Battery Swapping On C3000
« on: January 26, 2005, 10:13:26 pm »
Hi all,

I'm getting frustrated with the fact that my C3000 always resets when I swap batteries without using the AC adaptor.  I even tried, without success, to swap within one or two seconds as per this thread:

  Internal Battery thread

When I bought my C3000 I also bought 2 extra batteries and an external charger thinking that I could then use the Z for maybe 10 hours between visits to the AC adaptor.  Extremely useful for long train and airplane journeys.

Now I find I have to switch off the machine to change batteries safely, which is a real pain.

Is this just me, or is this a failing/'feature' of the C3000?

The only solution in the field seems to be to use an external 5v battery while changing the internal battery.  More things to carry...

A hibernation function would also be useful to get around this problem, but I don't think that exists for the Zaurus.

Your input and ideas much appreciated.

Jonathan.

Many thanks DreamTheater,

Yep, sure helps!

The 9v emergency thing is just what I was about to do in a spare second in the lab with a 7805 regulator.

Sure would like a hibernation facility though so I can do away with this mess entirely.  So much neater to just use the 3 batteries I have spent so much money on...

Maybe I can do something similar to your convoluted USB hub/charger setup using a small rechargable battery topped up via the USB port and then fed back into the Z when needed. Probably need a diode or too though.

something like:

  Z USB port -> rechageable 5v battery -> Z power port

Maybe it could all be hidden inside a small cable.

Cheers, you've given me food for thought.

Mine was like that for the first day or two after I got it, but now the internal battery seems
to have charged sufficiently so I can take out the battery for several seconds without rebooting.
