory. Sure enough, eth0...

So the networking works just fine, I can talk to the internet all I want. I can synch, now on usbd/tcpip. And I can automatically run samba when I connect to my network...

Why is nmd not finding an interface? Why does it work for everyone else but me? After all this work, it must be someting embarassingly simple, but I can\'t find it... Someone must have an idea... Please!
