Billionton Cf Gps Card And Gpsd: Which /dev?
« on: March 29, 2005, 10:27:38 am »
I have a C3000, with which I bought a Billionton CF GPS card. I've installed zgcc and compiled gpsd, but I'm now stuck because I need to tell gpsd where in /dev to find the card. I've tried experimenting, but without success.

Has anyone got this combination working? Info on the /dev location for any other GPS card would be helpful, as it might be the same or at least give me a clue. Thanks!

Hi jfr,

it's "TTYS3"

Sorry that we're a bit behind with translation, so the
page for the Billionton GPS http://www.trisoft.de/en_bilgps.htm
is actually not available in english

Hi jfr,

it's "TTYS3"

Ah! Thanks, Marc

That was actually one of the ones I tried, but now that I know which device to concentrate on I'll have a more determined go at it.

Cheers

Well, I tried, but no luck so far.

Gpsd doesn't show any data coming from the card, and nor does this command:

stty < /dev/ttyS3 ispeed 4800 && cat < /dev/ttyS3

Does that command work for other people?

When I plug the card in, a blue LED glows briefly. After that, no LEDs show. The CF icon shows in the task bar, and while the command is running the "Eject card" option says it can't eject it (which is what I would expect). I tried a hard reset on the card, but it hasn't made any difference. A wifi card in the CF slot does work, and I've run out of ideas...

What does "cardctl ident" or "cardctl status" report? Maybe you have to wake up the card first ("cardctl resume 0") in order to use it... Also, in the past, I've played with GPS cards on other devices, some were very long to get a fix, maybe the card won't give any data until it has found exactly where it is located? Are you in a place with a good satellite reception (outdoor, for instance)?

Hope you'll get it working, I certainly would be interested by such a card, too...

Hello!

We just testet the SL-C3000 with the Billionton CF-GPS card and had no problems at all. After installing the zgps.ipk we put the CF-card into its slot.  It took some time (perhaps a minute) and some satellites were found. While we tried this, we stood outdoors (shivering, because of the low temperatures).

Success!

Euroclie: that was the magic formula. Thanks!

cardctl resume 0 was what it needed (and it also needs it every time the Z wakes up from a suspend).

Trisoft: Thanks for your dedication - I'm very sorry to have sent you out into the cold... but thanks too for the guidance to zgps. It looks as though that has the right controls built into it - I'll give it a go.

Glad I could help!

On a side note, I've had nightmares making my GSM/GPRS CF card work on the Zaurus (I would always get a "CF card busy" error message whenever I tried to connect using the GUI), until I realized that I had to suspend the card (or more exactly that I shouldn't try to resume it whenever I inserted it in the Zaurus) to make it work...

So resuming the CF slot before using it might not work for all cards/applications combo, it seems!

You can read out the device file through
Code: [Select]
cat /var/lib/pcmcia/stabThe entry ttyS3 means /dev/ttyS3
